Part 8 of Hamilton was an absolute trip and a half! Act I down, 1 act to go!! Let's gooooooo! 😤🔥 Anyway just like with the previous videos, KZbin was shooting me like Aaron Burr over the music AND the visuals, so I had to make some cuts to the songs & cover it with text (this was the least intrusive editing method I could find that they’d accept). I posted the entire intact reaction (full songs, no text covering the visuals etc.) on my patreon here www.patreon.com/posts/114842488 if you’re interested, but if not I’d suggest pulling up the soundtrack & playing it own your own so you can hear the INSANITY of what I’m hearing in full lol. PLEASE DO NOT SPOIL MAJOR PLOT POINTS IN YOUR COMMENTS (or at least start your comment with "spoilers" so I know to avoid it)! It takes away the point of future reactions if you just tell me everything that happens later so instead let me experience it during the process of watching Hamilton myself. I have moderators who are scanning the comments & deleting spoilery comments so don’t leave spoilers cause it will just get removed anyways. Lastly if you see others leaving comments that include spoilers please reply to it indicating that it has spoilers so I know not to read it, thank you in advance. Anyways make sure to check out the other parts here kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4mQnIyfe6p4rLs & subscribe not to miss future parts! 🦁❤💛

Ok time for me to pause and play Fun Facts!!! It brings me great joy that you pointed out that “Hamilton showed up at Burr’s door during family night, there’s clearly something going on” It’s actually discussed in the behind the scenes stuff that Leslie Odam Jr (Burr) had a loooooong conversation with the blocking director, choreographer, and Lin Manuel Miranda about what Hamilton would theoretically be interrupting. They didn’t want it to look like Burr just walked on stage when the door was knocked for his cue- there needed to be an actual hypothetical scene he was pulled away from and wanted to get back to. Leslie Odam finally offered “the baby is crying and his wife is bedridden sick” and they went with it. That’s one of the reasons he looks so convincingly annoyed and slightly desperate- and one of the beautiful things that happens backstage in theater all the time. The actors are always thinking about what else is going on in the world around the characters, not just what’s happening on stage. I Really really really appreciate that you noticed that split second. 💜

@@AmariLeone One of the MOST frustrating things about learning historical facts is HOW MANY times the US was close to getting over slavery only to have it thwarted by some sideways thing you don't see coming. Rutherford B Hayes presidential election was contested and he made a back room deal that got him the presidency but removed federal troops from the south which left black people unprotected and ushered in the Jim Crow era which we are STILL recovering from. That one 4 yr presidency caused 88 years of formal segregation.

@@AmariLeone Hamilton might have been feeling cocky up til then; he'd come through the war alive and without any permanent, disfiguring injuries, he had a loving wife and a new baby, he'd become a decorated war hero, and he was on the best of terms with George Washington. Life was looking good, and he felt settled. Then he gets word that Laurens was killed by fleeing British troops AFTER the war was over, and all of a sudden real life came crashing down on him. His mother died when she was 39. Her cousin, who took Alex and his brother in after their mother's death, committed suicide at age 33. Laurens was dead at age 27. His death just brought that feeling back to Alex that "time was running out" for him. According to Chernow's biography, Hamilton always had this feeling that he would die young, that he had to get everything done _now_ and not wait even one more day. Laurens' death brought that all back to him. Plus, working was the only way he knew to deal with his grief. As for the Treasury Secretary position, the man had a HUUUGE ego, ok? But he'd watched his mother run her grocery, and then he clerked for her landlord from the time he was 14, so he understands money in ways that few of the Founding Fathers ever did. He knew no one else could up a financial system that worked for every state and every territory the way he could. He really was a genius.

In musical theater.... there is a term called the "I Want"-song. You can see them really easily in Disney movies: "i want adventure in the great wide somewhere" or "I want to be where the people are / what would I do to be where you are" That's why each character is singing the theme from their I-want-song instead of the song they are introduced with. A fun exercise to do when your viewing experience is done.... go back and count how many I-want-songs Aaron Burr gets to sing in this show.

