It's so cool to see an interview with Malcolm so close to the time of A Clockwork Orange. He still looks like Alexander DeLarge, the hair is exactly the same, and with his facial expressions, especially the smirk, you can see Little Alex come to life.

Maybe he nailed the role because he was really like the character himself.

In my opinion the Mick Travis trilogy McDowell did of 'If' (1968), 'O Lucky Man' (1973) and 'Britannia Hospital' (1982) are masterpieces.

McDowell had few films that used him fully as an actor - the Lindsay Anderson films, Clockwork, Time After Time - and Cat People taps his power but doesn't do enough with it - his description of Kubrick is fascinating - like someone internally at war with both chaos and order - like his own life is consumed by chaos, which he tries to overwhelm w a labyrinthian order - and his own film-making spontaneity leads to films that intentionally smother all spontaneity - framing everything in an intentionally trapped sense of order

bit of a bitter Malcolm McDowell I think. I think Malcolm thought he and Kubrick were actual friends, but once the film was over and he realized Kubrick wasn't going to maintain any sort of relationship he was a bit gutted
