@Trixie K She wasn't a great dramatic actress, but she was funny if given the right role. I thought she was hilarious in Bedazzled and very funny in Blue Beard. I never saw the Three Musketeers, but I understand she was funny there too. It's a shame that her first real starring role was in Myra Breckinridge that was such a disappointment, not through any fault of her own, but because of the makers of that film that just made a mess of it.

Too funny that practically everyone who wasn't basically a singer were dubbed before Sophia Loren sang in her own voice in MAN OF LA MANCHA in 1972. The other greats Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Natalie Wood could not sing in their own musicals thanks to this Hollywood tradition - excepting perhaps Marilyn Monroe who got some help in parts by Marni Nixon. It wasn't so much that Raquel and those greats couldn't carry a tune but that the studio execs felt that their voices weren't good enough. Anyhow, when Raquel went independent she proved she could sing in her subsequent TV specials ("Miss Welch's voice by Raquel Welch," says the credits of her 1974 TV special, REALLY RAQUEL.) Long story short, in 1981, she took the title role in the Broadway musical WOMAN OF THE YEAR and got positive reviews. She had "a showgirl's way with a song," reported LIFE MAGAZINE in July 1982. Rest in peace Raquel, even in death your critics remain unkind.
