According to the operation plan, the 1st Belorussian Front was to strike the main blow with the forces of five combined-arms and two tank armies from the Kustrine bridgehead in the direction of Berlin by the shortest route through the town of Seelow. The heights were defended by units of the German 9th Army and the 56th Tank Corps. Only by the morning of April 18, Zhukov's troops, supported by the air forces of the 16th and 18th air armies, seized the Seelow heights at great cost. Berlin was still 30 kilometers away.
