The Grateful Dead are so much more than folk.... psychedelic insanity, super funk, and just good old rock. And to answer your question, yes, Jerry Garcia was the lead guitarist. Once you know Jerry's tone, you'll never forget it. Dig deeper into this band for sure - hundreds of songs over a 30 year catalog. Terrapin Station and The Other One are two of my personal favorites for heavier/deeper, and Jack Straw is another great shorter one.

Oh, man...so much to tell! "The Dead" were not only from SF but they shared a block with The Jefferson Airplane (and others) in the Haight-Ashbury district where it all began, as you said....and, not only were they at Woodstock, but it was singer-lead guitarist Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead that gave Carlos Santana and his band LSD.......Santana thought they had plenty of time to trip and come down, but they were forced to perform hours earlier than they were scheduled to....so the entire band played their set on acid!

Their self titled album known informally as Skull and Roses, also refered to as Skullfuck, is a great introduction to the Dead. It shows their versitility. Everything from straight kick ass rock and roll to prog to country ballad and everything in between. My personal favorite is a cover of an old Buddy Hollie tune that jam morphs into a traditional folk tune with a rock twist, "Not Fade Away/Going Down the Road Feeling Bad" . Some of the best music you'll ever hear.

I saw the Dead first play "Touch of Grey" in 1982 and it came out on record in 1987, Jerry passed in 1995 at their 30 year marker. The band never faded, for many years they made more money touring than any other band on the planet, maybe one year the Rolling Stones beat them!!! I was a teen in san Francisco when jerry died. It was a sad day... At ben and Jerry's ice cream on haight and Ashbury st there was a huge totem made of flowers,stuffed animals and pics for him. Deadheads were sitting in a line for blocks on the side walk crying and singing the Grateful dead songs... It was a trip. He was a great musician and they great band!

That was my 23rd and last show. Never had the heart to see later iterations of the band. Did a bit of deadheddin around the midwest summer of 1980, 14 shows in all prior to heading to Great Lakes. Did quite a bit of aisle dancing and met a bunch of great people. Ain't no luck I learned to duck.

An absolute classic song, my parents are Deadheads so their music was always around me growing up. As a result I love this band. As for other Grateful Dead songs to check out, react to "Truckin", "Casey Jones" "Uncle John's Band" and "Ripple" for starters. I could go on and on. There was a short hippie revival when this came out in the 80’s. Greatful Dead , Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians and the soundtrack for Platoon. I would say it kinda brought the generations together musically. ✌️

The song hit in 87. Jerry died in august 95. He definitely got to experience the 10,000 people touring every summer plus the filled to the brim stadiums. They were the number 1 touring band through the 90s pulling more people and cash than anyone. Jerry sang lead and played lead guitar. They had the mild hits from the era but this was the breakthrough that put them right back in the game. They did play a lot of folk but were also largely known for their more electric rock and roll sound. The folk was at the smaller venues but the big venues they played the electric jam band sound they’re known for

Jerry had influences from folk, bluegrass, country, and rock. Jerry and at least one other member started out in a Jug Band in San Francisco. But as mentioned, their sounds range from folky acoustic songs, to rock n roll, to psychedelia and space-rock, to bluesy and country sounds. All over the place. But their biggest thing is extended jams in their live shows. This song is as good as any studio record to start with. Other good studio songs to check out: Box of Rain Sugar Magnolia Truckin' Eyes of the World Loose Lucy King Solomon's Marbles Hell In a Bucket Estimated Prophet Any Dead fan will tell you that their live stuff is where it's at. Objectively it can be a bit uneven in performance and sound. But a few terrific live performances from early live albums: Bertha Playin' In the Band Me & My Uncle Cumberland Blues China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider (need to do them together, they run together anyway) Jack Straw Tennessee Jed And that's not to get into the absolutely massive collection of concert recordings by the fans....

my mom was a hippie metalhead, weird but awesome mix, and i grew up listening to the Dead. they’re one of the ultimate cross-generational bands… everyone i know loves them. my mom saw them live in the 60s and my younger cousin saw them live in the 90s 😊 i still remember when i was in like 10th grade i made homemade christmas cards with the dead bears and turtles dancing in christmas hats, and it said “have a Jerry christmas and a happy Bob Weir” that’s how popular they still were 😃

Grateful Dead is Americana which is an smorgasbord of folk, rock, R&b, psychedelia, jazz and calypso. Jerry Garcia was the lead guitarist who had an extremely unique style complimenting Bob Weir's unique rhythm guitar. The band shared singing duties depending on the song. Robert Hunter was the lyricist for "Jerry tunes" and John Perry Barlow was the lyricist for "Bobby tunes", mostly. Grateful Dead was all about the live experience as it was all happening in the moment. They mostly walked out on stage with a blank canvas ( no setlist ) and let the energy of the moment guide them through the show. Shows consisted of two sets mostly, but on very special occasions ( mostly NYE ) they performed three sets. This made the event run around four hours. Grateful Dead are arguably responsible for the evolution of concert sound ( see Owsley Stanley ) and pretty much made it up as they went. They had peaks and valleys during their 30 year run with high points in '67, '69, '71, late '73 into '74, spring '77, '81-83, '87, '89, spring '90, spring '93. The Grateful Dead's peak was the 70s, though their 60s stuff is amazing and they were great live in the 80s. Check out live songs from 1977 or 1978, those were great years. Grateful Dead is a long strange trip in itself. A 30 year rabbit hole. Formed in 1965 in San Francisco around the Haight Asbury area. So yes, they were around at the first Woodstock, but if I recall right, they had faulty equipment and didn't release their performance. Touch of Gray was their only #1 song in their career. They defined the jam band mentality and even allowed fans to tape their shows. As far as more songs, Uncle John's Band, Trucking and Scarlett Begonias are some good ones, as is Friend of the Devil. By the way, Touch of Grey was late 80s. Jerry passed in the mid 90s and was only in his 50s.

Touch of Grey was the Grateful Dead's only Top 10 hit in their thirty year run (1965-1995). The song actually came out in 1989, I remember because I was there, sort of. Saw my first Grateful Dead concert 9/6/80 in Lewiston, Maine, an awesome show if you can find a good copy of it. They do exist. Starts with Alabama Getaway and ends with Brokedown Palace, and there is 205 minutes of music along the way. Including: Sugaree, Friend Of The Devil, China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider, Promised Land, Shakedown Street, Lost Sailor/Saint Of Circumstance, The Wheel, Playin' in The Band and One More Saturday Night. And there's more. Try that. Only got to 50 shows, but they were ALL really good. Some were even great.

I've been a Deadhead for almost 30 years, and I really enjoyed this video. This song is actually from the 80s, I remember seeing the video on MTV when I was a little kid, early 80s. I was 18 and just graduated when Jerry died, it broke my heart. I was fortunate enough see the band a few times with Jerry when I was 16/17. Some of the more popular songs are at least the more popular Dead head songs that are worth checking out are , Ripple, China Doll, Warf Rat, Truckin'(that one most people have heard), and my own favorite cause my daughter was named after the song, Cassidy. BUT I would encourage you both to check out Billy Strings doing another Robert Hunter lyrical master piece " Thunder". That one was just debut in July when Bill Krutsmann the drummer for the dead handed the lyrics over the Billy and asked him to put music to the lyrics.
