I think Jay-Z understands that Hip Hop is a young person game. So since he retired in 2003 The Black Album was his last album that had banging singles with the only exception being The Blueprint 3. He doesn’t need to follow trends or even try to make chart topping singles his name will carry his music. 4:44 is the perfect example of this. It's messed up that fans allow and welcome those like Jay-Z, Kanye, and Wayne to evolve as artists and show massive love .....however Eminem is dammed if he does and dammed if he doesn't. Thankfully Eminem is obviously an extraterrestrial from a planet that can only communicate in strait bars.

That’s because Jay is better at adapting with the times than Eminem ever has been. Jay picked better beats and even wrote better songs. Neither artist is making music as good as they did in their prime, but Jay at least occasionally made songs that were listenable and Eminem’ over the last decade has been making boring Call of Duty soundtrack music.
