It's not a car. I move Heavy awkward items almost Everyday. Most of the LARGE HEAVY objects are not really supposed to be Moved. Adding to the Difficulty. WE move these objects with Heavy Equipment such as specialized Trucks, Forklifts and Cranes along with SKILLED OPERATORS AND SKILLED GROUND CREWS that prepare and Move the Items SAFELY as a Team. Guess what?? Specialized Crews and Equipment COST MONEY and aren't CHEAP. You hire One guy with a Rachet strap a pallet and a Flatbed to move your Heavy Awkwardly Balanced irreplaceable item. Should come as NO SURPRISE This is what will happen. And you are LuCKY if Nobody Gets injured or WORST

That's totally the wrong way to move that press. He should have rented a small forklift to place it on a pallet secure it. Even a hoist could have been used to lift it. But dipping it on its side and dropping it is not an option. Hire a professional mover that's experienced in heavy machinery. One man with a jack is not going to work.

Basically you can't charge or claim 8k in damages on a 4k item. She's gonna be lucky to get 200.00 in small claims court. Also she could have parts made pretty easily IF she was smart about sourcing them. Also her problems started by NOT hiring a moving company and instead hired a tow company who probably saved her 1k on the move BUT cost her in the long run.

If you love that machine, you don't hire a towing company. You either pack it yourself or hire a specialist.

A towing company to move that, she is crazy! She needed a rigging company & possibly a millwright. But I bet that would have cost more than the machine! His insurance would not cover that!

Tow company is not the right kind of company to call. But they accepted the work, so are liable. And people arguing $4k vs $8k. The worth of the press isn't how much she paid for it. It's how much it costs to replace. If the tow truck company doesn't have insurance, then sue them in small claims. Varies by county what the max you can sue, but likely she can sue for the whole $8k.

You need a hoist or a forklift to move something like that properly. Even a pump trunk with it on a skid would've been a better idea.

Even if you hire a moving company, you need to watch out. I hired a "Fully insured" moving company a couple years ago to move a bunch of machines for me to a new address. They tell you they are insured, but you don't get to see the fine print until they are at your door.. Turns out, the insurance pays 30 cents per pound. Do the match on what happens when they broke a $2,000 machine that weighs about 400 pounds. You bet I was upset. Always as for their insurance up front and a COI that has you as additionally insured if they can provide that.

feel bad for the lady, it's a bad judgment by the tow truck driver, we move cars, we get different stuff sometimes, we accept only if it's from business to business, mean you load and unload, we secure the load on the truck, but everything is clear before the deal, know you limits and capabilities. some drivers also underestimate how heavy some of these machines are. sometimes you need to learn from your mistakes, small repair, pay out of pocket, expensive then pay the deductible and file insurance claim and move on.

Machinery requires RIGGERS to move professionally if the owners is the helpless sort. (I move my own by bolting to castered steel frames I fabbed for the purpose so nothing I move can tip over but that's mostly a machinist or fabricator thing though more people could safely do it with a little study.) Some wrecker operators can rig items like machinery but those are experienced or studious like I was. Not every operator will understand machinery moves beyond the simplest kind and securing machinery is a little different than securing vehicle casualties. If you own complex or top-heavy (milling machines, lathes, brakes, presses) machinery you must hire someone to move do a little homework first so you have a reasonable idea what they should be doing. Accidents hurt people not just hardware.

chances are she will not get the $8000 to repair it. she will get $4000 as that is what her damages are. When repairs cost more than the value of the item, then damages are usually capped at the value. that's why insurance companies total out cars instead of paying more than they are worth to fix. Maybe she could claim lost revenue, but since she hadn't even started using it yet, that will be difficult to prove in court.

Should have never used anyone other than a professional mover. Towing a car is nothing like the skills needed to move heavy equipment or furniture. The fact he has that little pallet said everything to me. Should have been much heavier made and extend past the dimensions of the object being moved.

This woman's work is very specialized and requires special tools she knows it. But unfortunately, she didn't know that a tow company is also specialized and has special tools... They tow things, as in "pull them along" (ask Merriam). Their tools are made for that purpose. However... A MOVING company (also specializedl) can move large awkward things like a piano or even a printing press because they have the experience and the tools. Moving companies also carry insurance for accidents when moving items. I feel bad she didn't know the difference, but she does now. You wouldn't hire a gardener to photograph your wedding and definitely wouldn't want a photographer mowing your lawn!

I have to disagree with the comment below saying: You got what you pay for. I move half million dollar CT imagers. I use tow trucks to do it most of the time. I do say what I am trying to do and schedule long before the move so I get a veteran tow truck driver.

I hope she can get it fixed and moved. I hope they still make parts for that old machine? But, why hire a tow company? Why not a moving company? A moving company have experience in moving very heavy, expensive and large objects. I hope she can get all this resolved.

Hire a welder to come weld the pieces together. Hiring a towing company to move that, is like hiring a towing company to move and box the contents of your house. Why would you do it?

Honestly this is just silly this is what small claims court is for. At this point all she needs to do is file it when they fail to show up to court they'll get an automatic payment in her favor.

Would have been better to higher a piano mover. Tow trucks are for cars . . . A printing press is not a car. Tia Towing should have gone "We do not know what we are doing, so we are not doing it" and turned down the job.
