Wally Conran, the man often credited with "inventing" the Labradoodle, has gone on record saying that he completely regrets introducing the mixed breed to the public. He had a client who wanted to get a seeing eye dog, but she was allergic to most dogs and was interested in finding out if they could breed a dog that didn't trigger her allergies. He bred a poodle with a Labrador kind of as a Hail Mary. They sent fur/dander samples of the puppies to her for allergy testing, and SOME of the littermates were deemed hypoallergic. One of those puppies was then trained to become her service dog. Conran initially wanted to get the Labradoodle officially recognized as a breed so that, with the proper testing and healthy breeding practices, more people with allergies (or that live with people with allergies) could have access to service dogs. He did not anticipate how far the narrative would spin out of control. What started as an earnest attempt to help people with disabilities snowballed into irresponsible breeders Frankensteining dog breeds together with no regard for anyone's health, people's or dogs'.

My family bred Border Collies for years. There was always at least a two year waiting list because we refused to breed indiscriminately. We didn't breed our bitch unless we found a stud who would enhance our line (it usually worked out that she was bred twice, starting at two years old and ending at six). We bred for both temperament -- a well-rounded Border Collie should be able to relax and be a pet after the work day is done, and good structure. This was before they ever became popular in the general population.

I appreciate this too. You get bashed by anyone these days just because you want a PURE BREED dog. I’ve never bred nor will I, however it is very important to me to have the most healthy dog I can locate with proof of bloodlines of health records. People are way too fast to judge others without having any knowledge to back up their claims. I truly feel bad for GREAT breeders that stay TRUE to the breed. After several years of both of my 15 & 17 year old Dachshunds passing, I decided I wanted to get another ❤. I searched breeders near by & could not find one that doesn’t breed the “Piebalds” dachshund. I do not want a piebald bc I have done my research & they carry recessive genes that lead to many health complications, such as blindness, deafness & the list goes on. So I still do not have a dachshund 😢 as I cannot afford the actual price across states & then to have it shipped. It’s extremely sad what has been allowed to happen to our dog breeds. This will destroy many breeds for generations to come.

People that get these dogs don't care about health or temperament, they just want looks and that's why they end up at backyard breeders. But if they just want looks, or they want to brag about getting a "purebred" for cheap, they should start at the shelter. Shelter dogs are cheap (usually, some are getting more expensive) and usually mixed anyway, so it's better than shelling out money for a dog that's gonna cost you loads in vet bills later down the line

As I was doing some research into the history of the Barbet breed, I was surprised to see just how FEW Barbets there are. Doodles are the bain of many dog professionals. Including myself, a trainer. 50 to 70% of my clients have been doodles in the last 5 years of business. Of the multi-dozens I've trained I only actually liked the temperament/behavior of two individuals. They are crazy upkeep coat wise, crazy smart but rarely 'easy' to train. That is they learn things quickly, but maintaining training is a huge struggle for nearly all my clients as doodles seem to be the worst counter surfers, destructive, and selective hearing dogs of any larger group of dogs I've ever trained. They are super intelligent and extremely reluctant to let go of their own agendas over their owners wishes. In my area, greater Seattle Washington, most doodles also come with a healthy dose of anxiety and the fear based behaviors that come with genetic anxiety. I'm also including all the groomers, veterinarians, trainers, and dog sitters I know personally in my assessment. I know for a fact my experiences with doodles are excessively common. I actually have a pure bred standard poodle who is 11 yrs old and he's the perfect big boi. We got him from a professional breeder who'd also train the dogs perfectly. We have all his papers and records. He's super sweet and gentle. The only problem with him is a chronic ear infection that he's had for years and we're managing it. The infection itself isnt genetic, its from a bowl of water, we let his hair on his ears get long and he got water in his ears, creating the infection. Long story short: it's okay to have a doodle or poodle, if you know and trust the breeder you get it from. There are some very good breeders, but there are even more bad ones. Be careful who you buy your doodle/poodle from.

