In a rare moment, Efren Reyes, one of professional pool's greatest players of all time, is interviewed by Mark Wilson, who has known him, and traveled with him, for over 35 years. It's a rare glimpse at the history and personality of the quiet player fondly known as "Bata" in the Philippines, or "The Magician" in many other parts of the world. We were honored to have this opportunity to record and share this with you. Enjoy!

Great interview, Thank you Mark..........I was lucky enough to play Efren about 2001 at Hard Times....set up match, races to 11.....big spot for me (I have a job :) ) Efren won 11-10 both sets, but on the second set when he won he jumped up in joy....I still tell people (as I'm telling you) that I made Efren jump......Efren is so much more than just the GOAT-he's a TOTAL GENTLEMAN !! PS...when I played a safety on him I walked away from the table shaking my head laughing thinking (Really Nick, you are going to try and play a safety on Efren!! ) PPS..One of the biggest mistakes of my pool life was not taking my two teenage children out of school that day to watch me play Efren.

I dont know why every expects him to know English perfectly. He probably wonders why nobody talks Phillipinno perfectly or maybe thats not his character to judge. His game does all the talking not his mouth. He doesnt judge anyone and nobody should judge him. God sits on his shoulder and makes him play shots humans cant imagine. Now I finally understood why Efren is so good because he played so many pool discipline like rotation, carom, one pocket, snooker, etc. Every discipline needs different approach to playing. It's the reason why he was able to solve every difficult shot because of how he played all those discipline and thereby earned the monicker "The Magician"! He is the Goat!

What an amazing person Mr. Efren is. I was just smiling the whole time listening to this interview. This man embodied the sport of pool and is the greatest ambassador to the game! What was emphasised again in this interview is that Efren was a specialist in rotation pool games (which would have included 9-ball) and at his peak from 1973-1976. This was 10 years before he ever visited the US. After 1976 (in the Philippines, remember, that had so many great players) Efren could not get a game. He was too good, and no one would play him. Thus, he started playing mainly carom billiards, and his rotation pool game declined in standard. The Efren the world has seen in his thirties, forties and fifties, incredible player though he is, was not as good as the money player who was at his peak at about the age of 20. Another true fact that Efren will not talk about is that he is extremely generous. He has given most of the money he ever earned away to poor relatives and friends. He is a class act in a sport that has not always produced role models you would wish your children to emulate.

I remember in one interview he asked after a won match that it could have been his best version, or something like that. Then Efren responded and said he was much better when he was younger,... the interviewer was lost for words for a moment and thought Efren was kidding. When i watched that interview, i also thought he must be joking, now this interview proves he was serious. Omg, so the world was actually deprived of seeing the true peak form of the Magician. @timothybolshaw - I believe that he said it was 1972 - 76. Legend has it (when he was at his prime) that once Efren saw the 1, it was game over. Although the tables back then were a bit forgiving, his ability was far from that.

@@SlickRick4EVER there is also a story from one of the old guy from our neighborhood who happened to be a college student wherein his school is near the billiard hall where efren usually played money game. They had invented a game (handicap) in a rotation which is design for efren where he is only allowed to shoot one at a time!! meaning after efren take his shot, regardless if efren pocket the ball or not, his opponent will take his shot and so on. So, efren needs to pocket the ball and at the same time think of a way to cover the white ball from the next ball and still efren didn't lose a match. Imagine if this is true, how good efren was, back then?

Someone makeshift a game where Efren could only shoot one shot on his turn and, regardless whether it was made or not, the opponent took the next turn. Well, Bata made the shot but always left the next player without a shot... all the time.

Efren studied in school as a kid to his early teens, had english lessons in all schools there but he did not do well in classes because he always played billards after classes till the wee hours in the morning so he is sleepy in his school classes..

So basically, Efren was truly a god in 1970-76, so much so that nobody wanted to play him anymore, so he decided to go and play some more obscure games for a little while and almost quit. Then he came back in the 80’s and although he wasn’t as good as before, he was still the best pool player in the world for the two decades that followed. Man, what a loss for mankind that we don’t have videos of his playing from the 70’s... Also, if there is a tidbit about playing pool: any of the top players can run out easily if their break works well. It’s what you do when you don’t have a shot that determines whether or not you become a champion.

