Their poppy songs are not the reason why BTS are so popular, it is because the majority of their songs express their sincere feelings about the world. They write songs about their own experiences and the struggles of today's youth. Their most healing songs are about loving and valuing yourself. This is one of the reasons why they are loved by people of all ages (the majority of fans are well over 30), all genders, all races. They are talented but also very hard working. They are very humble, kind and loving young men (who are also absolute crackheads).

I discovered BTS accidentally with their song Fake Love. It blew my mind, especially the lyrics. Then I found out they (specifically the rapper/leader RM) wrote the lyrics and was so intrigued. I have never been into contemporary pop music but BTS is definitely an exception because their music is extremely deep and intelligent. They are also so skillful in what they do- the vocalists are top-tier, the rappers are top-tier, they can all dance extremely well and perform live. They sing and dance simultaneously (not lip syncing) and their choreo is as difficult as it gets. On top of that, they’re genuinely good and non-problematic. I highly recommend on: Kinetic Manifesto Film or the 10 minute medley Festa Room Live (you don’t get the dancing with that one but you get personality!)

We pride ourselves in BTS' lyricism. You might not know what I mean yet because Butter wasn't even written by them and this was made to lift up our spirits during the pandemic. To give you a little bit of insight of what you're going to be diving into, BTS makes songs with a lot of substance unlike other kpop groups. I really want to expound some more on this but it might overwhelm you so I'll try to do this as briefly as possible xD. Their first albums were about problems you face as a teenager, in school, etc. Their next few albums were about growing up and facing reality. The next albums were about facing temptations that you encounter as an adult. The next albums were about learning how to accept and love oneself. The next album was about finding the Self. Their latest album is kind of like their "Self-Actualized" album wherein they were finally given the go signal to create and pour in everything they learned into it. Honestly such a beautiful journey and there's never a dull moment with BTS. I became an ARMY just last year and even used to be anti kpop but then I gave them a chance and discovered a whole world that has been hidden all because of the language barrier but nonetheless, I am sooo glad to be here 💜

BTS is a 7 member group with 3 rappers and 4 vocalists that debuted in 2013. They were originally supposed to be a hip hop group. They have songs for any genre you can think of. I would recommend you check out: Black Swan Fake Love Mic Drop Danger Fire Dope Not Today Save Me On: Kinetic Manifesto Film Just be sure to have CCs on for any of these songs, because they are mostly in Korean. Another reason to have the CCs on, is because their lyrics are very deep and meaningful and tend to touch on real life issues like mental health, socioeconomic injustice, self love and development, and youth and female empowerment. They do have two other all English songs those are Dynamite and Permission to Dance. Like Butter, both of those songs are upbeat songs that were released to send out positive vibes during the pandemic. They do write their own music. The 3 rappers are the primary writers for the group, but all 7 members do write.

"I can understand why these guys are so famous", oh you have no idea. Butter is the tip of iceberg of what BTS is capable of as a group. Their songs in Korean are a lot more complex and versatile sonically and lyrically. BTS officially debuted in 2013 and the groups members ages range from 24-29 years old. Keep in mind BTS has been a group for over 8 years and have over 250 songs but only 3 are fully English. They achieved their worldwide success without the help of singing in English. They've had 6 number 1 songs and 5 number 1 albums in the US alone. BTS has been nominated for 2 Grammys and also won artist of the year at the American Music Awards. Butter also holds the record for the most viewed video on youtube in 24 hours with 108.2 million views and their video for their song Dynamite is number 2 with 101.1 million views in 24 hours. There are 3 rappers and 2 of them were underground rappers in South Korea before joining BTS. They do write and/or produce most of their songs but they also work with a lot of writers and producers too. The thing with BTS who have throw out any preconceived notions about "boy bands". Most of their fans are adults over the age of 25 with many in their 50's and 60's even. Also they do more than just pop music. BTS can do it all hiphop, edm, rnb, latin, neo-soul, jazz, pop/rock etc. They also experiment by doing their own solo songs and mixtapes. The 3 rappers of the group have 5 solo mixtapes between them. The main reason I think BTS is so popular and loved is because their lyrical content is relatable to people of all ages and backgrounds. They don't go around singing about having sex, doing drugs, how much money they have. They talk about self love, mental health, loss, women empowerment, societal expectations/injustices, economic inequalities, bullying, and so much more. Another thing is BTS is very much an underdog story. They started from a small and almost bankrupt company in South Korea where all 7 of them had to share a bedroom and now that same company is worth billions over 8 years later. They had all the odds stacked against them because they didn't come from a big company but they continued to prevail and are now they aren't just the biggest kpop group or the biggest boy band, but they are they biggest music group in the world right now. BTS started as a primarily hip hop group, lol, and three of the members are almost exclusively rappers, two of whom started in the underground hip-hop scene in South Korea prior to joining BTS. All three have also released solo mix tapes with their rap. Suga, who goes by AgustD for his solo work, is a highly sought after rapper and producer separate from BTS. You would probably love the music video for his song Daechwita. They do have some very poppy songs, lol, but that is...a tiny sliver of who they are and what they do. There is just....a depressing degree of misinformation about them out there. I would actually suggest you watch BTS Room Live. It is a very chill live performance about 10 minutes long of a medley of some of their B side tracks from their first album up to their most recent. It will give you a good idea of the different types of music they do.

