I am not Italian, but I had a good buddy I met at one of my first real jobs that is Italian. One December back in the early 2000s he invited me to hang out with his family on New Years Eve at the local chapter of the Italian-Amerians club. I do not consider myself a great looking guy, but I am a fairly nice guy and we had decent jobs. I swear I have never had such a crazy experience in my life. First, the food was amazing. I must have had at least 10 grandmothers brings me over random plates of food to try. I had at least 5 mothers try to set me up on dates with their daughters. I had some of the older men take me to a hotel that was next door to show me that they had a whole hog and steaks on ice in a jacuzzi tub and jugs of home made wine and olive oil. They invited me to come back the next day they were going to prepare the hog for dinner and the steaks were for lunch, but I had volunteered to work New Years day so I couldn't make it. I have never been treated as kind by random strangers as I was by those folks. Especially the grandparents.

Most ive ever done was my friends Jamaican family dinner. I was the only white person there. I don't think they like the meat because every piece of meat was a jerk...... LOL first time ive had goat too. Dont recommend it. But try shredded pineapple in cole slaw. Its addictive.

I been to Native dinners, Dinners with people from El Salvador, but have yet to go to a Black Cookout”. That being said, someone I was friends with years ago, her mother (Thelma) doesn’t ask if you hungry, she tells you that you are hungry. She asks if you want 1 or 2 pork chops, you say one the best polite, you’re likely to get your plate back with 4 or 5… I’ve seen people put blueberries or raisins in coleslaw. I don’t understand it…

Yeah, my family is blindingly white but you don't mess with potato salad by using raisins and nuts! My mom's potato salad is a classic type with potatoes, hardboiled eggs, diced onions and dill pickles, and Best Foods/Hellman's mayo. She adds pickle brine to the mayo along with yellow mustard and some simple seasonings like salt, pepper, etc., so it actually has flavor. It's not gourmet or complex or anything like that, it's just simple and good. I have seen some baked beans-related atrocities, though. One of my aunts likes to add pineapple. It's just... Wrong. But her kids and grandkids seem to love it.

What the hell kind of people put raisins and nuts in Potato Salad???? That literally made my brain stop for a few seconds. My Southern roots knows any of my 3 Grandmothers would've thrown a person from their kitchen for that...... W.O.W!! I had a hard time with deviled eggs sitting in potato salad with paprika all over the top made by a member of my inlaws kingdom hall in St Louis, I did a triple take because it was weird. Oh man I went to my x’s great unties bbq she had the oxtail and the whole spred but my x totally didn’t think of me having diabetes. Luckily his appetite he ate most of my plate but his auntie was like oh hunny u don’t eat. I finally had to break it to her “no auntie I have diabetes “ lmfao she thought I was a vegan or somthing then she got it. But not eating some of the food at anyone’s house is kinda disrespectful so I still tried. Luckily I can drink bourbon so while the boys were playing bones outside her and I danced around and drank bourbon

Cook out, house party, whatever, if you fall asleep, you will wake up with the entire contents of a Sharpie on your face. I went to a house party once, must have been 200 people there and my buddy fell asleep, aka passed out drunk. He woke up and saw it and it wouldn't wash off. But he got the last laugh. He went to the bathroom and found a razor and shaved it off his face. But he did it so violently, because he was drunk, that he bled EVERYWHERE. He got it on the towels, the shower curtain, the walls, the door, it looked like Hannibal Lechter came to this party by the time he was done in that bathroom.

Growing up I went to a lot of black BBQs and even though I'm not white, I am white complected. I always found it weird that this was such a stigma. Why people spend so much time on racial differences has always been confusing to me too. I grew up with a black best friend and there was nothing weird about it. Not until I got older and everyone started tripping over "rAcE". I guess I just grew up differently. But here where I grew up it never seemed like an issue. And I grew up in Texas.

I have been to white and black cookouts and bbq's and they were about the same. The craziest one was when I was 22 and dating this Spanish chick, that party was insane, it was like an appetizer then eight main courses then three desserts. I went into it thinking ok some good food, some beers, some dancing I am not capable of but I can act my way through it, then get laid and go home. Then I wake up laying the wrong way on this bed, missed call from my sister and my work, stumble to the bathroom then waddle out where lunch is ready trying to axct ok. Those were the days.
