Rare Australian 10 cent coins
=============================
What can you say about the Aussie 10 cent coin?
It’s consistent. It’s reliable. It never changes.
When other coins are celebrating special occasions and historic events, the 10 cent never gets to join the party.
But that all changed in 2016. For the first time ever, ALL of the the circulated coins scored a special design!
Special Designs
---------------
In 2016, the Mint celebrated 50 years of Decimal coins, and ALL of the coins had a special design on the Heads side that year.
Normally the special designs are reserved for the tails side, so that was unusual in itself.
But for the 10 cent coin this was particularly unusual, cause it was the first time EVER that there was a change to the design of the circulated coin.
It’s a good one to put aside if you find it in your change. Just remember to check the heads side of your 10 cent coins!
By the way there were still ten cent coins with the normal Heads side released in 2016.
Rare Years
----------
The Mint produces a different quantity of ten cent coins every year, and so the coins from some years are rarer than others. There can be up to around 160 million ten coins released in any given year.
In contrast, there are a handful of years where very few ten cents were produced.
Remember - this is about which coins are rare. There are NO guarantees that a coin is valuable just because it’s rare. This is just a guide of which rare coins you may come across in your change.
So here are the years where there were less than 10 million ten cent coins put into circulation:
- 1985 (2 million)
- 1991 (4.8 million)
- 1997 (5.7 million)
- 2011 - this is the rarest so far (1.7 million)
Now it takes a year or 2 for the Mint to release the mintage for each year’s coins, so if you find nice copies of this year’s coins it may be worth putting a few aside just in case they’re rare - you can confirm the quantities on the Mint’s website in a year or 2 after they’ve finalised their numbers.
Non-circulated years
--------------------
While there are some years with a low number of coins put into circulation, there are also a few years where there were NO ten cent coins put into circulation.
The only ten cent coins that were minted these years were released in the sealed mint packs.
So this means that if you find any ten cent coins from these years in your change, they probably came from these sealed packs and they are Super rare. Now’ I’ll warn you, it’s like looking for hens teeth - it’s unlikely you’ll find them.
But hey - if you do find one in your change, you’ll know to put it aside!
These years are:
1986
1987
1995
1996
Errors
------
Now, this doesn’t include coin errors. Like all coins, there are ten cent coins released with errors. There aren’t any drastically rare ten cent coin errors, but if you’re collecting coins with errors, the ten cent coins do have their share.
Summary
------
So in summary, there are 3 groups of ten cent coins to keep an eye out for:
The 2016 with the special Heads side celebrating 50 year of decimal currency.
The 4 years with less than 10 million coins minted:
1985
1991
1997
2011
And then the years where no ten cent coins were actually released into circulation:
1986
1987
1995
1996
This list may grow over time, but for now this is a guide of coins to keep an eye out for in your change.
Happy Hunting