Very inquisitive, bordering on nosey. Really chill at home but very athletic and able on a walk. Hardy, doesn’t care about the rain or cold; loves the snow or mud, just gets on with it. Shy of other strange dogs. Brilliant with strange children; mostly ignores them but is never aggressive towards them; they just have no utility to her unless they’re being fed and therefore will drop food. Be sure to get the breeder to show their genetics as they’re prone to epilepsy. Floppy ears cause semi frequent infections which needs staying on top of. They need their coat grooming probably 3/4 times a year or it matts. Great dog all in all but if you really want a dog that constantly cuddles up and is always looking to be stroked this isn’t it. You can let the fur grow longer or keep it all short, and pompoms are optional. My boy has never had pompoms because I don't like them, and they would be a problem when we're out in the snow. When I let him get a bit fluffier in the winter, everyone assumes he's a Goldendoodle because he doesn't have the poodle style shaved face. Standard poodles are working dogs and therefore have a lot of energy which isn't perfect for everyone, but they're also very smart, sweet, and easy to train. They're also significantly easier to groom as they have a much more consistent coat than doodles.

I got my white Doberman from a Doberman rescue when she was 8 months old. I had owned Dobermans in the past and knew I could provide her with the care she needed. Suffice to say, it is not easy. I put sunblock on her, limit her time in the sun, have her on a special half raw/half kibble diet, multi vitamins, etc. She also came with crippling anxiety and we have spent a few thousand dollars on professional training. She was worth every penny and worth the daily effort because she's my baby! But when strangers comment on how beautiful she is and how to get one I tell them the expenses and upkeep first before anything else. She's afraid of everything and we modified our lifestyle to better suit hers. (Limit strangers coming over, taking her to crowded places, no unscreened dog sitters, etc.) She is a beautiful, healthy, happy "albino" Doberman and we love her to death! But please do your research when getting a pet who requires special lifelong treatment. Don't half ass their care due to ignorance. They may only live during a fraction of your life but you exist in the entirety of theirs

Someone I know has doodles. This person was almost convinced by the breeder that letting the doodles have puppies (using the male they have as a sire with female dogs arranged by the breeder) would be a GOOD thing, but thankfully their family managed to stop that from happening and convince them to get the puppers fixed. And yes, this is a new dog owner who went into it rushed so they were probably scammed into paying premium as well. I'm probably going to link this video to them, thank you.

A couple years ago we got in contact with a German Shepherd “breeder” because we loved our first GSD so much, but when we went to go look at the pups, we drove into an Amish looking place, and inside was a malnourished mom with tons of puppies. We didn’t know any better, so bought a pup and brought her home. Later that night she was coughing and sneezing up blood, so we rushed her to the 24hr pet clinic. She had severe pneumonia and had to stay for a couple days. Since all the pups were outside like she was, we think the rest most likely died since she was the only one brought home

When I was a kid we had a doodle. We didn't know what we were doing in terms of breeder research so my parents bought him out of a newspaper. The poor pup ended up having to be given to a shelter at 9 months old because he was getting aggressive around me and my toddler brother. The shelter took an x-ray and found that he was born without hip sockets, worst case of hip dysplasia they'd ever seen. He was put down shortly thereafter. He was such a good dog, but unfortunately he was in a lot of pain that we just didn't know about until he grew bigger. I still find myself crying like I did when I realised "put to sleep" was a euphemism 14 years later, he was my first dog and I loved him so much.

Most of them aren’t people aggressive, but they can be neurotic and a handful because mixing two high drive and energy breeds and expecting them to always end up as couch potatoes is such a dangerous mindset. @@キン-u5l Exactly. I needed a dog that would think and decide if it thought I was telling it the right thing or not. I think it’s called intelligent disobedience? She keeps me from going the wrong way, walking into things, walking across a road when it isn’t safe. bringing me to a place to sit down before I realize that anything was wrong. Many times I will tell her to do something and she doesn’t do it. Sometimes it wasn’t safe, sometimes it was the wrong direction, many many times I forgot something like my phone, jacket, purse etc. I need a dog that thinks and has an opinion. Poodles are big enough to do guide work and have the right temperament, the most incredible part is that they can be trained for any other type of service dog work as well. I didn't realize his fur was so long until the blowout! Such an interesting breed, and a handsome boi. I wholeheartedly agree! Designer breeds come from puppy mills. And many of those are mixes with well-known health problems. I have seen some quite wierd ones lately. And they usually start at 1500 euros, and the prize goes up. Whereas many purebred puppies are something between 900-1500 euros. Some of those small, popular breeds cost more though, but I personally don't think that people who breed purebreds with breathing problems etc. are much better from puppy mill breeders... I think that adoption should be the first choise when looking for a dog (or any pet really). If that doesn't work out for some reason, then look into getting a purebred dog from a registered breeder who's proven to be responsible (usually breed-specific facebook groups know a lot about the breeders). An adult dog being sold from a private person can be an option too, that way you aren't contributing to puppy mills (at least directly). Of course a seller could lie about the dog's health and temperament, but I would recommend getting a trial period of a few weeks (with written agreements). Usually people who are looking for a good home will agree, if not suggest it themselves. Someone who doesn't agree or seems to othervise hurry, is usually hiding something.

