Rare Hybrid Snapping Turtle Planted Paludarium (Only 50 in the World)

In this week's video, we add a one-of-kind hybrid snapping turtle to the animal room! This is not something I intended for at all, but the opportunity presented itself and I took it.
Last month we toured the Moorecroft Conservation Foundation ( • Finally Getting Turtle... ) and saw a tone of incredible turtles. While there, I talked about how I would be getting some of the turtles we saw. I'm still doing that, but something else happened.
As Charley showed up around, we saw a group of snapping turtles. These weren't your ordinary snappers, though. He explained that they were Common Snapper and Alligator Snapper Hybrids, which came from the late Fred Grunwald. It wasn't thought that they could interbreed, but one day, Fred's turtles did exactly that. Apparently there's likely less than 50 in the entire world!
I didn't intent on getting one of these turtles, but Charley said that they needed homes. I know that I'm in a unique position where I can provide for this animal into adulthood, so I decided to take the opportunity. In this video, I show you how I designed a grow-out paludarium for it. Enjoy and let me know what you think in the comments!

I'm so excited about this! I didn't anticipate getting a snapper ever again, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity. This is a true legacy animal that's extremely rare. It's only a baby now, but it will most likely get around the size of a common snapping turtle. That said, no one knows for sure how big they can grow, so only time will tell. Let me know what you think about it and what would you name it? Does Cookie sound good to you or not? Enjoy the video and sorry for the late upload. 💚

Tanner, I know most folks have already praised both the turtle and the setup - but I want to compliment the video itself. You do a great job of including visuals, like pouring the substrate out of your hands while discussing them. These moments only pass for a few seconds, but they enrich the video in subtle ways. I know all of those shots take time/thought/effort. Great job, keep up the awesome work.

@@StiggyAzalea It sounds like this was an inadvertent breeding by Fred rather than 'messing' per se with the genetics. However intergrades of other herps occur in the wild more often than some think. To some extent this is about the purism of scientists and the mania for classification. Further and further subdivisions of morphology and minor genetic changes emphasised, rather than the understanding that biology is dynamic. One mountain range or mudbank will erode and another water source will combine with another and ' sub' species will integrate again or closely related species may meet for the first time etc. These divisions may be hundreds, thousands or millions of years old. Substantial morphological changes in fish have occured since building of dams has isolated gene pools etc. These changes in shape and morphology have occurred within decades. I think newly separated lizards ( a gecko from memory) in artificial flooding scenarios have also been documented, with notable size changes from previously contiguous populations, this having occurred within decades. The change here occurring due to selection advantages/disadvantages of inherited traits within the existing gene pool. However with genuinely rare species, like for example the giant Leachianus gecko of the multiple Island nation of New Caledonia, breeders have long been aware of the need to maintain pure lines of Island specified subspecies & to be very aware of when hybrids blur the line. Chahoua geckos have also hybridized with ( I think) crested geckos in captivity. Why labeling and stock control & ensuring subsequent purchasers are aware of any - what I personally would regard as mostly undesirable blurring - (beyond the scientific understanding that there is now proof the species CAN combine).

Super excellent setup, and I give you accolades for taking on such a notoriously destructive, and potentially violent species. As you and I know, the animal is a reflection of it's environment, and your environments are a grade above the rest. This animal will thrive under you care, and I'd wager even bond with you before a decade rolls by. I wish you all the best in your endeavors, and am eager to watch the lil' chomper grow up!! Thanks for the amazing content!! Truly a quality channel!

Your new turtle girl is beautiful! I’m glad you were able to take her in and give her a new home. I’m sorry about your previous turtle, and I’m glad your heart was able to let you bring this new turtle in need of a great home to your place.

Nice! What an inspiration this is. I am actually planning creating an environment where you get the beauty of an aquarium as well having living plants growing on top of it 🙂

aw man we had a pet snapping turtle growing up - those suckers are smart, and great climbers! I swear the little guy could tell my family apart from everyone else, 'cause he never bit us once but bit someone watching him while we were on vacation once. They're awesome creatures, love them SO much.

love your comment about grieving your turtle. I completly understood what you meant, sometimes I know it is time for another animal/same species of animal or it is just the right timing. :)

Its incredible how Serpa made the water line so naturally and look like an actual river bank, I could see it without the water. That's amazing skills if you ask me

I think Vida would be a beautiful name for her. She's proof that life can thrive and grow in the least expected places since she's such a rare hybrid. Also, she is clearly full of life in every scale and scute. Beautiful tank and turtle! 💚
