I remember when I bought this Album (CD), peeled that clear plastic off the album, opened the CD, smelled the booklet, then popped in the disk. Press Play... This was the first song! I replayed it before listening to the rest of the album, but still proceeded to listen the Entire album start to finish. Such a great Album, it was just as good as Mer De Noms. I got this back in 2003 when it came out.

When I went through the booklet and saw that some of the band members changed up, I was a little sad, but it turned out not mattering at all.

The lyrics for this whole album were written from the perspective of watching how addiction destroys friends and families. Maynard was never a drug addict himself. I know this cos I had an APC dvd with 13th step which had extra commentary on all the tracks.

This is the most Toolish song from APC. It completely stands out from the rest of the album bay far. In saying that, I still think the Noose is the best song of this album followed by The Outsider.

This song is about jonesing for a drug, then using people to get more. Pretending to care but you don't. The singular voice of addiction. They talk and all you care about is give me this fix. It's mine. The end is after taking the heroin (likely as in another song he talks about turning blue and pushing a dragon down the hole).the softness at the end is the addiction, satiated for a moment as it fades. The frenzied song before is the cravings making you lose control. Ive lived this. And Maynard has talked of this

When Tool was on a tour with Alice in Chains back in the day I do believe this album was inspired by him witnessing Layne Stayley going down with his heroin addiction. Whole album is great. I could be wrong so don't quote me on this.

I interpret this song from the view of an addict in search for their choice of drug. The subtleties of the tone of the song and builds up until you get what you came for. Kind of like how Gollum from the lord of the rings viewed the ring.

Thirteenth step was the first album I bought on my own at age 13 in 2003... I bought it with my own allowance. I watched the "weak and powerless" and "the outsider" videos on Yahoo music lol. I really loved what I heard then decided to go for it when I saw it at borders (nostalgia, am I freaking right? All the youth in my small Metro city in NC hung out there, all the sketchy hipsters would loiter en masse every Friday and Saturday night, I'm sure the establishment loved all the shoplifting). Pretty sure it was between $16-20, CDs were hella expensive but it was worth every penny as I listened to it in my portable player over and OVER, especially on the road to the beach that summer, a 5 hour drive.

Mike Patton fan here. Mondo Cane is Mike Patton and the Italian Metropole Orchestra, the material is 60s Italian theme songs. Bands that's he's in... FNM, Mr Bungle, Tomahawk, Fantomas, Lovage, Dillinger Escape Plan, Hemophiliac, Weird Little Boy, General Patton VS. The X-ecutioners, Mondo Cane, Dead Cross, and Corpse Flower. Everyone is different and that's not including the other artists he's worked with. Also sings in... English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and Italian. Try "Crack Hitler" and watch lyrics, he screams so hard it's insane, and "This Guy's In Love With You" for great full blown beautiful.

The cover art is actually super cool. You’ll notice the eye under the yellow slug is clear, and the other one is glossy and blood shot. Yellow is supposed to represent warmth, positivity, overall good. The slug, believe it or not, often represents the spiritual side of life and are seen as guardians and helpers. That really brings together the whole concept of this album. I’m not sure if you’ve done “feathers” yet, but that is next level APC