Thank you so much for talking about responsible breeding. Backyard breeders and puppy mills ruin the image of breeding - breeding for the perfect healthy dog for the job. I really like the breeders who spay/neuter as well as take their animals if the people decide to give up. Yes, adopting is important but it's not the best option for every occasion. Not everyone can deal with surprise temperaments, surprise physicalities, surprise health issues. Certainly mutts can be working dogs too, it's been proven, but it's really chance and personality. Personally I like older dogs and I just want a couch hogger, so I'm going to adopt. Now a moment to talk about my dogs. 🥰 One previous dog was a lab border collie mix. He wasn't collie enough to be "herdy" and not lab enough to be laid-back. He was intense and ran away to go swimming all the time. He was also scared of mice, cats, and horses. Imagine if you got him as a puppy intending him to be a livestock guardian dog - you would have your work cut out for you, especially if you have ducks and a pond. He would be *in* there. My current dog is a greyhound lab mix. He is an anxious bony leggy dog who likes going inside buildings, sinks in water, and needs winter coats. The shelter thought he was a shepherd mix when he was a puppy. The vet said nope, he has greyhound hips, legs, and face. It was really surprising and funny when we took him swimming the first time - our previous dogs have all floated and paddled, then this pup sinks like a rock! He now wears a life jacket whenever there's water involved. I like the surprise breed combinations shelter dogs provide and it's another example of what you see is not necessarily what you get! 🤣

!!! We adopted a mother and son Lab/Border Collie mix!! Thankfully they were laid back and didn't need much exercise. Since they were older we only had them 9 years, but the son left a deep impression on my heart. His BC was obvious in his intelligence. We had to put momma down in December and unexpectedly had to do the same with the son in March. Now we have a Border Collie, possibly Springer Spaniel mix and an...allegedly Mastiff mix who we're fairly certain has Lab in him since he has a very soft mouth despite being a rambunctious puppy. I think they got Mastiff because he's grown so fast? Idk. Just brought them home today and I'm currently cuddling with the Collie. I completely understand why someone would want to buy from a reputable breeder but I like mutts. I like adapting myself to dogs that otherwise might not be given a proper chance to shine. ❤

I also really enjoy getting to know the weird personalities of mystery mutts! I grew up with one, a big hairy german shepherd/collie/aussie/golden retriever/etc., and she was kind of magical. She loved everyone, but especially kids and tiny little dogs. She was five when we got her, and I was two. She was fifteen when she died, and I don't think I know any other 65 pound dogs to live so long who weren't weird mutts. My current dog is (best guess) a husky/border collie/something. He seemed so calm when I met him! Turned out he had a fever from a nasty case of kennel cough, and two weeks later he was steeling bread off the counters, chewing up all of our shoes, shredding our favorite hardcover books, and somehow eating a whole bunch of bananas out of the peels without detaching the tops. Like we should have expected from a one year old husky/border collie mix. We had to walk him three times a day until he was four, and move all books and food completely out of reach. He's eleven now, and has mellowed out a lot, but he still goes through the recycling if I miss a walk. He's only barely starting to develop arthritis, and is still violently destroying squeaky toys, chasing balls, and running up and down the many stairs in my apartment, which is a lot more than I can say for most purebred dogs his age and size. Medium/large mixes of working breeds are probably the healthiest dogs you can find, they have delightfully funky personalities, and they only get better with age. I think sometimes people get so caught up on breeds, and they don't consider the awesome experience of going to a shelter and letting the dog pick you.

