Great video, finally someone who has actually played the Xbox games when talking about Rare. :) Some small things: Grant Kirkhope didn't do the soundtrack of Nuts & Bolts alone, but together with Robin Beanland and David Clynick. Beanland did Logbox, Jiggoseum and Terrarium of Terror. Clynick minor things. Chris Tilston said in an Eurogamer interview that Perfect Dark Zero had earned 4x its development costs. (Eurogamer: Ex-Rare devs talk Killer Instinct, Perfect Dark) It was also Rare who wanted to do Kinect and saw it as a great opportunity for the studio.(Eurogamer: Rare and the Rise and Fall of Kinect) Rare had come up with the idea of avatars themselves, interestingly at the same time as Nintendo was working on Mii's. (Kotaku: The Untold Story Of The Xbox 360 Avatars) So it wasn't Microsoft that forced this direction on Rare. Since you mentioned Playtonic: Have you looked at the other studios' games from former Rare developers, like Fashion AR from Fortune Fish (Stamper Brothers) or The Unlikley Legend of Rusty Pup from Gory Detail (Chris Seavor) - to name two of them?
@Mallerd10 ай бұрын
Thank you for enjoying the video, I really didnt know all of those things. Regarding Nuts and Bolts Kirkhope is the only thing people ever talk about when it comes to the soundtrack and every ost I downloaded for this video said: music by Grant Kirkhope so I really thought he was the only one who made that OST. Perfect Dark Zero making some money doesnt surprise me that much seeing as it was a launch title and a shooter which was pretty popular at the time but seeing that game in action I feel like the budget was on the lower side and I still wouldnt call that game a succes when its one of the worst reviewed Rare games but thats just me. Ive seen conflicting reports on who wanted to make the Kinect Sports games. A ton of people left the company after Nuts and Bolts either wanting to do other things or not agreeing with the direction the company was heading. I personally think it wasnt entirely Rare's decision because it doesnt feel like something they would do at all. And the final product really doesnt feel like a Rare game to me. I know about all the other companies ex Rare employees started but since the video was mostly about Rare in their current form I wanted to make the section on where some of the Rare employees are now quick and Playtonic seemed like the best way to do that. Thanks for all the extra info though! You truly are a huge Rare fan, you know so much about these games

I do not know why people constantly whine that Conker: Live & Reloaded is automatically bad due to the censorship for certain swear words that were uncensored in the original. I do not care for the censorship, sure it was unnecessary, but does it matter? They’re still the same funny cutscenes from the same funny N64 game which, by the way, already censored some swear words in the cutscenes in the original, so I don’t know why people throw a fit over the censorship, it doesn’t matter, it’s still the same game but with upgraded graphics and controls.
@Mallerd2 ай бұрын
It's a pretty great remake all things considered! And like you said, the original game already censored a ton of these swear words so it's not like this is anything new for this game

Ghoulies and Kameo rocks, I don't understand how people don't like a game were the premise is that you are a guy going into a haunted house and elbow dropping every monster, ghost and ghoul you find. And Kameo as well with exploration as well as creative orc torturing, Chilla being the coolest with his ability to carry alive orcs on the icesicles on his back and hold by them their head while using them as clubs or throwing spears.

I haven't played these, but when Kinect Sports came out a friend got it and we played it all day, like you said it was wii sports but an actual workout lol. You also really hit the nail on the head with Nuts & Bolts. It would have fit so much better as a Blast Corps or RC Pro Am game.

as someone who never played the banjo kazooie games growing up, i never really understood the hate for nuts and bolts. i thought the art style was a little off-putting at points but i always thought the vehicle mechanic was really unique and interesting, allowing the player to move whatever way they wanted to while allowing them to get creative with their builds. although now, looking back on it, i can definitely understand why fans were upset at the decision to bring back a beloved franchise after an almost decade hiatus, just to have it be something completely different. great video btw !

12:11 This was touched upon with one of Conker’s programmers/voice of Great Mighty Poo, Chris Marlow, in an interview w/Sola and Cola. Microsoft was trying to push the Xbox as a family console and had rules about what they couldn’t say. In terms of raw content, the remake is actually cruder and more violent in a number of instances (mainly in cutscenes). Marlow said they wished they fought harder on the censorship argument, but says it’d be a non-issue if it were made now. 43:46 According to Rare’s “Making of Rare Replay” which was once on their site (though can still be found via the web archive), they couldn’t justify putting both games on there as they weren’t different enough from each other. Ultimately, the orignal multiplayer/more lenient censorship won out. Also OG Xbox emulation wasn’t great on Xbone back then, which is why Ghoulies was made natively for Xbone instead of simply emulated.

As someone who first experienced RARE thanks to XBOX 360, this was a great trip down memory lane. Heck, stuff like JETPAC Joyride has been awesome! Though, I will say that I personally love Perfect Dark Zero. It's one of my favorites because of its odd guns, weird story, cheesy lines, and clunky mechanics. Heck, some of those gun mechanics actually do what some developers don't do and make you be a bit more sensitive with your trigger fingers. Like, did you know that you could slap your enemies' guns out of their hands? It's risky as all Hell, but its really fun to steal their gun and use it as a form of revenge. And, with how HUGE the maps are, the game is honestly better played with two players. More enemies come your way, and the objective-based missions work better as a co-operative experience. In addition, the multiplayer gameplay was lots of fun.
@Mallerd9 ай бұрын
You honestly make a really good point about the game probably being better played in co-op. That big maps make a lot more sense that way

Kameo elements of power, perfect dark, and conker are some of my favorit3 games! And sea of thieves is so fun with friends. I always disagreed with the "microsoft ruined rare" narrative you see on the internet. You must go back, if you haven't already, to Goldeneye and enjoy it. The XBLA remake is probably the best, albeit unofficial, way to play the game. I hate the controls on Switch/Xbox One, but that cancelled remake is great. I still prefer the original N64 controls, but I would never recommend that as the way for a modern gamer to play it lol
@Mallerd4 ай бұрын
I have played Goldeneye both on original hardware with the N64 controller and on NSO with that N64 NSO controller Nintendo is selling and I found both versions to still not be great. I found the levels too long and a little dull and the objectives where less streamlined then in Perfect Dark. Perfect Dark has some cool personality to it as well which is why I prefer it
@sithlordmikeyp4 ай бұрын
@@Mallerd Maybe I'm nostalgia blind. Though I didn't play through it until I was in middle school in 08 so it wasn't too old/dated then. Or maybe I was (and am) a glutton for punishment? Not sure. If I didn't know all the objectives by heart, I might be less into it. But Perfect Dark is absolutely the better game (though I've never actually given it the attention it deserves).
