Such a gift to music, and he found the perfect singers to pair with in Meatloaf and Bonnie Tyler. For years I'd been puzzled over why I like No Matter What by Boyzone so much, and it turns out Steinman wrote it 😂

One of the greatest albums of all time. Several of the songs were meant to be used in a rock opera being created by Jim Steinman. Every track on this album is great. The song is actually about a motorcycle crash, according to Jim Steinman (the genius who wrote it). Jim wanted it to depict the ultimate crash, to the point where the rider's heart bursts out of his chest, and he sees it beating before he dies. "I'll be gone when the morning comes" refers to him leaving his lover and his inevitable death.

The unknowing prophecy the character singing gives, that by the crack of dawn he'd be gone... Listen to the lyrics, and he has a motorcycle crash and is dying as the sun comes up. Repeated lyric that starts the motorcycle crash. "And I never see the sudden curve until it's way too late!" at about 13:35 in the video. He wasn't riding off at the end of the song, he was DYING!

Huge Meatloaf fan here. Meatloaf considered himself an actor. That was his calling. When he sang, he became a character, like method actors do. Each song, he became a new character. That is why he is so theatrical. I believe he liked the term “Wagnerian Rock” as his music was very operatic. He got his powerful voice from his mother who was a gospel singer in Texas. She died young, his alcoholic dad tried to kill him and he hitched his way to LA with his guitar. Met Jim Steinman doing small plays. Jim was a pianist and wrote the songs and Meatloaf belted them out. They broke up and were never as good alone. They tried to reunite but it was never the same. Bat Out of Hell was the prefect song at the perfect time for them.

Meatloaf probably did play some piano or other instruments, but he only performed and recorded as a vocalist/actor. He didnt write his songs but he worked closely with songwriter Jim Steinman who wrote songs specifically for Meatloaf (and other artists like Bonnie Tyler and Celine Dion). If you listen to "Total Eclipse of The Heart" or "It's All Coming Back to Me" and think they sound like Meatloaf songs, its because they are Jim Steinman songs. Go back and listen to those songs and try to imagine Meatloaf singing them and you'll know exactly what i mean.

This to me is one of the most visual songs ever,It's like Red Barchetta by Rush. I can literally close my eyes and see everything happening in both songs. Every song on this album is Amazing but this is by far my Favorite Meatloaf song ever. Shout out to Jim Steinman for the songwriting and the band as well. Every single person playing on this is a Master of their craft...

Meatloaf and Jim Steinman met doing musical theater in London. Together they had the idea of doing rock as musical theater. Steinman wrote the music and Meatloaf sang it. Steinman played the piano. Their idea was that the band would be Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman. The label said that was stupid, and released it as Meat Loaf with songs by Jim Steinman. Steinman was not amused. I don't think they worked together until the Bad out of Hell 2 album more than a decade letter. Steinman also wrote the great Bonnie Tyler song Total Eclipse of the Heart. They were rather pointedly mining a variety of styles, with the only commonality that all of the songs are dramatic. (The obvious next song for you is "Two out of Three's Not Bad") This song is rooted in songs like Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild" and Springstein's "Born to Run". The other issue is death songs like the Shangri-la's Leader of the Pack and Jan and Dean's "Dead Man's Curve". (The kid's show Veggie Tales, which also did a pastice of music styles also had a send up of these rock death songs.) On the VH1 show dedicated to this album Steinman talks about the motorcycle. He says he went into the studio and complained to Todd Rundgren (who produced the album) that he had been promised a motorcycle. Rundgren picked up a guitar ran his fingers down the frets producing the motorcycle sound and said "Happy?". Rundgren produced this album and XTC's Skylarking two really great albums, but both bands seem to have left the experience hating him. Rundgren made the rock and roll hall of fame a few years back, which I think was one of their better picks because it wasn't for any one thing. He had a modest solo career, he had a band with some popularity, but not enough to get in the Hall, and he produced some great albums, but not enough to go in as a producer. But when you put it all together his contribution is worth inclusion. I do wonder if the album wouldn't be too self-indulgent without Rundgren there adding professionalism to these two young guys trying to be revolutionary.