Thank you so much for being open about the issues of designer breeds. At the end of the day it’s the dogs who suffer. I can take people calling me a ‘pedigree snob’ but at least the dogs I purchase will NEVER end up in a shelter so I can happily say I do support shelters and rescues because I don’t support breeders who mass pump out dogs and don’t care about there they go. (when looking into a breeder contracts about returning the dog are very important! You don’t know what could happen in the next 15 years ish of your life!) Ethical/responsible breeders and good rescues (yes there is such a thing as bad rescues) need to work together to highlight these issues, because as I said it’s the dogs who suffer and they should be our priority ❤️

Just a question but why do you not support the breeding of them? There are good ethical breeders out there. (Yes they are very few but they exist) I don’t think the whole designer breed should be wiped out. Instead we need to fix the backyard breeding issue. Because it’s not just the doodle that gets backyard bred. It’s basically all breeds. Im just curious why the doodle is being attacked out of all the other breeds and mixed-breeds out there.
@gcollz_2 жыл бұрын
@@maple_the_aussiedoodle3167 you cannot ethically breed a mutt in my own opinion. Sure you can argue that breeding a mix breed for a purpose is potentially ok but doodles don’t fall into this category - too many crappy breeders for that, as stated in this video they will lie and say the dog can do anything. The main point of this being doodles don’t and never will have an official standard. How do you strive to make a healthy breed if each breeder is making something different? It’s all over the place. I’ve seen so many doodles with really bad proportions and I just know they’re going to have health problems as they get older. Never said anything to their owners bc it’s not my place but ironically most of the owners are the first people to call pedigrees unhealthy 😂 (yes a lot of the BYB pedigrees are but that’s what you get if you support bad breeding) And agreed I don’t like any BYB but doodles are just money making. Same with bullies. A really good example to look at is the XL Bully here in the UK (which is also considered a designer breed - AKA a money making devise for people who like to profit from dog breeding). The XL Bully has no standard it’s a mix of many bully breeds, the biggest issue with this breed is the breeders are so crappy they give them to just anyone for a status dog. They’ve absolutely blown up here and there is now talk of them being added to the banned dog list and they’ll likely take a lot of breeds with them, as hard as many of us are trying to undo the damage of Breed Specific Legislation bad breeders and irresponsible owners ruin it for everyone, and it will cost a lot of innocent dogs lives. Doodles whilst they aren’t usually the same level as a bully breed they can still be very unpredictable. Speaking to a lot of the dog community most attacks they’ve had on dogs have come from doodles. You can’t predicted a temperament of a dog that doesn’t even have a standard really. You aren’t making a breed your bashing too different breeds with different jobs together. Sure some may turn out ok but what happens to the rest? Do we just shove them under the carpet? My main final point is mixbreeds aren’t healthier than pedigrees. If you can find me any reputable data that states this then please do. My point here is a doodle doesn’t have a standard, how do you say what the best specimen is when there isn’t a standard? How do you then compare that to a pedigree? I can also confidently state in most poorly done test they aren’t testing well bred pedigrees, so the whole breed gets dragged down by crappy breeders who only have eyes for money. I’ve be very interested to see this test done by breed clubs although I’ve no idea how you’ll compare it to such an unpredictable breed. Doodles are just all over the place unfortunately and I just don’t support unethical breeding. Why should the dogs pay the price for our greed?

Thank you so much for saying all this. I feel like many countries, especially big countries with easy access to dogs (AFAIK you can buy dogs and cats in pet stores in the US or Japan? That is INSANE), completely muddled what dog breeding actually means. Where I live registered breeders will often travel across the continent to breed their dog with a specimen from a completely different gene pool branch as to avoid diseases. Not all breeders are greedy, not all breeding is cruel. If there are no dogs that match your lifestyle and expectations in the shelter, it's okay to get a dog breed you know what to expect from, from a responsible breeder nonetheless. Adopt don't shop is a great concept, but sometimes people will adopt irresponsibly and will be unable to meet a traumatized dog's needs, or treat shelter animals as disposable.

AFAIK most pet stores have phased out selling puppies since there's been massive outrage surrounding the conditions the dogs are bred in. PetSmart (or at least the ones local to me) is partnered with local rescues to adopt out cats and kittens, so they still have those in store but it's a separate little room with lovely cages you're not allowed to bring your dog into, so the cats don't get stressed out.

We were looking for a new dog after losing our Weimaraner to old age and my wife had met one who was in training to be a therapy dog and fell in love with it. Since we were getting older as well, we wanted something a little bit lower energy that the Weim (only a little bit, she still gets more than an hour a day of walks), and the barbet fit the bill. When I worked at a vet clinic we had someone bring in a petco puppy (already about twenty red flags) that they'd just purchased. It was a little brown doodle that could still be held in one hand. Since it was a petco puppy and since I'm in ohio, we know for sure that it was bread by the Amish in a puppymill. The owners had had it for about two days, and it had already gotten parvo. When I was scanning their paperwork, I saw the price they paid for it. $5000. They'd set up a payment plan for this dog through Petco and were paying a couple hundred a month, and would be for several years. For a sick, poorly bred dog that already had parvo and was going to develop who knew what kinds of issues down the line.