The way Eliza combines her and Angelica's lines to sing "what would be enough to be satisfied" rips my heart out every time. and then its followed by the combo line "how do you write like history has it's eyes on you", which answers itself: Hamilton writes like he's running out of time because he knows that history has it's eyes on him (as he says earlier "gentlemen of the jury, I'm curious, bare with me, are you aware that we're making history?"). ANd he KNOWS that he might be running out of time, he's always had that mindset, one of the first things we hear him say is "see I never thought I'd live past twenty, where I come from some get half as many." It's just brilliant story telling, I love this song so much, it feels like it lays out the mindset and drive of each character. Great reaction as always!! 👑👑

poem 3?? i've lost track but these are so fun to write: Yo, Amari’s on vacay, but nah, he won’t rest, Reaction on lock, he’s got that Non-stop zest! While some would “Take a Break,” he’s breaking down lines, His keen mind’s tracking all those internal rhymes. Amari sees Hamilton’s coat switch in place, From war to the courtroom, a whole new phase. “In New York, you can be a new man,” so clear, Each coat is a symbol - Ham shifts gears, no fear. He feels Eliza’s helplessness in Ham’s neglect, And picks up on Hamilton’s promise, left unchecked. He clocks every theme, every “I want” they convey, From “My Shot” to “Helpless” - the whole damn ballet. He clocks Burr’s cat-like, lawyerly vibe, Ham’s the eager pup, right by his side. With Burr’s legal cool and Hamilton’s bark, It’s cat meets dog - a simmering spark. [click, BOOM!] Hamilton kicks doors, he’s got no time to wait, While Burr’s at the threshold, observing his fate. Ham seizes each shot, “Any crack, I’m all in,” While Burr’s like a vampire, waiting for invite to begin. So here’s to Amari, dissecting each layer, Not throwing his shot - he’s our top-level player. Kick through that door, every cracked frame or block, This man ain’t just watching - he’s ticking Non-stop!

one of the most interesting things about hamilton to me is how lin even like decided that treasury secretary alexander hamilton would be a good subject for a rap musical in the first place. i really think that the set up between him and burr, where they had such parallel lives in so many ways but were just so fundamentally philosophically irreconcilable, is the part of this history that was just begging to be made a musical. their status as character foils is the driving force of the whole thing. i think that this song perfectly demonstrates how instrumental this relationship is and how well suited it is to this storytelling medium, but this song is also a perfect example of why rap specifically works so well for this story. we're so used to hamilton as a concept at this point that it's hard to wrap our heads around just how shocking it was for a musical about an unrelated time period to be told through rap, and yet what style could've suited hamilton better? this song really raises the stakes of hamilton's prolific genius, and the words literally pouring out of him is just so conducive to rap. i don't know, this comment went very long but i just think that nonstop works so well as a thesis statement for why hamilton works

i remember seeing that Lin had read a biography of Hamilton and his reaction was - this story is the story of rap. I think he was also 'on vacation' lol

The first song Linn wrote for this was Alexander Hamilton. Long before the musical, he did a performance of this in the Whitehouse for the Obamas. Everyone in the room cracks up when he says he's working on a musical about Hamilton because it was such a ridiculous idea. Then as he sang the song you can see how he sells it and they all get onboard.

I love hearing your thoughts on Hamilton so much. You've pointed out so many things I've never noticed, and I've been a fan of Hamilton since like 2017 😭I guess it just goes to show that one person can't catch everything. A cool detail I thought I would mention is the difference in Eliza and Angelica's reactions to Alexander pulling his hands away from them. When Alexander pulls away from Angelica, she looks slightly surprised, but mostly her face and body language is saying, "yeah, this is Alexander. Why should I be surprised?" because Angelica is a lot more aware of how Alexander's mind works since they're on a similar level in that way. Whereas, when he pulls away from Eliza, she freezes and then kind of recoils as she realizes what he's saying to her, especially as he looks at her and says, "I am not throwing away my shot" right to her face. Her shock also makes sense when you think about how up until this point, Alexander has never raised his voice or shown this level of frustration toward her (that we've seen, anyway). I think this shows Eliza's naivety and hopefulness. She was hoping that he would stay with her and their kids so much that when he said he was leaving for real, it completely shocked her. Every time I see that part I just wanna give her a hug.
@AmariLeoneАй бұрын
Wow! What an incredible breakdown of this moment! I missed that detail! As you said "I guess it just goes to show that one person can't catch everything"
@-Olea-28 күн бұрын
Why would he be leaving though? Wasn't the government based in NY, where they lived, at the time?
@youaretallandhandsome28 күн бұрын
@@-Olea- lol I meant like leaving her and the kids emotionally. Most people can't take on that much responsibility at work and still be present emotionally for their family. Before this point, Alexander was just a lawyer, a pretty normal job, but at this point, he's literally taking on being the secretary of the Treasury. We continue to see just how emotionally unavailable and absorbed in work Alexander is in the upcoming songs in Act 2. Not only that, but he actually physically will be gone too since, once again, his new job is very serious and will require him to be working overtime.

