This is the grandfather of all latin music from the caribbean. Without it,all the popular latin styles would not exist,everything from Mambo to Reggaeton!Cuba is ground zero of latin /afro-caribbean music. Respect is due. Changui is not so rare,but videos of its performance certainly are! So,thank you for sharing it,its a joy to see!

Lowfat80 speaks the truth he would know more than many since he is a perserver of Afro Latino musical folklore. But truthfully I as a Boricua have observed that Hatians have had there hand in the majority of Afro Caribbean Latino music. With Bomba from Puerto Rico west coast like yuba from Mayaguez, Dominican palo and Cuban Changui Haiti has had a strong influence in the development of our music.

Actually, not real Afro-Cuban music, just Cuban music. Afro-Cuban music refers to a group of genres both religious like Yoruba music, Abakua and Palo Monte among others and popular genres as Guaguancó, Columbia or Rumba. There is no guitar, marimbula, tres etc... just percussion and choirs, mostly sang on original African language and a mix of Spanish. The Afro in Afro-Cuban is very very Afro, and very very Cuban, as all this genres where born on the island from our African roots.

Anyone saying the bongo player is not right is just an ignorant cause the music we call salsa comes from this music anybody that have read a good book about the history of salsa will understand so well that only we can show respect for everything and every single note this band plays in this video cause bongo playing in changui is diferent and they in couple different ways but also when this bongo man plays his ("floreos") little solo phrases they are all ok and nice!!!

I had a CD with these recordings at one time when I lived in Seattle. I lended my CD to my friend Steve, who moved back to Chicago. I moved to Las Vegas. I have not been able to locate another copy! The CD was great. Was it you, 2amuse? The sleeve said it was recorded on DAT on a rooftop in Cuba. Loved it!

It's called a marimbula, and is used in Changui as well as in the Domincan Republic (traditional merengue), Jamica (mento), Haiti and Colombia. Basically it's an overgrown descendant of the African kalimba ("thumb piano").

Yellowalicat those are called bongo del monte and are the traditional changui bongo, they are played differently than regular son bongo. They are also tunned lower and are bigger. Tumbadora is the real name for conga drums (not related to bongo). Not trying to school you or anything, just some friendly correction on my part. Peace

The Changui has nothing to do with merengue,which was originaly from Puerto Rico! However,el Son de la Ma Teora,XVI Century,Per haps,the first was played by the"Dominicas" sisters Teodora And Micaela Gines!Ask some cuban about it and some refuse to accept it ,that these sisters from Hispanola(La Espanola-now Santo Domingo)were the first Soneras!

bongo in Salsa comes from bongo in Son and not from the bongo of Changui but Salsa bands have used many songs from Changui music to adapt them in Salsa like Ray Barreto did with "Pastorita", for example, one his most popular songs ever. the problem is with the new generation of Latino taking on from it is now and not researching enough the roots of that music they love and many call Salsa by mistake and cause of political circunstances that forced to be the way it is now..."Salsa" hm

The video has nothing to do with politics JDSWriter, I don't see anybody here speaking of hating Cuba, but since u touched the subject how about u letting the will of the mayorities of cubans preveal (cubans from the island), those are the only once that can make the difference, if things haven't change there is because that majority don't want the change u are wishing for. They are obvouisly way happier than u despite u living in "freedom", the video and your comment are evidence of that.

Ya me he enterado que se llama Marímbula, y que entró en Cuba por Oriente desde Puerto Rico.
@zeidycanetti15366 жыл бұрын