BTS has a vast discography with a multitude of genres. You will need to turn on the subtitles but you will get used to it. Some reactors watch an MV twice, once for the visuals and once for the lyrics. Just let Army (the BTS fan base) know what genre you are interested in and we will steer you in the right direction! 💜

Thanks for this reaction. BTS is consisting of three rappers and four vocalists. And all seven of them are excellent dancers. They do a wide variety of music, but basically they are rooted in hip-hop. If you interested in their rap songs, I recommend We On, Jump, Mic Drop, Cypher 1-4, Daechwita(Agust D 대취타, Suga's solo), Ugh, Interlude : Shadow, DDAENG, Outro : Tear. All seven members are participating in making their songs by writing, composing, and producing them. Actually, Butter's rap part was created by BTS leader RM. When an album or song is released, RM communicates with fans and tells them the production story of who made which part of the song and what background the song was made. And if you're interested in BTS' other MVs, I recommend.... Mic Drop (It's one of their billion-view music video.) Blood sweat & tears FIRE On kinetic manifesto film Black Swan Save me→I'm fine Daechwita(Agust D 대취타, Suga's solo) These are pretty different from Butter or permission to dance or Dynamite.(Only these three songs are fully English.These three songs have been written in English since the Pandemic to give energy to people around the world.) And, all of their music videos provide English subtitles. :) Their lyrics are very deep and beautiful. ​ Or, I think it would be good to follow a story line. DNA: Joy of fateful love → Fake Love: Realizing that love was a lie → IDOL, The Truth Untold, Epiphany, Answer Love Myself: To love other people completely, you should love yourself first. Oh, can I introduce a K-pop girl group? Actually, I'm ARMY, but I'm also a fan of Oh My Girl. They are a girl group with a dreamy fairy tale-like feeling that is rare in current Korea. They were from a small company and were unknown for almost five years, but they proved their talents in the contest QUEENDOM and became increasingly popular in Korea. I'd like to introduce some live performances that are arranged with their own ideas in QUEENDOM. DESTINY TWILIGHT (Queendom ver.) Guerilla And Remember Me, Nonstop, Dolphin, and Closer are also good songs. I hope you can listen to these when you have time someday. :)

They cover so many genres its crazy. They also release music in Japanese bc outside of Korea, Japan is the biggest KPop market. They write and produce their own music. Butter is the only English song that they had a hand in though. There are 3 rappers and 4 vocalists. They started out as a hip hop group in 2013. They evolved over time, but still have an underlying hip hop style.

Few things…. BTS music is not just for the young. We have a LOT of older gens in the fan base, including 50 year old me. This is their feel good song they release during the pandemic to bring cheer and joy. If you delve into their extensive and amazing discography, you will discover how talented they are in their lyricism, production, singing, dancing, performing and their messages. They are not your typical boy band. They are artists and wonderful human beings who are role models for hard work, kindness, empathy, and values.

BTS is SO MUCH MORE than Pop!!! They do everything. You need to listen to a wide range of their music. The first video I watched was Dope and it blew me away. I was immediately sucked down the BTS rabbit hole. They are just phenomenal, performance, dance, voice, as well as their many contributions to worthy causes and organization, their messages to youth addressing a host of issues. Most of their songs are a mix of Korean and English. They have 3 full English songs. Dynamite Butter Permission to Dance And a collab with Coldplay "My Universe" Most of their music is written and produced by them. There are a few songs written by Lauv, Ed Sheeran, ect. But they even participated in writing "My Universe" with Chris Martin from Coldplay. RM, Suga, and J-Hope are the primary song writers and producers. BigHit Music does have in house producers that work with BTS. They started with 1 choreographer. Occasionally they have guest choreographers. J-Hope also helps with the choreography and teaching the other members. He is the Dance Leader.

If you listen to BTS in chronological order you will not believe it's the same group. They do all kind of music. And with time they evolved and changed a lot. I recommend you check Come back home, Spine Breaker, Dis-ease (there r no music videos to these songs, you can find lyric videos for these). I hope you check these. They r very different from what you saw now. More hip-hop I'd say

