In this webinar, we look at the 3 steps you can take with beneficial fungi to rebuild the health of your soils. The process starts by locating and gathering beneficial microorganisms from your local area. The second step is to multiply the beneficial microorganisms using the close-control, aerobic composting method developed by Dr. Elaine Ingham. This ensures that many pathogens are eliminated and that you get a good balance of the 4 key groups of microorganisms needed in a healthy soil. In step 3, we apply the beneficial microorganisms to the soil in either solid (compost) or liquid (teas/extracts) form - depending on the context. Once the organisms are back in the soil, it is imperative that regenerative methods are adopted, to ensure that the soil biome is protected.
Panelists:
Adam's passion for agriculture emerged in 2008, during his three months of volunteer work on organic farms in New Zealand. His time in graduate school cultivated a broad vision for the restoration of living soils, as well as utilization of research and community engagement to address current and emerging global food production challenges. After completing his doctorate at Oklahoma State University in 2016, he was funded as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Instructor. During the past 5 years, Adam authored or coauthored 20 research publications focused on agroecology and plant-microbial symbioses. He also taught multiple undergraduate and graduate courses on global food security, restoration ecology, and environmental science. He joined The Soil Food Web School in 2021, following his dream to help regenerate soils, improve human nutrition, and protect our planet.
Brian came from a background in IT and now runs a successful consultancy (Sprouting Soils) in California.
The daughter of a forest engineer and an agronomist, science and nature were part of Dr. Carla Portugal’s childhood while growing up in Brazil. Her graduate school research focused on looking for the microbe's power to minimize human impact on the planet. At the Soil Food Web School, Dr. Portugal utilizes her expertise in research and teaching while also pursuing her interest in developing a greater understanding about the interconnection among the microbes in the soils and how nutrient cycling affects the nutritional value of plants.
Dr. Ingham has advanced our knowledge about the soil food web for over 4 decades. Widely recognized as the world’s foremost soil biologist, she’s passionate about empowering ordinary people to bring the soils in their community back to life

The Soil Food Web School’s mission is to empower individuals and organizations to regenerate the soils in their communities. The Soil Food Web Approach can dramatically accelerate soil regeneration projects by focussing on the soil biome. This can boost the productivity of farms, provide super-nutritious foods, protect and purify waterways, and reduce the effects of Climate Change. No background in farming or biology is required for our Foundation Courses. Classes are online & self-paced, and students are supported by highly-trained Soil Food Web School mentors.
Over the last four decades, Dr. Elaine Ingham has advanced our knowledge of the Soil Food Web. An internationally-recognized leader in soil microbiology, Dr. Ingham has collaborated with other scientists and with farmers around the world to further our understanding of how soil organisms work together and with plants. Dr. Ingham is an author of the USDA's Soil Biology Primer and a founder of the Soil Food Web School.

Interesting side note: my property was scraped bare annually for a decade, as weed control. I’m trying a chaos garden! My tilling was a small trench about 2” deep. After a friend passed away and left us a huge collection of 30 year old seeds, I threw many different seeds in those trenches. Native grasses and flowers, all kinds of vegetables, beans, corn, daikon radish, sorghum Sudan grass, oats, clovers. I doubt everything will grow but some of it already is!

I first heard Paul Stamets talk about the fungi on the Joe Rogan podcast back in 2019 and he blew my mind. Before then I thought mushrooms were just a salad topping, some random plant-like thingie that grew on my yard after the rain or stuff weirdies messed around with back in college. To Dr. Elaine and the whole SFW team, thank you for sharing your work w/the world!!!

My question is. I have bare soil not much of grass or weeds growing, so we have to add fertilizer at low rate to get the grass to grow and graze with cows and slowly back of on fertilizer .so is this a good start?
@brianbiddle7590
@brianbiddle7590 Жыл бұрын
I am no expert so take this with grain of salt and some tequila, fertilizer may give you a faster start it will probably slow down your progress to healthy soil. If you already have the cattle i would spread their hay out. Put enough out so they eat about 80% and move them to the next area by spreading the hay out in a different area. Not only do you get the urine and poop from the cow but you get that 20% of hay to help feed the soil. Also try a tea from worm castings to help bring back the soil health. Just my two cents.

You want to add compost made from local native materials, according to the video...
@wesleycallison5593
@wesleycallison5593 Жыл бұрын
You are doing good. Bale grazing is probably a better idea. You lay good hay out directly on the areas you wish to improve and let the cattle eat it, stomp it in, defecate and urine on it then move the feeding area fairly quick.

Water your bare land frequently before and after attempting inoculation. Purchase mycorrhiza fungi and apply it to the bare ground (a little goes a long way). Then add 3-5 inches of mulch (wood chips, dry grass, dry straw). Water frequently & NEVER TILL. I feed my soil not my plants.. lol iykyk

Doesn’t the thermophilic process kill off all organisms because the heat is so hot that nothing can survive?
@soilfoodwebschool

That is a great question! This is one of the many amazing things about nature, if the heat is maintained in the proper range (around 131-151 F), it will kill the potentially harmful organisms but not the beneficials.

When Adam talks about fungi, in this vid, it seems, from the papers he touts, that he is only thinking of mycorrhizal fungi. That is a shame. I believe we will find that saprophytic fungi, on the whole, are more essential and beneficial to the plants we want/need to grow than are mycorrhizal fungi. It's too bad that SF aren't studied much and MF are the most studied microorganisms in the world. We are getting a distorted view of things, but that's where the money is. It's a lot like climate change in this sense.

So the end goal is forest? I’m not convinced this research is very broad to a variety of environments. So what about the Sonora desert or the 28th latitude north or Florida? Our geology is sand. Beach sand that is constantly anaerobic. Naturally disrupted by fire in the best ecological case and characterized by “weed” species that feed ground birds like quail. I believe your research but I find it myopic.

@xi kano Depends on the scale. If you are large scale farming or managing a pasture, it becomes complicated. For most gardeners or even market gardeners, using your own vermicompost, a Johnson-Su Bioreator or hand raising you own mycorrhiza fungi is doable. After a couple of seasons, the results should be evident. Testing to get bacteria & fungi counts can be expensive if you have no microscope background, but do you really need it for smaller scale?

False takes no phd. You add compost and organic material back into the soil. Add hardwood s the finger the better. This adds aeration. Add organic o molasses support free to feed microbes and adds magnesium and calcium. Once every two s add an inch layer of e compost followed y layer of j. Could be grass clipping. Leaf litter. Straw. Wood chips. You burn some wood? Add the wood ask e this is potash. If u use as lot of wood chips. You want to add blood meal to increase in soil as wood s will quickly use the nitrogen as they break down. Use a lot of leaf litter. You will need to add some polarized lime to raise ph. Lime also adds cabin and magnesium. Leaf litter great for adding fungi. Don’t overthink it these clowns are pretending to hold secret knowledge. Indians would throw dead fish and guts to a hole in ground then plant on top. Legumes poor brand add to the soil. So makes great plant to eat and to add organic matter to soil. After harvest use the plant as compost
