Hammerfall from Sweden all but single-handedly caused the explosive resurgence of traditional metal in the late 90s. True, the likes of Iced Earth and Stratovarius had previously achieved cult status, but nothing remotely comparable to the absolute sensation that Hammerfall created when they released their debut album in 1997. A pivotal year for the scene, also seeing debuts from other major players like Nightwish, Rhapsody and Edguy (though some would argue that the latter debuted two years prior). "Hearts on fire", one of Hammerfall's most famous and seminal songs, is from 2002. However, their success, as that of the whole scene was mostly an overseas phenomenon, that never really caught on in the US, where audiences in general would wrongly assume that nu metal was the be all end all of the whole scene in the whole world, since this was the case for the US. In reality, nu metal was all but universally reviled by European audiences ... but anyway, in this current day and age, Hammerfall's countrymen (and former support act) Sabaton seem to be way more successful in building a US fanbase. Fun fact: Hammerfall's classic drummer Anders Johansson (seen in this clip) recently served some time with none others than Manowar. Another fun fact: yes, guitarist and founder Oscar Dronjak (the tall dark-haired one) is in fact a wrestling fan. And singer Joacim Cans is an "Evil dead"-fan who even made sure that Bruce Campbell himself got to hear Hammerfall. Finally: no, power metal isn't exactly an offshoot of thrash metal. Rather the two genres were born as offshoots from traditional heavy metal, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden and the like, in the early to mid-80s. The first major power metal band was Germany's Helloween, with whom I think you are familiar. The actual term power metal, didn't have its current meaning and connotations before the late 90s, and many of the bands, Hammerfall definitely included, are reluctant to apply the term to themselves, and prefer to be called heavy metal, plain and simple.

Hi guys, glad you liked the band and song. I saw them live twice and did 2 meet and greets with them. Another song to check out from them is "Bloodbound"

You can't go wrong with Hammerfall's first five albums! Bloodbound, Heeding the Call, Steel Meets Steel, Secrets, Destined For Glory, At End of The Rainbow, Born to Rule, Let the Hammer Fall and The Dragon Lies Bleeding are all bangers! I'm probably forgetting other tracks but those tracks I mentioned are all worth checking out!

Hammerfall are simply epic. So great live. They have such a huge collection of classic tracks in their catalogue, you can simply pick anything to react to next and you will not be disappointed. Great reaction. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺🤘

Power metal is a mix between classic metal and speed metal, it does sorta have a thrash sound but it is different, it’s a very melodic fantasy driven genre

I think this song is about being a metalhead. They try to bring us down, fashions come and go, but the metal survives in our hearts. There's a couple of references to other bands like Freedom Call and Manowar (the hammer is the sign = sign of the hammer, Manowar's album).

As a Swede I appreciate you listening to Hammerfall! They have a lot of great songs, but the one that really got them into mainstream was the song Renegade. I think you would really like that! Renegades go their own way, afforded by freedoms. Sort of the American Dream, blazing your own trail.

This was from 2002... the album 'Crimson Thunder' by Hammerfall, the Swedish power metal band's 4th studio record... I recall that they opened for Dio on that tour in N. America... Hammerfall came at a time in the 90's when classic heavy metal was eradicated from commercial airplay and MTV... Their brand of Manowar-style anthemic metal was so passe that only the indie metal scene gave them a chance early in their career. As u can imagine, this imagery did not fit in the era of KoRn, Marilyn Manson, Tool, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, etc. And even I admit that singer Joacim Cans is not the best vocalist in the metal genre. However, Hammerfall recorded and toured persistently... they have their 13th(!) studio album 'Avenge the fallen' coming out in 2024 and the band has never been more popular. This was the classic Hammerfall line-up of: Joacim Cans (vocals), Oscar Dronjak & Stefan Elmgren (guitars), Magnus Rosen (bass) and Anders Johansson (drums)... The band recorded the live DVD/ CD on this tour - 'One Crimson Night' in 2003. Hammerfall debuted in 1997 w/ the album 'Glory to the brave'... in a time when classic heavy metal was considered a "relic of the 80's"... a time when Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Saxon, Motorhead, Skid Row, etc. were playing clubs and struggling to sell records and concert tickets on tour. Hammerfall's line-up solidified in 1998 w/ the 2nd album 'Legacy of kings' (w/ Cans, Dronjak, Elmgren, Rosen and drummer Patrick Rafling) and 3rd album 'Renegade' was released in 2000 w/ Anders Johansson (drums) joining Hammerfall. 4th album 'Crimson Thunder' in 2002 w/ live album 'One Crimson Night' in 2003, was followed up w/ 5th studio album 'Chapter V: Unbent, unbowed, unbroken' in 2005... and 6th album 'Threshold' in 2006... Both bassist Magnus Rosen and guitarist Stefan Elmgren left the band soon after. Pontus Norgren (guitar) joined Hammerfall in 2008... Fredrik Larsson (bass) rejoined the band from their early days... They recorded 7th album 'No sacrifice, no Victory' in 2009 and followed by 8th album 'Infected' in 2011. Subsequent Hammerfall releases have been fairly successful as the band toured globally. Their 2022 album 'Hammer of dawn' was their 12th studio offering... Drummer Anders Johansson left the band in the 2010's and was eventually replaced by David Wallin (drums)

I saw these guys headline a club in Belgium in '98. I've never heard of them, but I got a free ticket and went. It was so beautifully cheesy!! Most of the crowd seemed to know all the words, and when to raise their hands at the same time, and it seemed every other song had a "whoa oh oh oh" section for the crowd to sing along to. I guess it was kinda like what it must be like to see Babymetal in Japan.lol Then I saw them at home, here in Vancouver (Canada) in about '05 in a much larger club. It was not the same experience. The crowd was not in sync like that European show. Not even close.

Buckethead did one of the power rangers theme songs, which makes perfect sense if you think about it

For years there's been a false belief that Buckethead wrote and performed the title song for Power Rangers. I think they did actually do a cover at one point, but they did not actually write or perform the song used in the show.

Sad fact. HAMMERFALL frontman Joacim Cans was assaulted with a beer glass at a bar in the group's hometown of Gotheburg Sweden on Saturday, August 10th 2002 and ended up with a cut around his left eye that required 25 stitches to close. Apparently the assailant didn't like Hammerfalls music. So Joacim has literally bled for metal
