Hi, just thought I'd ask a question about the Massey Ferguson 135, here in Canada, it was apparently sold as 35 HP, the same as it's predecessor, the MF35, I tried to do a search and it doesn't give me any information, only say that it is a 44.4 HP tractor in both versions, has a kid on the farm, 2 of my uncle's had one of those, and always said that they were 35 HP, it was there little tractor's, they had bigger ones. We had the MF165, with multi power, cab and allied loader, and a Cockshutt 40 deluxe (1956), 48 HP, but with it's tall and narrow back tires and long nose, was stronger than the MF 165, rated at 52 HP, but Dad had it tested on the Dyno and it developed like 54, compared to the specs at 48-49 HP. Jee, do I miss that smell and sound of the cockshutt 40 deluxe, diesel engine, the Perkins inline 4 cylinders, wish I could find and/or afford one, a cousin finished rebuilt one 4 years ago and it costed him over $8,000, somebody was ready to buy it even before it was all finished painting and decals installed, over $2,000 just in bearings Thank and have a great day, Jul's

I've plowed 100's acres with that 794 plow - on a 65, & 165 s - our 35X had a job lifting them high enough to clear the ground! - and so that's how you can pull it all - 1st Hi in4sp box; had a 148MP and had to use 3rd Low MP-Hi to get same fwd speed was OK but a pain down the hill if the plow choked on straw / weeds etc 'cos rev Low was soooo low thnx 4 the moemories

This is a story about fitting a 4 wheel drive to a machine that wasn't designed for 4 wheel drive. I worked for a MF dealer from 1965 for 14 years and one of the last jobs I was involved with was a 185. The tractor was sold new to a Farmer in Cheshire and we fitted a four wheel traction conversion before delivery. Within a week we were called out to it because the hydraulics were noisy. I went out to have a look and found it had been fitted with the biggest plough I had ever seen, from memory it was a Lemkin 4 furrow reversible with massif mullboards. Basically the 185 couldn't lift it. I checked the hydraulic pressure and it was fine. I went back to the depot and reported that there was nothing wrong with the tractor it was the plough it was too big. Two weeks later I was sent back on site to meet a guy from Lemkin he had an assistor kit that fitted on a plate under the tractor where the tow bar should go with an assistor ram pushing the plough up from underneath. When the plough was lifting you could see the plate bending. I went back to the depot told them it wasn't on we have a tractor fitted with four wheel drive so it can pull more and an assistor ram so it can lift more its recipe for disaster. A week later another call out noisy hydraulics again we saw the tractor in the field ploughing pouring out black smoke it was struggling. The hydraulics sounded like a bag of tools being shaken. The pump was nackered. A week later the clutch has gone, another week the multipower gone, The clutch went again, Then the front axle case broke because the four wheel drive axle was hanging from the axle case when the tractor reared up taking the front wheels off the ground. The final straw The hydraulics failed big style. The assistor ram plate ripped the bottom out of the hydraulic case and the pump and all the oil was on the floor. All this and no MF warranty because the tractor had been modified. Lesson leaned there me thinks.

+Robert Higgins Not a clue, but can't be that common now, would have been quite expensive when new, there would have been a few companies offering conversions back in the day too like Selene, and Four Wheel Traction

+Metsa Man - 4x4 was an option - companies would offer conversions but they cost a lot of money so not many people bought them so they are now very rare

Four Wheel Traction offered a four wheel drive kit if I remember correctly.

Yes I believe the original owner had 3 4wd 135's - I think this one is the 4 wheel traction version, this one has the spacer similar to a MF148 and an 8 speed box , again similar to the non multipower 148 (dont know much else about this tractor, but the first tractor I ever drove was a nonmultipower 148!

Way to high a gear. The engine will wear too fast working like this with low oil pressure. Lower gear and around 2 K rpm.

You need an engine of 50hp and greater to pull 3 plows otherwise you are going to kill your engine fairly quick!⚠️

kzbin.info/www/bejne/bH-soJWKhrqdf5I 42hp 950 and 4 furrow plough says different, this 135 4wd it was its first time with a new owner so he’s in a high gear to test the capability of the 4wd, anything over 26hp can pull 3 furrows but it’s dependent on ploughing with and depth, and available traction and ground conditions the 135 was ploughing very deep here in most cases a 3 furrow plough is no more difficult to pull than 2 as the rear furrow puts more draft weight on the rear left wheel of the tractor

I have used 3x14" without any problems with a MF135. It's all about traction ( weight ) and low gears. And the right soil. I think it's more likely to kill the transmission something that happens to them than the engine. And it's quite easy to brake the lift and front axles when using big plows on them.
