Fun Fact: Stevie Nicks wrote this song and planned to include it on her 1980 solo album Bella Donna. She didn't have room for it on the album, so she held it over for Fleetwood Mac's Mirage album. By this time, her friend Robin Anderson was dying of leukemia and the song became a tribute to her.

I don't know why we don't talk about Lindsey Buckingham enough as far as being one of the greatest guitarists out there, his playing is so beautiful and emotional and even though he has a really great voice his guitar work is what makes him so special, y'all should check out Silver Springs live and see how he answers Stevie's heartache with his equally aching guitar✌🍂🧡

Stevie learned to sing from her grandfather, A. J. Nicks, who had aspired to be a country music star but didn't make it. He taught her to sing harmony when she was just four years old. He'd take her to bars to sing together, and he'd put her up on the bar or a table, and they'd knock out a tune or two. He was pretty much responsible for putting her on the road to her future success.

Morning guys! You made my whole day! I needed that! This song holds a special place in my heart❤... when I was 15, I left a very bad situation from Santa Cruz California to eugene oregon. I bought a one way ticket not knowing a soul there...the whole bus ride,( I felt free and a little scared like i kinda like i was a "gypsy" "free") and i listened to gypsy on repeat in my disc player the whole ride. I Got there and one of the first things I did was get "Free spirit"tatted on my arm...( I've been going through some personal stuff lately, and this was a good reminder of the free spirit I was and still am. And I can battle the "ghosts of the past" that have been coming up...Thank you❤ much love, guys!!❤🤗🤗

I love that story, Krista! Admittedly I’ve had a hard time hearing this song over the past few years. My ex best friend loved it and named her dog Gypsy, so this song still reminds me of her. Our friendship ended badly and there’s been a lot of hurt that I’ve been trying to work through since then. But I’m going to try to remember your story instead… to replace the sadness I’ve felt with the positivity that it’s brought to you 😊💕

When she wrote Landslide and the part about the "snow-covered hills," she was sitting in a house in Aspen, Colorado that had these large floor-to-ceiling windows, and she saw her reflection in one of the windows overlaid on the mountains in the distance.

One of the biggest hits by the band, “Gypsy” is both a nostalgic reflection on Stevie Nicks’s free-spirited life before joining Fleetwood Mac and a tribute to her late friend, Robin Snyder Anderson.

I may be wrong, but I think gypsy derived from Egyptian. I believe it was a derogatory slur pertaining to mysterious and duplicitous. The whole curse thing and so on. It’s also where we get the phrase to be gypt out of something, which means to be tricked, con, or denied something by unfair means

Yep, Google says: The word "Gypsy" comes from the Middle English word gypcian, which is short for Egipcien. Egipcien comes from the Greek word Aigyptioi, which means "Egyptian". The word "Gypsy" was first used in 1574. The term "Gypsy" is an exonym, which means it is a name given to an ethnic group by outsiders. It comes from the mistaken belief that the Roma people, or a related group, were Egyptians who had been scattered among the nations by God. This belief may have come from verses in the Bible's Book of Ezekiel. The Roma people originated in the Punjab region of northern India and entered Europe between the 8th and 10th centuries. The Roma people in England and Wales refer to themselves as Romany, which is another term for the ethnic group.

it's definitely more a slur in europe than it is in america. there is a huge prejudice against romani people in places like england but honestly until recently i didn't even know it was a slur. we just dont have those same prejudices in america. here its used in a more positive connotation

You guys are spending time enjoying the Buckingham/Nicks era of Fleetwood Mac, but there were two previous incarnations of the band. The original lineup featured Peter Green (Black Magic Woman, Green Manalishi, Oh Well) followed by Bob Welch (Hypnotized). The band had a different "feel" during each incarnation, but every one was a phenomenal musical journey.

Great review, as always. The Romany folks I know... some embrace and some loathe the name "Gypsy." A Roma or a Romany/Romani person would be safe verbiage to use unless you ask, which would be similar to asking a Jew if you could call them . Just better to not. And, as in the black community, slang/words they use within their community are not to be used or embraced by civilized folks outside of their community. Yeah, I'm all woke and shit. I'll wear that tag. Call me that all you want! I am not offended in the least. Even if you are not in my community. HAHA!
