I have fond memories of this game, I only had the shareware version, son I played the Bravo sector in a loop. I discovered years later that there were so much more weapon to use and two more sectors! Lasers turrets seems powerful, but only target in the air...

Forgive my ignorance, but how does one speedrun this game, except for rushing through the menus and beating the bosses asap? I mean 98% of the gameplay is an autoscroller.

Yeah, 98% of gameplay is autoscroller, the only way to get faster is to have better shop strategy and killing bosses faster. This is not a perfect run tbh.

@Tribies actually this run is Auto-pilot category. There are another categories to finish certain sectors. The most strange thing about this game is when you play Auto-pilot and finish first sector, then difficulty increases for next sector.

Considering the nature of this game, speedruns are obviously awkward. But you CAN do things to make the speedrun faster. E.G. once you have the Twin Laser and 5 Phase Shields, you can go pacifist from there and prioritise dodging enemies and beating the final boss, since taking damage results in time loss from buying new Phase Shields. Only save enough to buy any Phase Shields you still need to speedrun each final boss. Fun fact: Even flying Halfway Bosses will disappear down the bottom of the screen over time, so they're not mandatory to beat.
