Today we are going to solve a very interesting JEE Physics problem which you can expect in exams like JEE Mains, BITSAT, JEE Advanced etc.
The problem states:-
A boy of mass 50 kg is standing at one end of a 9.0 m long boat of mass 100 kg that is floating motionless on a calm lake. The boy walks to the other end of the boat and stops there. The boat also moves and finally stops due to water resistance. If force of water resistance is proportional to velocity of the boat relative to water. what is the magnitude of the net displacement s of the boat?
(a) s = 0.0 m
(b) s = 3.0 m
(c) s less than 3.0 m
(d) s greater than 3.0 m
Now unlike other man-boat problems where we easily find the displacement of the boat by conservation of momentum, we have another factor here ie. water resistance.
This water resistance changes the entire story and will try to confuse you.
But if you are really a good JEE aspirant and have done preparation to a decent level in physics, you will be able to find the solution correctly.
Do give this JEE physics question an attempt and if you fail to find the correct solution, go through the entire solution sincerely.
The concept used to solve this question is change is momentum will be zero in both cases because finally both the man and boat come to a rest.
