They are in the river bay in front of this house. I saw them yesterday. You see their backs breach is it called and fish jump out of the water in front of them to try to get away. I think I would be scared if one approached me while swimming. The finless dolphin are called sunameri in Japanese. The Japanese ones live in the sea but frequent river bays. They came quite close to my kayak once. Apparently when they come the fishermen can't catch any fish, so I guess they are not so popular with fishermen. There are a couple in the local aquarium (poor things) which were caught in fishing nets. I see them every year towards the end of summer. This is Yamaguchi City, Fushino River bay.
@Rose-vu6ji7 жыл бұрын
At least they're better off than the vaquita (23 left, endemic to a part of mexico with lots of reluctant fishermen, happen to live with giant fish that apparently have "magical healing properties" in China and sell for $5,000, get caught in giant fish nets and get thrown out in sea, very low chance of survival)
@Rose-vu6ji7 жыл бұрын
Did I mention they are pretty much impossible to catch and breed in captivity despite professionals efforts and a sanctuary recently set up for them? None of them have been caught before btw and the sanctuary has never been tested out so....

Is the Yangtze River ecologically and geologically compatible with parts of the Mississippi River? If so, maybe they can move and breed these guys in the Americas, and why not? Aren't most of the US waterways infested with Chinese imported fish that are eating up local fish? I'm no expert but it should be something to consider.

If they actually are in the pool shown in the picture majority of time I think they have a lot better lives in captivity than most livestock and many other animals we keep for conventional reasons. I don't think the porpoises suffer and it aint much worse than a indoors cat living on cat food. Besides they are trying to rescue the species from extinction. I personally think it's okay unless there is something going on in their captivity that I don't know about...
