Buick traditionally occupied the enviable position of prestigious, well-equipped, mid-to-upper-level cars within the General Motors Division hierarchy. The Century has served as Buick’s performance car since its 1937 introduction. After a hiatus following World War II, the Buick Century nameplate returned in 1954 using the lighter and smaller Buick Special body and chassis with the larger and more powerful Buick engines-the 322 cubic-inch V8 paired with a Dynaflow automatic transmission.
Buick continued that theme for the second-generation Century produced between 1954 and 1958. For 1957, Buick engineers enlarged their "Fireball" V8 to 364 cubic inches producing an even 300 gross horsepower. Buick would idle the Century name after the 1958 model year by replacing it with the Invicta line for 1958. The Century brand name would not return to the Buick lineup until the 1973 launch as one of it's "Colonnade" mid-size A-Body based offerings.
Buick produced the Century in two-door, four-door, convertible, and wagon variants. Pillarless hardtop versions were sub-branded with “Riviera.” For example, the Buick Century featured for sale here is a Model 63 Riviera Sedan. Interestingly, the Riviera Sedan, with 15,171 units produced, represented roughly six percent of Buick’s production that year.
