“It’s lying,crying,bleeding on the floor / So you lay down on it/ And you do it some more” Some of the most dark, disturbing lyrics to sneak onto radio. ALL these lyrics are so poetic and gripping- Mike Patton’s talents are varied and extraordinary . Yet he trolled every interview, and stayed humble, original and unconventionally creative to this day.

Faith No More stylistically is all over the genre map, chili peppers were one trick pony‘s, There’s no comparison, I don’t hate the chili peppers but Anthony Kiedis is not even in the same building as Mike Patton vocally

It says a lot that my favorite RHCP songs featured another vocalist alongside Kiedis. That person being Josh Klinghoffer, the guy who replaced, and then was replaced by, John Fruscianti. Look Around and Monarchy of Roses are good examples. And Josh had a song called Anymore that's just him signing.

There has been lot's about the beef between Patton and Kiedis. It kicked off after the album that Epic is on (The Real Thing) came out in 1989 and Kiedis said Patton was copying his style, or needed to get a style of his own. FNM never really cared and if anything it gave them some free publicity. Patton has gone on record as being critical of rockstars with ego’s and always gone against the trope himself. Things went really bad at the end of the 90's when RHCP and Mr Bungle (who were both on Warner Bros recond label) released albums with very similar titles - Californication and California respectively. The story goes that Kiedis got the record company to delay the Mr Bungle release so that RHCP's album would come out first. Then he got Mr Bungle kicked off a number of high profile festivals in Europe and Australia. In fairness, Mr Bungle did go on stage dressed as RHCP and played some of their songs whilst also being less than complimentary (look up the video, it's WILD!). FNM and Mr Bungle have both utilised many different styles in their music, funk being one of them. FNM and Mr Bungle though progressed way beyond this and have done so much diverse stuff it's actually mind boggling. RHCP have always just been RHCP...

This song came out when I was in elementary school, and this video was so good. I loved watching it when it was on. FNM and Mike Patton especially really influenced my style and love for certain genres. Sidenote I remember when the video gained controversy due to the scene at the end where the fish is out of water and appears to be dying on camera. PETA went after them. And MTV cut that end off when showing the video for a while.

Roddy Bottom (now of the band Man on Man) plays keyboards for Faith No More. The fish was a gift from Björk, and used to sit in a bowl ontop of a piano in Roddy's Mom's house. PETA had a fit about the scene in the video and I recall an MTV interview with Bill (the bass player) and Roddy where they ask about the fish and one of them say something like (paraphrasing) "it gave the fish a part of its personality that it may not have known about before"

This is the video that started the feud between Anthony and Mike. Anthony thought that Mike was ripping off his stage moves in this video. He was worried that people would think RHCP was ripping off FNM because prior to this RHCP had not had a mainstream hit. While I enjoy both FNM and RHCP, I can't really see any correlation between their music. They really sound nothing alike, and if they are lumped together, it tends to be more because of the feud between Anthony and Mike more than any similarity in sound.

There was something between Patton and Kiedis. It carried over until 1999/2000 at least when Mr Bungle and RHCP were booked at the same festival around the release of Mr Bungles California and RHCP's Californication. Kiedis being the diva he is refused to play if Bungle was there, so Mr Bungle was removed from the show. This was followed by an Epic Halloween performance by Bungle where they mocked the OD death of Chili Pepper guitarist Hilel Slovak. Patton is god

FNM started in 82' as well but were more Post Punk & New Wave influenced by Bands like Killing Joke & Public Image Ltd. Who would Win in a Fight? The FNM album this was on was called “The Real Thing”. The band had recorded all the music, but had no lyrics or vocals so they were looking for a new singer. Mike Patton was hired from Mr. Bungle and he wrote all the lyrics and melodies over a period of about 10 days. They wouldn’t let him even change anything about the songs. He modeled his appearance and dancing for this song and video to mock Anthony Keidis because Anthony had accused him of copying RHCP with Mr. Bungle, but Mike always had tons of styles of music in his band. Later, Faith No More played a Halloween show dressed up as RHCP, played some of their stuff really badly, and pretended to shoot up on stage. It was pretty rough. The big salt-in-the-wound moment was when FNM won a Grammy for this song.

"Epic" ruled rock radio throughout the 1990's. MTV played the video for the song quite often as well. The video was somewhat provocative too, given how it ends with a fish out of water and gasping at the air. I read the lyrics as if they were an updated version of the sentiments expressed in The Rolling Stones "I Can't Get No Satisfaction", that is, as push back against the consumer pressures put on society by commercial interests and the impossibility of attaining the idealized good life depicted in advertising. As for the question and answer, "What is it? It's it", well, this is a bit cheeky, but Faith No More is from San Francisco and in nearby Burlingame there is a company that has been making an ice cream sandwich called "It's-It" since 1976. So a "It's-It" is a slab of vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two oatmeal cookies and dipped in chocolate! [grin]

Yes, everything Mike Patton does in this video visually is done to mock Anthony Kiedis. Their music isn't terribly similar, but Patton went out of his way to make fun of how Kiedis moves and "dances" - this wasn't the beginning of their beef, but it was the lightning that set everything between them on fire.
@porgy29
@porgy29 Жыл бұрын
I think this was the start of the beef since Patton had not actually been in Faith No More for that long at this point. And yeah it went back and forth a bit but seemed more to be coming from Kiedis, with Patton trying to keep his head down for most of it. Part of that is just because the Chili Peppers were a much bigger band than either Faith No More or Mr. Bungle. The big thing they did was get Bungle dropped from some festivals in Europe that both they and Chili Peppers had both been booked at. In retaliation Bungle did a show on Halloween where they all dressed up as caricatures the Chili Peppers and took this piss out of them such as playing parodies of their songs and taking breaks to pretend to do heroin.

No - the RHCP DID NOT 'do it first'. Faith No More did. Faith No More formed in 1977 - and were already exploring the fusion of rap and hard-core and rock sub-genres. The chillies were in school when Faith No More were an established touring and writing act. #factcheck

Anthony Keidis should’ve done a little research on the band and Mike Patton, before making those dumb comments. Mike Patton has range that Anthony and most singers wish they had. On this same album the songs Surprise Your Dead, The Real Thing, and Zombie Eaters are all different from each other and equally badass. It’s no wonder Patton is good friends with Adam Jones. Plus let’s not forget he sang Easy like Sunday Morning, a beatbox collaboration with Rahzel, and sings Opera. Oh and check out the duet between Patton and Serj from SOAD
