Yes, but there was color TV for the rich. It started in 1949, when CBS (not NBC) broadcasted special events and major sports in color. Only the rich folks knew this. Only they could watch NY's ball drop in color.

Back then televisions were measured from a top corner to a bottom corner on the other side. So not as large as you would think.

Neither did NBC. He was starring on a bi-weekly variety show at the time he had his affair with Liz. They exercised the "morals clause" in his contract, and cancelled him in March 1959.