I spoke to a breeder who wanted to find the right dog to match our family, over just saying "whichever one u think is cute" or some thing. Meanwhile someone in my family has a breeder (of large, loud, hard to train working dogs) who literally called her up to see if she wanted to buy more dogs... Be very very very very wary and picky if you decide to go with a breeder, and try to find one who works with / donates to rescues and shelters. If you have to go for breeder over adoption for whatever reason, you should always find a breeder who has a passion for the breed, cares more about health than show-standards, and one that's well reputed, does health testing, and cares about where their puppies end up.

While my family can't be sure if our designer mixes came from irresponsible breeders, we can say they came from irresponsible previous owners. Our yorkie schnauzer mix had a fear of beer bottles and feet like he thought he was going to be kicked at any time. The shelter we adopted him from completely shaved him down so we don't know how bad his coat was. He developed heart and vision problems but lived a long life with us. And our current Maltese Poodle puppy came from a house in the neighborhood who just let's their dogs wander the neighborhood unsupervised. He followed us home, dirty and ungroomed. His owners complained about having another puppy in the house when we returned him (one of their unfixed dogs had a litter of ten) and gave him to us without hesitation. So far, he seems to be a happy and healthy pup as confirmed by our vet. He just needs to get used to being handled and groomed but he's making good progress.

We have a labradoodle. I grew up with dogs but my husband and one of my kids have allergies. We got on a waitlist for a labradoodle before COVID from a lady who was a registered poodle breeder for decades. It took us years to get to the front of the list and we had to wait a couple of more litters because my husband had allergic reactions to all of the first couple of litters. He's a year old now and very healthy. Our vet's office loves him and have seen a few other dogs from the same breeder that are healthy with good temperaments. Our first time at the groomer we got a high quote but he cut the price in half after working with him. He said they'd had a lot of problems with labradoodles but he was wonderfully well behaved. When we needed to send him to a kennel overnight at a doggy daycare/resort, they required a couple of meet and greets before they accepted him. I was very nervous because he hadn't spent a lot of time around other dogs, just humans and he didn't go to puppy school (COVID overfilled the classes around here). He was amazing! They had camera's so we could see how he was doing and he so well behaved and they've welcomed back any time. We discussed getting a dog for 10 years before we settled on a breeder and got on the waitlist. We needed a big yard first, at least one person home with our dog every day and a dog who didn't trigger allergies. Our breeder went to great pains to make sure that we were good candidates to adopt. He surpassed our expectations and he's a wonderful, smart, laid back dog who fits perfectly into our family. I think people are being wayyy too harsh on the mix. That some shitty breeders exist doesn't mean the mix is bad.

@@Norgar756 You seriously cannot bring wolves into this. Wolves are not domesticated. Period. What are domesticated are dogs. Wolves only live on average of 6 to 8 years in the wild, I'm not sure how this is any longer than the average of a dog? Even in captivity the maximum lifespan observed in a wolf in captivity is only 19 years and the average being between 8-14 years. I personally know several dogs who are between 15 and 22 years old and still thriving and *gasp* two of them are Shih Tzu's from a breeder! Without breeders we would not have breeds or dogs with predictable temperaments. If you enjoy doodles good for you I'm happy you found a breed category you love, I personally love herding breeds. There is no need to be rude about someone's choice not to get a specific breed or whether or not to support a rescue or a breeder to obtain the breed they are looking for. Breeding dogs gives us predictability; there are no two dogs from a rescue that are alike even if they are from the same litter or same situation. In a planned litter you are not just breeding two dogs together you are breeding the history of every single dog behind them which is why is it crucial to know the lineage to the dogs you are breeding. That lineage gives us information that is vital to many situations on where that puppy will go; show prospect, sports home, active family life, a service dog prospect, or even just a pet. Having an even tempered calm dog who is content with walks and playing in the yard is perfect for most family homes but you cannot usually find something that easily in a rescue. There is nothing wrong with adopting or shopping as long as it is responsibly.

Another problem is not understanding or respecting the "job" these dogs were originally bred to do. We raised, trained and competed in retriever trials with Labs for many, many years. They were my husband's waterfowl hunting and fishing companions. They also lived in the house, slept on our bed and were much loved members of the family. Labradors and poodles are highly intelligent and were both bred to retrieve waterfowl. They need mental stimulation and physical activity.