Just to add it here, Come Back Home is a remake from SeoTaji and The Boys, the grandfathers of kpop, and BTS was the only group allowed to do it. There is an MV and it's super cool, but it's like a film, rather than typical music video and there is no BTS in it, just their singing. Butter (hotter mix) shows the non serious side of BTS and I hope you get around to watching that as well. But like down in the comments ON/Mic Drop/Dope/Black Swan/Blood Sweat and Tears/Fire are just a small amount of what they have to offer. As someone who is more into metal/rock I find these guys refreshing. For me putting the label of K pop for them doesn't make sense, they are in a league of their own. These english songs were written by other people, but primarily they have been writing and producing the bulk of their music since they started (2013). The rappers (3 of them) all have unbelievable solos (check out "Daechwita" or "Do You") as well as rapline songs ("UGH" and "Ddaeng" are both amazing). ...same for the vocalists...solo work, vocal line songs and group songs. I promise they are worth checking into. Some group songs you would probably enjoy are "Mic Drop", "Not Today" or "ON: Kinetic Manifesto" to start you out. BTS is a phenomenon of crossing cultural barriers, most of their songs are in their language Hangul (Korean). Different styles of music, dance and quality and hard work characterize them. They can all sing, and they all write and arrange their music, excellent songwriters and music producers. With a support staff, choreographies, visuals, creatives working for the product of excellence. His lyrics are not superficial, and his albums are conceptual. Anyway. Their English songs are all very poppy and are not representative of their work. They rap, they sing, they can do RnB, Hip Hop, Jazz, Pop. The three rappers write the most songs and produce. All are members of the Korean Music Association with the three rappers permanent members as of 2020. If you like rap, you should check out Mic Drop and the Cyphers, but almost every song has rap linesin it, which is so refreshing. Check out Black Swan and ON (Kinetic manifesto version) which are based on the archetype concepts of Persona, Shadow and Ego by Swiss Psychiatrist Jung. Blue & Grey is a very sad song, as well as FIlm Out which is not in Korean but Japanese. They are incredible in their music videos, they are incredible and amazing LIVE.

Recommend: NPR Tiny Desk Concert 1 more all English song (Dynamite) and 2 of their own songs. Just them with a band. They have participated in the creation of most of their songs. They have had the same choreographer since their debut in 2013. Their management company (BigHit now under HYBE) has never skimped on MV quality or their first class backup dancers.

bts cover a wide variety of genres but their roots are in hiphop, you'll enjoy exploring them You’d likely enjoy a lot of their music but I’ll recommend Hip Hop Lover an older song that is their love letter to the genre of hip hop. The 3 rappers have many fantastic rapline only songs, I’ll suggest “Ugh” it’s amazing (no MV so watch a lyric video, they have only performed it live once and you will likely get a copyright strike for that so if you watch a live of it don’t put it up, it helps to also react to Ugh explanation by a Korean on DKDKTV afterwards as the word play etc of the rappers is really amazing). Their all English songs are Dynamite, Butter and Permission to Dance. Their collab song in all English is a Steve Aoki song titled Waste It on Me and features the multi talented voices of the BTS members RM (main rapper and leader of BTS), Jimin (lead vocalist, main dancer of BTS) and Jungkook (main vocalist and lead dancer of BTS). BTS does write and produce almost all of their own music. All of the members have their own solo songs as well and are included on the BTS albums. The rappers RM, Suga (Agust D) and J-Hope all have individual mixtapes. I'm happy that you liked it when you expected not to. BTS is not a poppy boy band, they have so many different styles of music. As others below have requested Black Swan is a beautiful song and choreography. If you enjoy rap they have rap and cyphers. Like ballads? They have them. They have nearly every genre of music, they will surprise you. To answer your questions there are 7 members in the group 4 vocalists and 3 rappers. Their lyrics are mostly Korean usually with a little english. Butter, Dynamite, and Permission to Dance are the only full english songs and "poppy". While they did not write Butter or Dynamite they are involved with writing and producing their music. If you give them a chance you will find songs you like. They are multi-talented performers and good humans. Their music contains messages, turn on the captions for the Korean lyrics. Some of their videos are broken down by DKDKTV explaining the symbolism or messages that "we" as non Koreans don't understand.

BTS - Bangtan Sonyeondan - Korean for Bulletproof Boy Scouts - is a really inspirational underdog story. They debuted in 2013, in South Korea, under Big Hit Entertainment, as a Hip Hop Idol Group (Under the K Pop umbrella). They were supposed to be a Hip Hop/Rap group, but their CEO changed it to a Hip Hop Idol group. Their sound has evolved and changed over time, but they are at their core, hip hop. They have 3 rappers and 4 vocalists, and they are known for crossing and fusing genres. They have 3 fully English songs, and this is one of them. They didn't write the full song, but RM (Kim Namjoon - Group Leader, Main Rapper, and Songwriter-Producer) has writing credits on it. Their English songs mostly aren't written by them. Most of their discography is written and produced by them. Their discography is over 300 songs, they have songs in Korean, Japanese, and English. All 7 members have solo projects they release for free on sound cloud. I'm including here a medley of 7 songs in a 10 minute video, that BTS dropped for their fanbase (ARMY) for their 8 year anniversary celebration. The video should give you a good picture of their diversity and range of their music over the years from debut (6/12/2013) to 2020. They definitely write their own music, they have a choreographer but Jhope does contribute to it many times. Yes their all English songs are more poppy, but go back to the beginning they were more hip hop. Like others have said they are popular due to what they stand for, their hard work , the hardships they had to endure to get to where they are today. They have 7 members 3 rappers two of which were underground rappers as teens but got q lot of criticisms for leaving that scene and becoming an idol which all three rappers address in some of their songs. Then their is 4 vocalist in their early days they did rap a little bit but they don't now , only one will if he needs to fill in for someone. Anyway maybe watch some mini documentaries to learn all about them because they are not your typical boy band like backstreet boys or insync. Thanks for the reactions hope you do more.
