Everyone talks about what a great man he was but no one discusses his writing. He was the greatest metaphorical writer -aside from the Old Testament writers and Shakespeare - to ever have lived. And his “Alley” novels, though about the poor, were rich with warmth and complexity, so that you don’t see the characters as merely “poor” but as fully humans with complex lives and social issues, especially re. the subjugation of women.

Brave man, great artist. He has words of wisdom for all of us, Western and Eastern, in the 21st century. His voice is one of humanity of moderation--NOT intolerance, NOT religious fanaticism, but NOT atheism either. I am happy that his works are now widely available in the West. I hope they are so in Egypt and in the Middle East. I guess he was pretty much finished as a writer by the time this story was filmed, but I appreciate the posting. Long live the words of Mahfouz!

I’m disappointed in Naguib’s head-scratching rebuke of Salman Rushdie. Love all the books Mafouz has written, but as a “radical” writer himself, always under threat of assassination, I’m shocked that he didn’t support his fellow writer. Could there be some rivalry going on with that? Rushdie, the younger generation, equaling the great writer by being as prolific and popular?

انا الكركرات الصحراوي حفيظ قائد الحرب العالمية الصحراء الغربية وأنها عاصمة العالم قوة ورعبا وان الصحراء الغربية دار الفقه الصحيح وقد قال الله في القران ولا تعجل بالقران من قبل حتى يقضى اليك وحيه وقل ربي زدني علما ولقد عهدنا الى ادم من قبل فنسيي ولم نجد له عزما اي هذا توجيه في القران ليس للنبي محمد صلى بل للمهدي المنتظر اخر الرسل و سر القران ليس له وقت للحفظ القران ولا يمكن أن يخصص وقت للحفظ القران اي لابد من وحي الله مباشرة المهدي المنتظر لان الامر يختلف عن السبعينات كما يشير القران قد واعد الله ادم بحفظ القران لكن نسيي ولم يجد الله عزما في ادم مثل المهدي المنتظر لا رغبة له في حفظ القران منهنا تدخل الله وقال للمهدي المنتظر لا تعجل بالقران من قبل أن يقضى اليك وحيه اما تخصص بهذا للنبي محمد صلى ضرب من الخيال كان نبي محمد نزل عليه القران والله يجهه لا يعجل به للاخرين اصح ان فهم القران صعب ولا شيخ من شيوخ البطيخ توصل الى قليل واكثرهم لم ينسبوا انفسهم من الشيوخ منهم احد في الجزائر واخر في أستراليا واخر في العراق متوفى قد ارخ ان المهدي المنتظر اخر الرسل
