The Band cover of Dylan's I Shall Be Released is so powerful as sung by Richard Manuel. The Band had 3 lead singers, all of whom have passed now.

The reason they called themselves the Band was that they were Bob Dylan's band. He'd come out and introduce himself, "My name's Bob Dylan and this is the band." So when they started playing on their own they just kept the name. These guys are huge. Very influential, and they were all musical purists. Everything they did was amazing.

Actually, they were originally signed as “The Crackers” on their original contract as kind of a joke according to Levon Helm. Their first album, Songs from the Big Pink, the record company couldn’t list them as The Crackers and the band was simply listed as “The Band” and it stuck. That’s the story Levon tells.

That's not completely correct. They were originally called the Hawks, and toured & recorded under that name for a time, then evolved into the "band" which is the name they eventually became famous for. By the way, the film this segment was taken from "The last waltz" was directed by Martin Scorsese, and peppered with cameos by stellar artists, including Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and a host of others. You owe it to yourselves to watch the entire film!!

This is what you get when one of the best bands of the 60's and 70's, called The Band, and one of the best Gospel groups of all time, The Staples Singers, come together with a great song to sing. Lead Guitarist and Song Writer Robbie Robertson needed a town name for the first line in the song, looked inside his C.F. Staple Singers, "the BAND"- beautiful music and vocals. The characters in the song - Crazy Chester, Luke, Anna Lee, are based on friends of the band. In Levon Helm's autobiography This Wheel's On Fire: Levon Helm And The Story Of The Band, he explained: "We had two or three tunes, or pieces of tunes, and 'The Weight' was one I would work on. Robbie had that bit about going down to Nazareth - Pennsylvania, where the Martin guitar factory is at. The song was full of our favorite characters. 'Luke' was Jimmy Ray Paulman. 'Young Anna Lee' was Anna Lee Williams from Turkey Scratch. 'Crazy Chester' was a guy we all knew from Fayetteville who came into town on Saturdays wearing a full set of cap guns on his hips and kinda walked around town to help keep the peace,if you follow me. He was like Hopalong Cassidy, and he was a friend of the Hawks. Ronnie would always check with Crazy Chester to make sure there wasn't any trouble around town. And Chester would reassure him that everything was peaceable and not to worry, because he was on the case. Two big cap guns, he wore, plus a toupee! There were also 'Carmen and the Devil', 'Miss Moses' and 'Fanny,' a name that just seemed to fit the picture. (I believe she looked a lot like Caladonia.) We recorded the song maybe four times. We weren't really sure it was going to be on the album, but people really liked it. Rick, Richard, and I would switch the verses around among us, and we all sang the chorus: Put the load right on me!"

The members of The Band were gathered together over a few years by Ronnie Hawkins, and his band were called The Hawks. They started out in the mid to late 50's and toured extensively in Canada. By the mid 60's they left Ronnie Hawkins and started doing some live performances of there own. At this time they didn't really have an exclusive name they used, usually they performed as The Hawks. Word got out Bod Dylan was looking for a backing band for his 66 world tour when he goes electric. Someone in the business suggested Dylan check out The Hawks and as history will prove that worked out well. They started the world tour with Bob Dylan, half way through they took a break from touring, that's when Dylan's infamous motorcycle accident happened. Dylan took a few years off, moved his family to West Saugerties, New York, by Woodstock. The guys of The Band followed because they were still under contract to be Bob Dylan's touring Band and actually still being paid. They moved into a house they would eventually call big pink. During this time Dylan would visit quite often and Robbie would learn quickly from Bob Dylan how to better write and constuct songs. The infamous Bob Dylan's basement tapes were recorded by Garth Hudson in the basement of there house, Big Pink during this period. The Group finally picked a name for themselves The Band because thats what everyone always referred to them as. There Debut album was Music from Big Pink by The Band in1968, and the rest is History!

The Band actually had five lead vocalists, but my personal favorite was the drummer that started singing first. The late great Levon Helm. His vocals on the song “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” are so compelling that they draw you into the lyrics. The Last Waltz is well worth the two hours of concert film by Martin Scorsese, with an incredible roster of legendary guests like The Staples, Eric Clapton, Dr John, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and more. ✌🏼😎

They did not have five lead volalists. To my knowledge, Garth Hudson did not sing altough he was a tremendous musician. Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel were the singers and Robbie's mic was turned off if at all possible. I give him full credit as a song writer and a guitarist, but he wasn't a great singer. The musical talent in this group is the reason they are the only group that can be called THE BAND. However, if you want to see a band that really had five lead singers, look up The Five Man Elecical Band.

The Band was perhaps the greatest rock band ever. That song, The Weight, is in Rolling Stone Magazine's top 20 in their top 500 songs of all time. The Weight was written in 1968 by Robbie Robertson ,with this sublime version combining The Band and the Staple Singers being performed as part of The Last Waltz concert by The Band in 1976 . The song is 54 years old and sounds as fresh and brilliant today ,as when it was first composed in my opinion ! I still get goosebumps at the magical performances to this day ... The Band was a Canadian band, with one American member, Levon Helm ( drummer ) from Arkansas. Most of the lyrics for all their songs were written by Robbie Robertson ( double neck guitar guy ). The third lead in this song is the amazing Roebuck "Pops" Staples. He is in the movie True Stories, starring David Byrne, who is the lead singer for the group Talking Heads. The film also features John Goodman, , Swoosie Kurtz, and Spalding Gray. The movie features many iconic Talking Heads songs, and Pops plays Mr. Tucker, a voodoo witch doctor, and sings my favorite song in the film, Papa Legba. I think you would enjoy the movie as much as I do.

