Just like Joey Belladonna from Anthrax, Chuck Billy has native American ancestry. There's actually a surprisingly big portion in American Thrash Metal with Hispanic/Latino roots.

Testament lead singer Chuck Billy is native American (So is Joe Belladonna of Anthrax)... He and guitarist Eric Peterson (who is part-Mexican) have led the band since 1986... This was a newer single from 2012. Hailing from Oakland, California in the early 80's... Eric Peterson was a teenager when he formed the band Legacy and they became a part of the San Francisco thrash metal scene which featured Exodus, Death Angel, and Metallica (from 1983)... Steve 'Zetro' Souza was the band's original vocalist and Legacy became a promising young thrash metal band by 1985... Souza was offered to join Exodus (who had been signed already) by 1986 and he left the band... Chuck Billy (vocals) replaced Souza and the band was signed in 1986 to Atlantic records... the band had to legally change the name to Testament in 1987 and released their debut album 'The Legacy' in 1987. Touring extensively in America and Europe, Testament built a huge following w/ the classic line-up of Peterson, Billy, Alex Skolnick (lead guitar), Greg Christian (bass) and Louie Clemente (drums)... They released classic thrash metal albums - 'The new order' (1988)... 'Practice what you preach' (1989)... 'Souls of black' (1990) ...each album selling over 400K each. By 1992, Testament were burnt out from recording & touring... they wanted the success that Metallica got in 1991 and put out a more laid back album 'The Ritual'... it became their biggest seller, but the band imploded on tour... both Alex Skolnick and Louie Clemente left in '93 and had to be replaced. Testament returned in 1994 w/ a heavy album 'Low' w/ James Murphy (lead guitar)... but the record sold less in the 90's 'grunge rock' decade... The band split w/ Atlantic Records and both Murphy and Greg Christian left by 1996. After settling their contractual disputes, Billy and Peterson recorded a new Testament album 'Demonic' in 1997 w/ death metal vocals and session musicians, released on an indie label and it sold poorly... In 1999, they released 'The Gathering' w/ Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo and lead guitarist James Murphy... However, things took a tragic turn by 2001 - Chuck Billy was diagnosed w/ cancer and needed urgent treatment as Testament was put on hiatus... former guitarist James Murphy was also diagnosed w/ cancer and underwent a brain operation. Thankfully, Chuck Billy was able to beat the odds and recover (James Murphy did too) and he took time off before rejoining Testament in 2003 to tour... Soon, offers to reunite the classic Testament brought the line-up of Billy/ Peterson/ Skolnick/ Christian/ Clemente back together to tour in 2005 (Drummer John Tempesta, who played on the 'Low' album was also included)... However, drummer Louie Clemente also left soon after and Paul Bostaph (drums) who played in Slayer, joined for their 2008 comeback album 'The formation of damnation'. Gene Hoglan (drums) joined for the 2012 album 'Dark roots of the Earth'...and Testament saw a huge comeback in terms of popularity and album sales... In 2013, longtime bassist Greg Christian left Testament citing financial disagreements w/ the band; Steve DiGiorgio (bass) joined for the next albums - 'Brotherhood of the snake' (2016) and 'Titans of Creation' (2020)... Gene Hoglan recently announced he had left Testament... Currently, Chuck Billy, Eric Peterson, Alex Skolnick and Steve DiGiorgio are working on a new Testament album w/ new drummer Chris Dovas.

You know your stuff. I heard Return to Serenity on the radio at 17. When Low came out, I loved the sound of many of those songs, Legions, P.C., I personally like James Murphy with them better than Skolnick. Tempesta (not just Low) filled in so many times live over the years, maybe some of the re-mastered or re-recorded stuff in '90s and aughts (?) I heard an interview with Gene Hoglan years ago, he said John Tempesta's style, and if you look at the drum parts he played on Low, and all the other songs he played with them, Hoglan said at the time, Tempesta was such a perfect fit for Testament's music. I haven't kept track of all that stuff over the years, Draw The Line & Sails of Charon I only found out about in more recent years, I haven't looked into the line-ups for everything they recorded (the other than original LP stuff) and live. I used to watch the live performances from Dynamo 2000, songs from Demonic and the Gathering, I believe its Steve Smyth (or Smith) on guitar and Jon Dette on drums, I think there were other times in those years they filled in live, or one a one-off recording. I also love Lombardo with Testament, also a perfect fit. Steve DiGiorgio on bass over Greg Christian is my preference. Good he didn't move on, he's one of those that was in a few bands in the old days. My only gripe is, I'd love to know what kind of sound they'd have all these years with James Murphy instead of Alex. I love Low & The Gathering. I read about James's cancer years ago, he doesn't remember recording The Gathering if I'm not mistaken. Too bad it wasn't him from 1994 on, to me I can hear that difference in the sound on stuff he played on (there was other stuff in the '90s too), he jumped in the comments on one song and wrote that he did or didn't use a slide (I think) in response to other comments he saw 😂.

Testament has been my favorite thrash band since I discovered them, way back from their second album. They deserve to be in the top 4 IMHO, as no other one of the other bands have been as consistent over the years. Trial By Fire, Into The Pit, Over The Wall, Practice What You Preach, Souls Of Black, and from their latest album: Children Of The Next Level, Night Of The Witch, World War III. They seem to be getting better with age!!

@@Easy_Skanking above and beyond his prowess as a musician, Hogan is also a survivor. Throughout the whole rise of new metal and whatnot and you could not give away thrash metal.... Hoag maintained a rehearsal space where he went in day in day out kept his chops in order kept his business mind clear and began to reinvent himself as a session musician this alone provided him with the money to keep his own projects alive while the trending Arrow had their ears holes stuffed up with Limp Biscuit Etc he has survived and come out of the other side of it to where people are paying attention to a genuinely old school and original extreme metal, and he is heralded as the genius idea is for keeping his head on his shoulders and surviving where so many did not.

You guys are one of my favourite channels, and I love your genuineness and charm, so never change that! And I know you two are still learning. And you're always learning, so on the spirit of that I need to tell you that every time you guys bring up Obituary amongst discussion of thrash or the big four, a little piece of me dies inside 😂😂 For future ref, Obituary are typically referred to as a Death Metal band. The Big Four of Thrash you already know and love, and they are solidified as Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax due mostly to album sales, fame and influence. However, many bands are claimed to be the '5th member of the big 4' or some would extend it to a 'Big 8'. Many of those other bands include bands which are older or just as important to the development of thrash, such as Exodus, Testament, Overkill, Death Angel and so on. Notice they're all American bands. However, there's also debate about the Canadian Big 4, usually Annihilator, Voivod, Sacrifice and Razor. Plus, the German Big 4 (also known as Teutonic Thrash) - Kreator, Destruction, Sodom And Tankard. And if you were to head to the UK, it might include Sabbat, Onslaught, Acid Reign and Xentrix. Further to this, I heavily recommend you guys react to a series called 'Metal Evolution' hosted by Sam Dunn and made by Banger Films. I imagine KZbin won't allow it but if you could do this on Patreon it would be amazing as 1) nobody reacts to it and 2) it's the most entertaining AND most educational documentary series about the history of metal and will help you guys get accustomed to the ins and outs of all the styles. Keep up the great work and Merry Christmas!
