@@samdonald198 I don't interpret that as reincarnation, but rather each of them feeling confused about what is happening to them - the old woman confused by what's going to happen to her in death and the baby being confused about coming into this whole new world. The circle of life.

I've always understood this song to be about the circle of life and death. I read an interview from the lead singer, Ed Kowalczyk, he said "It was something that we hoped would honor the memory of a girl we grew up with and help her family cope with the sorrow - which it seems to have accomplished - keeping with the theme of the song," A longtime friend of the band was killed by a drunk driver after fleeing a robbery, at only 19. Barbara Lewis was also a registered organ donor; when she died, she helped save the lives of many people, including a ten-month-old baby who received her liver. I always found that interesting. Also, on a side note, I remember the movie Powder! Loved it. I can see the reference! Thanks for the reaction!

That's like how I worked with this girl at a call center when I as younger. She was an identical twin, and her sister worked as a bartender at a local pub. I new one better than the other, but after coming back to work in January, after the holidays, I learned that both sisters, born minutes apart, had also passed away minutes apart in the hospital after a head on collision with a drunk driver on New Years Eve. The Fray - "How To Save a Life" always makes me think if them. That song has become so connected to that event, for me. It was the last time I have ever had a drink at the holidays. In honor of them.
@jessicahouser48237 күн бұрын
@KeithDCanada I can totally understand that. There are many things I associate with this in my life as well. I've seen more than my fair share of tragedy, that's for sure. It's difficult. That is a great way to honor those you lost... I like that. "How to Save a Life" is an amazing song also. Thanks for sharing that with us all... I appreciate that.

My parents had recently divorced and my dad remarried. My stepmom and I bonded when this album came out. We stayed up all night to be the first one at Peaches to buy the CD and had it on replay all summer. We've been very close every since. So beautiful and sad at the same time because when you die, you do leave all those confusing/negative things about life at the door and are free of all ailments or burdens…. The band dedicated this song to Barbara Lewis, one of their high school friends who was killed by a drunk driver around the time it was written. Her brother-in-law Cory told Songfacts the story: "The song's lyrics are mostly an analogy. Barb donated several organs, including her heart. She was close with Ed [lead singer Ed Kowalczyk] and the guys and died in a car collision with a fleeing armed robber. These lyrics are constantly misunderstood! Yes, Ed is speaking to the circle of life, but specifically to how Barb's life gave new life to many. The angel, the baby down the hall, the pale blue eyes (of Barb), the pain ("confusion")... the lyrics are wholly Ed's interpretation of his experience and perception of Barb's impact. Our family has become close with the most genuine and caring man who is still alive today (over 10 years later), who has Barb's heart beating in his chest! 'Lightning Crashes' literally lives on." Ed Kowalczyk doesn't like to talk about the meaning of this song, but he did explain its creation. "I wrote 'Lightning Crashes' on an acoustic guitar in my brother's bedroom shortly before I had moved out of my parents' house and gotten my first place of my own." Kowalczyk says that the video for "Lightning Crashes" has caused misinterpretations of the song's intent.

"While the clip is shot in a home environment, I envisioned it taking place in a hospital, where all these simultaneous deaths and births are going on, one family mourning the loss of a woman while a screaming baby emerges from a young mother in another room. Nobody's dying in the act of childbirth, as some viewers think. What you're seeing is actually a happy ending based on a kind of transference of life."

Live (the band) were formed in Pennsylvania in the 80's and broke big in the 90's as part of the grunge rock scene, even though they were not from Seattle, Washington like most grunge bands... Formed by Ed Kowalczyk (vocals/ guitar), Chad Taylor (guitar), Patrick Dahlheimer (bass) and Chad Gracey (drums), they recorded an indie album as The Death of a Dictionary in 1989 before adopting the name Live... and releasing their debut album 'Mental Jewelry' in late 1991... MTV gave Live some airplay and the album sold decently w/ the single 'Operation Spirit'... 2nd album 'Throwing Copper' in 1994 came around the time of Nirvana's demise and Kurt Cobain's death... and the void left gave Live the opportunity to break big... and they did. First single 'Selling the drama' was a hit on MTV and radio and 'Throwing Copper' went to #1 on the US charts and was a huge hit worldwide (8x platinum in the US alone) w/ the singles - 'Lightning crashes' ... 'I alone'... 'All over you' ... 'Iris'... However, Live began experiencing decline w/ 3rd album 'Secret Samadhi' in 1997, which sold platinum in the US (#1 on the charts) as the grunge/ alternative rock scene began to drop in demand... singles included - "Lakini's juice"... 'Turn my head'... 'Freaks'... 4th album by Live 'The distance to here' in 1999 was hit overseas but only platinum success in the US w/ the singles "The Dolphin's cry"... 'Run to the water'... Live's 5th album 'V' was released in 2001... the single 'Overcome' was a radio hit in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks... the single 'Simple creed'... didn't do well and the album failed to sell a half million copies. After 2 more albums ('Birds of pray' in 2003 and 'Song from Black Mountain' in 2006)... Live fell apart internally as frontman Ed Kowalczyk opted for a solo career. Rather than fold, Live released their last album 'The Turn' in 2014 w/ Chris Shinn (vocals/ guitar) but the band had a change of heart after the tour and reunited w/ Ed Kowalczyk... Unfortunately, bad business decisions and clashes between the band members resulted in guitarist Chad Taylor being fired in 2022... Both drummer Chad Gracey and bassist Patrick Dahlheimer also left Live shortly after. Currently, Ed Kowalczyk has formed a new line-up for Live and has toured in 2023 and has said that new music will be coming.

This song and the album that it's from rocketed this band into stardom. They went from playing crowds of maybe a thousand people, to playing crowds of 20,000 people. The album Throwing Copper was an almost once in a generation explosion onto the music scene at the time. To this day there are still people in the industry who don't understand why or how it happened, but are unable to deny it.