Mark is able to put Effren at ease and conducts an entertaining interview of the world's best pool player. And Mark's imitation of Earl Strickland is hilariously on point. Not only is Effren the best pool player ever, his game is the most elegant. For instance if his opponent pulls off a good safety and Effren is faced with a possible jump shot, Effren will not jump. He instead turns to his incredible arsenal, often producing a shot that is much more spectacular and difficult than a jump shot. At the same time he's being a class act because he's respecting his opponents good safety shot. Effren is the only magician I've seen who can produce real magic. Mark's analogy that Effren is the Michael Jordan of pool is spot on. Effren is a bit quieter than Jordan though..... final word, Strickland, possibly the 2nd best player ever, often brought out the best in Effren's playing.

Shane Van Boening is tons better than Strickland. Strickland was a great national champion in the 1980s and 1990s, but he never had hard competition, until Efren came.

Strickland's rudeness totally erases whatever his achievements have been! At one time he said that he lost because luck was on Efren's side. Efren can joke about luck but in reality, he plans 3-4 steps ahead of the game, much like in Chess.

I've listened to this twice now and the second time helped me to understand Efren better than I have before. This was quite an extraordinary interview and I really appreciated the way you handled it and told the stories. It's 2 years later now and Efren still playing and still excellent though he no longer is the best of the best. But I'm amazed. Effren is only 10 days younger than I am. I'm all achy and in a wheelchair. He's the same age as I am, 67 now, and he's walking around with good vigor, I know he's got eye problems but he's still able to shoot and he still got very good control of his stroke and shots. And there's absolutely no doubt that even if his shooting ability has degraded his thinking ability has only gotten better. I'm really glad that I accidentally watched the first ever video I ever saw just a few months ago. I've watched everything I could and he always amazes me even though he loses. Mark, thank you so much for this brilliant interview and for sharing stories of your time with Efren.

I met Efren, I'm sure he doesn't remember, at the Billiard Den in Westville NJ. This was the late 80s. I noticed a shy looking Asian fellow, so I asked him if he wanted to play a game of 9 ball. He agreed, I broke and ran them out. He went to look for a serious game and later found out who he was. A story for the grandkids.

As a Filipino watching this, my tears drop... We never missed to watch an international game on television of Efren together w my Dad... He reminds me me both, my dad and Efren has the same kind of natural sweetness in a persons character... The humbleness and their smiles... I considered my dad as GOAT of automotive mechanic.. He passed away 2013..... He can do a work first without money payment from his clients... Later sometimes we were suprised a knocked a door, strangers giving us fresh big fish or food... So great to see this, Thanks Mark. My Efren story, I've only been playing a few years but shortly after I started getting serious, I heard he was going to be playing near me/SF bay. I went, he was there but he wasn't going to play in the tourney as he had some private big money match lined up. So it was early and he was doing some trick shots and small challenge matches. I played a race to 5 9 ball; he was so nice. He actually missed a shot, left me fairly easy on the 6 and the leave was a 7/9 combo, but it was far down table. I was pondering what to do, and he reached under the table and handed me the bridge. I made it and actually won one of the 5. Re: Hong Kong the Earl match, I actually stumbled upon that series of videos before I met him. If anyone hasn't seen them, Dang! I found it so captivating I have watched the full version (there are some abbreviated ones out there) 4 times. Mark's commentary on them is superb.

He said when the ball was difficult they didn't know what to do. I think he means if a particular ball was in a difficult spot such as tied up in a cluster or hard to get position on for example. Also he could make a multiple rail kick and play a return safety which American players had not seen before as Mark Wilson mentioned at one point.

Efren when he was a kid was being beaten by his father for playing pool because his father wanted him to finish his studies in elementary school (note: the connotation at that time iwas that playing pool is gambling). He just doesn't want to see his kid in a pool table. When Efren started making a lot of money from hustling in different places in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, that's when they thought that they can't force Efren to stop playing.
