The original blues and Flamenco are similar. The songs are earthy filled with pain and sorrow and just like Blues the singing came before the guitar and so did the dance the guitar came later. It is important to understand the Flamenco has been around a lot longer than the blues and thus had time to grow and become more advanced. If you we're around at the time when Flamenco guitar was beginning I bet it was just as raw as Robert Johnson sounded..

A great programme at the time I thought. I watched it in 74 and as far as I know it was never repeated. My Dad was impressed with Jeff Beck [as was I]. The day after the broadcast when I discussed it with a respected figure, he slated it as being somewhat passe/banal etc. I knew at that point I was going to have trouble understanding certain reactions to music. I was right in that. Here we are nearly 40 years on and still arguing.

It's a style, Bulerias. You could say he improvised on the rhythm of Bulerias.

the programme was aimed at peple who know nothing of the guitar, the interviewer was just trying to keep it simple. those calling him out on here should learn to have the same level of human respect that Paco Pena has.

That was improvised. What he played was the compas, which is the the meter or characteristic rhythm structure of a flamenco style, of a bulería which is one of the many flamenco styles

@Y2H He's comparing them on the basis of both musics being folk music. the music is based on an aural tradition. they are the same in that regard. and really, flamenco music in itself isn't that complicated. the playing is incredible, but the same could be said in blues.

@Y2H Blues popular simple and Flamenco complicated and classy?? How old are you son? Blues and Flamenco are improvised, and come from the heart. They are similar in feeling, absolutely different in tecnique. And none of them are classy. Flamenco is folk.

@Y2H indeed blues is popular music , meanwhile flamenco players like to called them arte hondo, not folk, not popular, but there is a hughe diference on this, its hard to understand, there is a great TRADITION on this, probably he compared flamenco with blues with he didnt know anything of music after all.

Ignorance is a shame music is so universal and listening and respecting all aspects will make you a better musicians. Music is about sharing a feeling only those of us who need reassurance Kling to the need to compare artist and style and choose winners.

@ddelpercio I know that. The problem is that when it is applied to people it means "people of African ancestry", or "Black people". It's closely associated with "the N word", which is a corruption of it. Unfortunately, a lot of people who are spring loaded to the offended position take offense to it.

To add to my thoughts Blues was vital increasing the jazz movement which really is the evolution of the Blues and I feel Jazz musicians are the most knowledgable musicians in the world . As a matter of fact Paco Delucia has combined his Flamenco with Jazz elements to create his sound, so you can argue that blues has impacted Flamenco.

Flamenco guitars are built lighter in weight than classical guitars, which produces a “brighter” and more percussive sound quality.
