Of the 1000 El Camino SS L78 375hp cars produced in 1969, only 165 were equipped with the TH400 heavy duty transmission. The 396/L78 option included solid lifter 4-bolt main engine with all forged rotating assembly, high flow large valves, square port heads, high compression pistons and high lift cam. This #’s matching El Camino SS has the factory correct Winters (Snowflake) high-rise aluminum intake manifold, with Holley Dual Feed 780 CFM carb. Previous owner removed the engine & transmission, then rebuilt both as follows:
Torque Plate Cylinder Honing, New Forged Pistons, New Solid Lifters, New Stainless Valves & HP Springs, New Cam & Competition Valve Job on Sunnen head machine. New timing set, and crankshaft was rebalanced down to less than 1 gram on a digital balancer. The car’s VIN is present on both the engine & transmission. Rear end is KK date coded correct casting number as a 12 bolt - Posi. This info decodes to (4:10:1) 12- bolt Posi-traction L78/396. The El Camino currently rides on a set of period correct 14 in. Cragar S/S wheels & radial tires with about 75% tread life remaining. Original set of bias-ply tires & YA code GM wheels come with the car. This unique El Camino SS comes with other desirable options including tinted window glass, tilt-wheel, F41 special heavy duty suspension with boxed control arms, PS/PB and more! Paint is rated 7.5 out of 10, & was repainted within the last 10 years. There are a few blemishes, but no rust spots due to being in Arizona for many years. Chrome & stainless steel trim appear to be original. All glass & window moldings are factory original & in good condition. Door gaps are perfect and open/close as they should. The El Camino SS appears to have all the original body panels, floors, & bed. This car was built/assembled at the GM Kansas City plant in the 3rd week of July 1969 and delivered to a small town Chevrolet dealer in Illinois - (see dealer invoice). It was then sold to the next owner where It spent much of its life in Arizona.
It's a blast to drive. Pump the gas twice & she fires right up. There are no leaks, smoke, or strange noises when the car is idling or driving. Steering is tight and straight, & the factory front disc brakes stop the car with minimal pedal. Doug Thorley headers & turbo mufflers give the El Camino an awesome sound & great performance.
She’s not a highway cruiser with the 4:10 rear, but plenty of torque that will push you back into the seat when you step on it.
