The way the majority of the playerbase was collectively clueless back then, also the fact that everyone was pretty young really added to the sense of adventure every time you logged on. It's just a different game when you know exactly to expect as you efficiently grind out skills/PVM these days.

I think the main thing was the limitations of the internet back then, this was when a significant portion of the world was clueless about the internet as a whole and dial-up was the standard. Dial-up... where you would open a youtube link in 360p and wait 20-30 minutes before watching the video lmao. So imagine people trying to look up guides or better yet make them, the transfer of information was so slow, this was even pre-friend's chats so a lot of the most common ways we learn about stuff didn't exist. It wasn't long after this that people increased massively in efficiency right around when DSL started to take over as the standard for internet briefly before cable. Around 2008 people were already gravitating towards efficiency quite a lot.

People did know to kill the spinners first. What happened back then was all the high levels would move to a secret world and blitz through a PC game in about 40 seconds. They were so powerful they didn't need to kill spinners. No portal shields back then and only one boat for everyone. I remember if you were a high enough level, youd trade the guy advertising the secret world and he'd put up a number of coins referring to the world to hop to

A bot would spam the PC world every few minutes and with all the high level accounts this was the most efficient way of training your (combat) skills. I remember making a mil each 2 days just from winning PC games. They did change PC back then which resulted in a lot less xp per hour as everyone had moved to PC to gain exp. I spent a few days going to f2p worlds and hiring essence runners from fally east bank to run to and from the air altar and I'd pay them 2k per run - I ended up having a whole army of noobs who thought they were getting rich from it. Some genuinely couldn't believe that I would give them 2k for a run, haha . They ended up telling others that I was doing it as they ran through the bank and soon enough, just by word of mouth, I had a whole legion of f2p players lining up to give me ess at the altar. One night I was even up til 4am on a school night because I didn't want to lose the army of essence runners that I'd spent all night building! Why did I do this, you ask? I wanted to get 65 runecrafting to see if the rumours about the "you can now craft death runes" message were true. Before death runecrafting was even put into the game, the messages for crafting deaths at 65 and bloods at 77 were still in the game, which was nuts. When the abyss released I actually ended up getting 91 rc too in mid-2006, all my friends at school were sitting there chopping magic logs for cash while I was rcing double nats, lol

You're so right about the GE, I've said it for years. Yes, the convenience is nice but it completely changes the game. People always complain about EfficiencyScape, yet voted for the GE as their favorite update in OSRS. It completely killed the need for player interaction. Hell, I still remember the name of the player, yet I can't remember half of the people on my friend's list right now. It's funny and sad at the same time that the difference between RS2 back in the day and OSRS today is very much like the difference between childhood and adulthood itself … Many people feel so nostalgic about what the game used to be and kind of wish we could go back to that style of playing (not caring about efficiency or really understanding how everything in the game was calculated, etc.) but we just can't because we've all grown up and everything -- even this computer game -- is so high-pressure now. The game is still fun, but in a seriously different way. It would be cool if younger kinds would play and get to have the same experiences we did back in the day but I feel like most people aren't interested in this game unless they already knew about it as a kid

I think the continuance of the game was something that a lot of us missed from games thereafter. Quests, merching, items, just exploring and being a dumb noob these were all things we did and drew experiences from. Runescape was a place where we met up with friends and made new ones along the way, the game had a distinctly janky and enduring medieval feel and it was something magical as a kid. I wish i could go back and do it all over again, talk to friends i haven't in years but you can't uncook an egg and you certainly can't have the same experience twice.

Back then I was such a noob lol. I remember getting scammed for my mithril gear cause someone told me they can trim it. However later that year I managed to earn full addy (g), except for the full help. But one day I was training in the security caves next to the barbarians and someone was training as well with a full addy (g) helm, and died! So that’s how I acquired that helm lol.. good times

I'm pretty sure the hunter skill trainers and skill book suggested that camouflage helped with hunting and it wasn't until some time later people started to realize it didn't do a damn thing lol.
@MrDoughnut992 жыл бұрын
Yes this is how I remember it too. I was definitely wearing camouflage for awhile back then and I feel like I thought I had good reason to do so.

It's interesting to see how many things that were a PITA back in the day eventually got changed in OSRS as well. The GE was added, they removed those aggressive wild dogs from that one dungeon, unidentified herbs which actually went back and forth a bit.

I found out about Runescape during lunch while I was in 6th grade (2006). I had always wanted a game where the characters I saw in game were other people playing, I didn't know what an MMO was at the time. These screenshots are exactly how I remember the game back then, amazing times.

I hope everyone here is having a good Christmas Eve. This video gave me a lot of nostalgia, and reminded me a lot of how I'd be playing this game with my bedroom door wide open, listening to all of my family talk and laugh while we all waited for the turkey to finish. I still debate on playing this game again, even to this day. It's just not the same anymore like it was when I was younger. It's still nice to think about it and reminisce though. Yeah?

I discovered Runescape in the early 2007. It was an eyeopener for me. I was in love! This game has made me learn so much about other people and myself over the years. I still play today. When I started playing when I hadn't even had English in school. I had to learn myself, because I was really sucked into the game. A lot of times I wrote down words for my mom to read, so she could tell me what it said.

One of the things i miss the most about the old runescape is when someone would die their stuff would appear right away. It doesn't even matter if you die nowadays but back then dying was a big deal

Hell yea, i remember dieng with my black mask, whip and barrows gear, i was devastated.
@Outwardpd5 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is actually an issue these days I think, tons of item inflation cause items almost never leave the game. I kind of wish they would remove the 1hr to retrieve your items situation. Would make bossing a lot more interesting and make a lot of items more viable.
@theinternetexplorer76894 жыл бұрын
@@Outwardpd Good point. That probably does cause inflation. Plus, remember back in the day it was an adrenaline rush to do almost anything because you didnt want to die and lose all your stuff? If they brought back the old way it was it really would make osrs a lot more interesting and also more fun to play

ge gave us too much info too easily. it really changed the game, possibly for the worse. i remember going to F2P worlds and hiring iron workers. once the GE came my iron workers would just sell to the GE, of course for more money than i was offering them.... i miss being an iron ore pimp...
