I was privileged to witness his beyond outstanding performance and audience interractions in Dallas, TX back in the fall of 77. I've never forgotten that experience as we sat in center about five rows back. What made it even more enjoyable, it was my cousin's treat of a lifetime for me....

Funny thing is that he played in Spain for all the great singers and dancers in perfect compa's. When I met him in 1980 in Australia he told me that when you play solo you don't have to play in strict compas! Guess you like to play free.

poor carlos, he has to put up with the "no compas" asholes "he's not playing flamenco, he's doing his own thing that isn't authentic " doing your own thing is the MOST AUTHENTIC FLAMENCO

I agree @roman14032,they said the same thing about MANITAS DE PLATA Both were GREAT!!!in my opinion .
Well I take your point that playing from the heart is the most important thing, but Flamenco is a tradition and compas is one of the most important elements. You may disagree, but people are entitled to feel that the music is weaker without the compas.

I suppose he plays with passion but it's very strange to play bulerias without following the rhythm. I don't uderstand why Carlos Montoya would learn all these hard falsetas but just not bother with working out how they fit into the compas. Listen to Sabicas play bulerias and you will see what I mean!
@noelalvarez1414 жыл бұрын
old style bulerias was created on 3x2 like fandango. 12 times buleria was an evolution of that
@Anriuko2 жыл бұрын
Poor Montoya, why didn't he bother to learn some flamenco?!
@Anriuko2 жыл бұрын
@jon athan I have, but obviously I don't know-it-all. On a general level, I'm against formalisms. To me flamenco is a restless, living entity that defies being subdued by academic correctness. Although there are idiomatic phrases and patterns and tradition that make it recognizable, being "true" flamenco is more about intimately understanding the soul of that living entity, which to me means understanding life itself (from human perspective). I don't like superficiality, showboating, egotism and self-promotion, especially in arts, and consequently I don't like many of the more modern takes on flamenco that seem to be all about impressing people as if music was an art of illusion. To me it's the art of REALITY! When the stories you tell are all about Your Self, it doesn't take long to determine there's not much intrigue in them and to lose interest. My original comment was sarcastic and regrettably just another example of how not to communicate with people if you want to have a meaningful, civil discussion...

I don't think this is a bulerias, these are the wrong chords for the general theme. It should be A and Bb predominantly.

You people ever hear of freestyle? Carlos played everything freestyle and improvised. He is #1. Sabicas is great. Paco was fine on his own. But his band stuff sucks. Boring catchy repeated melodies for the masses.
@mossimmo12715 жыл бұрын
I listen to Montoya not because I think he is a great player but because after a few bars I realise how good the real flamenco players like Sabicas, Paco de Lucia, Juan Serrano, Paco Pena et al are. Montoya? not even close to these guys, if fact I don`t even rate him a good guitarist, his sound is just too awful.

He has a very powerful rasgaeo on him. His picado, hmmm...not so good.
