The Bible Teaches A Resurrection Not A Secret Rapture: According to Bible history the “rapture doctrine”was taught as a new revelation in the 1830s by John Nelson Darby, a leader of the Plymouth Brethren movement. Darby was told about a dream or vision a young girl had and he was convinced it was God showing him a new revelation of scripture through her dream. The rapture according to church records was never taught by the 1st century early church forward, until Darby's teaching began in the 1830s. The doctrine would later become known as Dispensationalism". Darby taught that Jesus would actually return two separate times. The first being on a cloud to take Christian's to heaven delivering them from seven years of tribulation and, and finally to come back to earth to set up his Kingdom bringing with him those "raptured" earlier to escape tribulation. Darby taught that Old Testament prophecies applied only to Natural Israel, the earthly people of God and not a spiritual Israel. He expected a literal fulfillment of God’s promises to literal Israel. Darby believed, God would first need to remove the church from the world. This belief brought about the need for the "rapture doctrine". Darby’s views spread rapidly, especially in the United States within the Evangelical community of believers. The doctrine was disseminated through prophecy conferences and received support from evangelists like D. L. Moody and Billy Sunday. By far the most important support for Darby’s teaching came from the Scofield Bible and became the English standard for fundamentalist Bible-believing Christians in the early 20th century, and in the process exposed thousands of readers to the false rapture doctrine through his dispensational-informed study notes. The doctrine” continued to gain steam in the latter half of the 20th century, and the advent of modern Israel in 1948 seemed a clear sign that God was restarting his plans for Israel. Books like The Late Great Planet Earth, and movies like A Thief in the Night further popularized dispensational teaching. And then there are the Left Behind novels, which sold millions of copies and captured the imagination of a new generation. In just a century and a half, a previously unknown doctrine never taught by the early church fathers has become a central eschatological hope for millions. Truth of Scripture Over Church History: We must ultimately assess doctrine not on the narrative of church history, but on the text of Scripture. As Protestants we hold Scripture, not church tradition, to be authoritative and the rapture teaching, faces many biblical challenges. There are no biblical texts explicitly teaching two separate advents of Christ separated by seven years in Heaven while the rest of the world suffers tribulation. Passages often used to describe the rapture teaching are (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17), and (1 Corinthians 15:51-55), however these scriptures are referring the glorious “resurrection”, of the Saints of God, Daniel 12:2, and will be a day of wrath for those who loved sin over righteousness. At Jesus’ second coming Christians will take on a glorified body like Jesus had at his Resurrection and in Heaven now. There will be nothing secret about the coming of the Lord.(Rev. 1:7). In fact this is what has been taught throughout the early church until Darby got this new revelation through a child’s dream, and then bringing forth to millions of evangelical believers the new doctrine of a rapture, though the scriptures the word rapture is nowhere to be found or even the concept of Jesus coming secretly taking the Saints to Heaven for seven years to escape a great tribulation. To believe this doctrine as I did for most of my Christian life, you have to impose this upon the scriptures by manipulating verses to fit the newly created doctrine. For example, the New Testament repeatedly warns that Jesus will return “like a thief” (Matthew 24), 1 Thessalonians 5, many read this as describing the secret rapture. However, in each of these passages the context seems to indicate the coming in question is Christ’s public, triumphant return in glory. And then there’s Jesus’ warning that “two men will be in the field, one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken, the other left” Matt 24:40-41, as it was in the days of Noah, who were the ones taken away by the flood, the sinners, the unbelievers, all taken in judgment not to Heaven, but taken in judgement by the flood. 1 Thessalonians, 4:16‐17, which says: “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, and with the voice of the archangel and with the trump of God and the dead in Christ will rise first; then we which are alive and remain, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so shall we ever be with the Lord”, this speaks of the bodily alive and dead at his coming being changed from mortal to immortal and taking on our eternal bodies a body like unto Christs glorified body at his resurrection. In Luke 17:34‐37 we see a similar comparison: “I tell you, on that night there will be two people in one bed; one will be taken, the other left, there will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken, the other left.” They said to Jesus in reply, taken where, Lord?” When we read these verses in their full context - we see that those who are “left behind” are the saints of God and those taken are the sinners who are taken in judgment. As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of man and they did not know until the flood came and “swept them all away” meaning they met their (judgement), so will the coming of the Son of man be. We see here that the ones being “taken away” are being taken away to judgment not Heaven. Jesus tells the Apostles in Luke 17:37, “where the body is, there also the vultures will gather.” Does that sound like Heaven to you? Throughout the history of the world, man has never been satisfied with what God has taught and has instead tried to find his own way. But again, the “coming” of Jesus to take people Matthew (24:39) has already been identified as his coming in glory in the immediate context Matthew 24:30-31) without any clear textual indication that two second comings will take place. Further, the Old Testament analogy of Noah and the flood suggests that those “taken” are actually the ones swept away in judgment Matthew (24:39)! The myths and fairy tales started by John Nelson Darby and proliferated by his adherents has catapulted the world into complete confusion regarding Eschatology and End Time prophecy. Yet, the answers have been right there in the Bible all along to seek out and find. Pray for understanding and wisdom and the Holy Spirit will reveal the hidden secrets of scripture to all who ask in faith believing. Matthew 24:2, Jesus’s Olivet discourse was completely fulfilled at the hands of Roman Emperor Titus and his army in 70 AD, as he destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple was desecrated and burned. There is a lot of biblical information which aligns with what the scriptures teach on the 2nd coming of Christ and a secret rapture is not supported by the word of God. The rapture doctrine teaches Christians will be delivered from all tribulation and suffering but this is folly to think we won’t be tried and tested similar to how the Apostles were tested. all one has to do is a Google search online and you will find how the Apostles suffered greatly for the faith and experienced horrendous deaths in the end PF their lives and were not delivered out of their trials and sufferings until their deaths. 1 Peter 4:1,KJB, says this concerning suffering, "Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind, for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin”. Amen. There will be nothing secret about Christ’s second coming it will be a great and glorious day for believers and a terrible day for the wicked, and all who love evil and hate righteousness. Revelation 1:7, KJB says, “Behold, he cometh with clouds; and (every eye shall see him), and they which pierced him; and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him”. Even so, Come Lord Jesus, Amen.
