A newly discovered comet, C2020 X3, was photographed flying past the sun during a solar eclipse witnessed by Chile and Argentina. The comet was first spotted by Thai space enthusiast Worachate Boonplod, who was part of NASA's Sungrazer Project. C2020 X3 belongs to the Kreutz sungrazer group, comets that originated from a massive parent comet that broke apart over a thousand years ago. The comet, about 50 feet in diameter, was traveling at an astounding 450,000 miles per hour and came within 2.7 million miles of the sun's surface before disintegrating due to intense solar radiation. The discovery was captured by the SOHO space observatory, known for spotting comets during solar eclipses. While no comet has ever been confirmed to strike the sun's surface, the Kreutz sungrazers continue to fascinate astronomers with their close encounters with the sun.