This may be the second best you tube music video. Period. Second only to Stairway to heaven performence by Ann and nancy (and company) at the KCH show. I have heard it a hundred times, and still love it every time. The Staple Singers are an extremely important family in the whole history of American music (much like the Carter family is/was). That is The Staple Singers. The older man is their father Pop Staples. Mavis Staples is the lead singer. I attended The Staple Singer's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is part of The Bands, documentary The Last Waltz. It's a must-see. I love Van Morrison's performance in that doc along with many others. Both artists have impeccable discographies worth exploring.

"The Band" started as such in 1967 but their musical journey individually and together is older. They started as Bob Dylan's "band" and got on Dylan's posters as "The Band" as in Bob Dylan & The Band. Canadians Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, Robbie Robertson and USAnian Levon Helm were all multi-instrumentalists. All except Garth did vocals, solo or together in different combinations. Their genre of music being a rock version of folk, was originally called "rockabilly" but that may have become a pejorative label later on, avoided by fans. The commented on piece "The Weight" is a clip from the farewell movie "The Last Waltz" [1978] that Martin Scorsese did (he does the interviews himself) to the "occasion" of The Band breaking up. This clip here has the song The Weight followed by a brief part of the movie. The movie is a documentary of The Band's history and a testament to their music. The Band was Bob Dylan's back up band for a few years. They were all living in Woodstock, NY. Whenever the guys from Dylan's band was out on the town people would say "they are with The Band, or when one of the guys were out alone, again people would say "he is with The Band", so when they went out on their own and had to pick a name, they decided on The Band, since that what people had been calling them for years. I would say they lived up to their name. The singer singing the Chester verse, is the late great Rick Danko, listen to him sing Stagefright or It makes no difference. Or Richard Manuel singing The Shape I'm in. The guy with the double neck guitar is Robbie Robertson, he wrote most of the songs for The Band.

Just for the record : The Band were the musicians that played for Bob Dylan... Then they played for themselves. In 1976, if memory serves, they decided to retire and have one last show : Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, The Stapples and many more were there... Cherry on on the cake ? This incredible jam was filmed and edited by Martin Scorsese himself under the name "The last waltz". "The Band" and "The Staple Singers" made quite a combo. The Staples were a Gospel/ R&B group in the early 70s. "Papa" Staple, and his daughters, (Lead singer Mavis Staple) were one of the hottest groups in thee 70s. I think they are all dead, except Mavis. This clip, is from the Documentary, "The Last Waltz." Actually this version is a studio version not live. It was recorded during the production of the Album The Last Waltz from the movie of the same name. Some of the members of The Band were pissed off at Robbie for including some acts (Like Niel Diamond which Robbie just happend to be producing an album for at the time) and leaving out others that really had an influence on them like the Staples Singers. They produced a studio version with The Staples Singers that looked like a live performance so it would fit in with the live theam of the Album/Concert. This performance was a collaboration with two different groups. The Staples Singers were a gospel group going back to the 50s or 60s. The Band came out in the late 60s. The Band was more along the line of more folk, blues and country based. Getting their start opening for Bob Dylan. If you dig them, check out Grateful Dead and the Byrds.

@@matthewdrake4385 Yeah Hendrix was marketed solely to a white audience. Just watch any live clips and look at the audience. In fact Hendrix was unhappy with this which inspired him to start the Band of Gypsies. Music was heavily segregated with a Hot Soul Chart( blsck artists) in Billboard. I was born in 66 and certainly was familiar with Hendrix and completely unfamiliar with the Soul and Funk cats( With the exception of some Motown which was designed to crossover to a white audience). I guess we just chose to delve outside of what we grew up with.

You can do about two dozen of The Band’s songs and never miss. Try “Makes No Difference,” “Up on Cripple Creek,” “Long Black Veil,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” . . . Clapton, upon hearing The Band, said he’d heard the pinnacle of music (or words to that effect). SO great.

The Band itself, no pun intended, had three members singing lead parts. The drummer Levon Helm did the most, but pianist Richard Manuel and bassist Rick Danko also sang lead parts. The only member who did not sing was keyboardist Garth Hudson.

The guys playing instruments were one group actually called The Band. The other group off to the side was the Staple Singers, primarily a gospel group consisting of Pop Staples and his three daughters. The rest of the information seems to already have been filled in by other posters.

Hopefully in the year since you posted this you've found the time to look into the movie "The Last Waltz". They had decided to go their separate ways and decided to go out big by inviting every musician they felt had a major influence including Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, and several more. They desperately wanted The Staple Singes included but they were booked elsewhere that day so Martin Scorsese, who directed the documentary, brought them all in to shoot this masterpiece. The Staples were a leading gospel group of that time who eased over into popular music. They consisted of Roebuck (Pops) Staples, his son Pervis (until 1970), and his three daughters Mavis, Cleotha, and Yvonne (after Pervis left in 1970). Check out their releases "Respect Yourself" and "I'll take You There"

The Band is great. They have several hit songs but my favorite is "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." The Staple singers were best known as a gospel group, but they did have a fantastic, soulful song that crossed over into mainstream radio called "I'll Take You There."

I believe all but one member all had songs they were lead singer on. I guess they felt the voice would dictate who sung. They all had great and distinct voices. There is a great back story to these cats 🤘❤️

The drummer, Levon Helm, was the lead singer for The Band. He's worth taking the time looking into his solo career. He also was a natural actor and authored a few books.

Levon was not the lead singer. Those duties were shared pretty equally by Levon, Rick Danko the bass player and keyboard/piano player Richard Manuel. Robbie Robertson the lead guitarist wrote the bulk of the songs with Levon contributing on many as well. They were about as multi talented a group as you could find in the rock world at the time. Each of them was a multi-instrumentalist and very accomplished on whatever they were playing, acoustic or electric.
