It was my father's car in 1973. I was the one who suggested him to buy it and I am really proud for that. It was a fantastic car full of technical and stylistic innovations, it seemed like it came from the future. It still is in my heart after almost fifthy years. And my dad too.

I knew nothing about Citroen cars, until I rented one and was blown away by how innovative and DIFFERENT the engineering was. Citroen is hugely underappreciated brand in US . The amount of innovation that came out of their design shops is unrivaled. Even today Citroen makes cars that look and work like nothing else on the market. Amazing commitment to engineering instead of copy-catting like almost every other car company.

If you go back to the 1920s & 30s the French led the world with exceptional cars including the most exotic and luxurious - Bugatti, Delahaye, Voisin, Delage, Panhard, Talbot, Renault, Peugeot. Citroen led the way with mass production in Europe 1919, Traction Avant 1934 - front wheel drive, monocoque chassis, tortion bar suspension; 2CV in 1948, totally French Vive La Difference, produced for 42 yrs; the exceptional DS in 1955 which was 20 years ahead of its time (except the motor), CX, GS Birotor and SM... and lastly the magnificent C6. Like a SM crossed with a CX and a touch of the art deco. Not forgetting the first powered vehicle - Cugnot Steamer in 1769!!!

hey guys,let me say ,when American Gm was building what? carbed Camaros or TransAM,Citroen was able, since 1969, to put Hydro-pneumatic suspensions,hydraulic assisted clutch,self leveling and self turning headlights,electronic fuel injection,and ,in the SM model a gorgeous 6 cylders 2.6 liter made in Italy by Maserati...still today people in this video is amazed by the space technology inspired by this car

later they build in a 3 liter Maserati engine, which was even better.

@3dvorator you forgott the variable assistance steering "DIRAVI" (indexed on speed)...And the Maserati engine was alas not the best part from the SM: he's extreme fragility was the cause from the commercial fiasco from the SM: the sales goes down curent 1972, and the add from the electronic injection (they forgott the ignition...) and the 3L version for the USA, does change nothing...

L' ancien char du grand Robert ? Tabarnak !

thefrench are not known for making great cars? Citroen has produced countless mazing vehicles, there's bugatti, delahaye, etc... Even a 2cv was superior, in price, running cost and ride quality to its competitors... And until bmw recently built a prototype , the 2cv (stock) was the highest altitude car... Almost space-worthy like everyother citroen out there.

It's the origin europe edition, sold in France + Germany. Germans needed an extra permission for having the numberplate behind glass (reflects radar pics!) and white bulbs (were yellow in France), but did not change the nose. The US headlamps were just ugly and spoiled the whole design.

I remember reading about Citroen when the cars were new. Some points I recall, the steering, two turns lock to lock. The brakes, the severity was not how hard you pushed down on the pedal but how far you pushed. The suspension, hydraulic. Flat tire? No problem, turn the appropriate valve on the dash. The tire rises up, take off the flat. No jack necessary.

They were performance optional wheels at the time (to add a bit more "weirdness" to that car, they were not alloy but resin.)
@leneanderthalien5 жыл бұрын
hey are Michelin "RR" wheels (RR= résine renforcée (reinforced resin): was optional wheels, sale size 1972, was tested during the 1971 rallye du Maroc (won from a SM).This wheels are made in fiberglass/epoxy resin, was very lightweight but far stronger as the steel wheels. But they livetime was not so good: the included steel reinforcment (around fixing screws) loose with the time from rust because the composite became microcracks and allow the water penetration...but this problem was known from Georges Regembeau, one of the best SM specialist, and they did lauch aluminium alloy RR wheel reproductions, inclusive bigger diameter to allow the use from modern tires (70 type specific Michelin remanufactured tires are extremly expansive)...This aluminium RR are sale by"SM2a Gallet", Regembeau's son, and some SM club 's trough the SM club de France...