Historical fun fact: Burr had chronic illness from heatstroke after the battle of Monmouth. He went to Phillip Schuyler's home in Albany to study for the Law Bar. And you're right, if Alexander had stayed a lawyer and not worked so hard, we might not have the country we have now. I think he worked so hard on the Federalist Papers because he was worried that the quarreling in forming a government would end of everything they fought for.
@LynnLeFey1Ай бұрын
This was the song that REALLY caught my attention with my first listen, and for some reason, Burr's line 'I'm taking my time, watching the afterbirth of a nation, watching the tensions grow." The obvious nod to 'Birth of Nation', and just the notion of the messiness of making real an ideal.

One of the things that's fun watching your videos is that I see you recognizing themes as they transition between songs referencing previous songs/characters/moods. I know the transitions are coming because I've seen the show so many times so I have the plot and songlist memorized, but you hear a little piano motif and I see your eyes dart to the side searching for where you know that from in prior songs. It's really fun to watch someone with musicality hear the intentions of the writers.

Thank you for putting this out while on vacation!! Always looking forward to these. I'll try to keep all my comments in one single comment this time around. 3:15 - new coat for the new Secretary of the Treasury 7:45 - I think Hamilton has such good timing on when and how they change the mood of things throughout the show, it's truly a rollercoaster when you watch it through in one sitting, which I hope you do after you're finished with it, whenever that may be. It's an experience (or even better, if you have the chance to see it live) 19:29 - One of the few things I know about historical differences and poetic licenses Lin took in writing the musical is the fact that Angelica was already married when they met, but she and Alexander did exchange a lot of letters, which leads some historians to believe they might have had an affair, but I guess no one knows for sure (and like you said, i know you're reacting to the musical and I think it's super strong the way these characters' relationship was built). 23:50 - Yes!! It's like at first she's trying to reassure him (which she feels she might have to do) and know she's asking to be reassured. Maybe she's noticed where his priorities lie. 24:40 - Motifs don't stop, facts. Have you ever seen encanto? The song "We don't talk about Bruno" is a lot like that (Lin wrote the music for that movie too). Please don't stop talking about motifs, they're a huge part of Hamilton. 30:29-31:29 - "songs that are the midset of the characters and how their minds have changed" -- chef's kiss! Thank you for another awesome reaction video and sharing your insights with us! 👑👑👑

Yeah, this is what I was wondering about. I knew that the Capitol was in New York City for a while, but I wasn't sure if it was for the whole time until DC was built. Didn't realize it was in Philly for a while. If it was in New York at this point, where were the Hamiltons living? Didn't the song that Hamilton sang to Eliza back when they were first courting talk about them getting a house in the Bronx? Would that have been far enough away from the capitol for it to be more than a day by horseback?

Love your musical insights. Some background notes. Check out the lighting cues. Alexander’s internal thoughts are often signaled by a change to blue light. Secondly, in a previous video you noted that Alex is chaotic and always on the move. The show is choreographed so that Burr always moves across the stage in straight lines, while Alex moves in circular motions. Signifying his determination to reach his goals /destination by any means. Even if he has to go over & around obstacles.

Are you ready for some fun facts? Because it's actually pretty cool stuff Angelica actually married for love, eloping with a man that she was legitimately happy with. They moved to London (so it wasn't just a trip, she was leaving the continent entirely). It was entirely possible the two were flirting- they both had that personality of being VERY charismatic- but it's unlikely that there was some kind of relationship between the two, unrequited or otherwise. It was something added to the musical for the sake of drama. XD You mentioned Eliza being cycled in as Alexander watches Angelica leave, and I think it's less a sign of her insecurity, and more that Alexander didn't see her while fixated on the departing Angelica. If the stage weren't moving and she'd been at his side the entire time, she would have been steadfastedly looking right at him while singing. She was there at his side, but he couldn't see her until he finally moved his thoughts off of Angelica. Welcome to the world of Musicals, where motifs climaxing in the Act 1 finale is the norm. :))) And you're right! Each of those songs are emblematic of each character, and invoke specific messages. Eliza asking about what would be enough, and slipping into "Satisfied" alongside her sister, is acknowledging at last that there's something missing here, and she feels *helpless* about it. The three invocations (so far) of "Look around" have been, "Wow! We're witnessing a big change in history!", "We are so lucky to be alive, let's be content with that!", and now, "We're lucky to be alive, so let's make the most of the time we have by doing as much as possible." The state's capitol wasn't in D.C. yet. :) That didn't exist yet. :) It was just Virginia at the time. :) At the time, governance was largely done in New York. Treasury = money, State = governing the people.
