I wish I could find the Tomorrow's World episode where they first demonstrated the directional siren. Must be around 95 or so. The presenter described it as a wah-wah-woosh sound I recall.

I never heard a white noise siren with my own ears....not for the want of trying, I journeyed to Staffordshire a few times in the hope of seeing a Staffordshire ambulance with one, back in about 2000/2001. At the time though, I had read the research documents and assumed that white noise sirens would be standard a few years after that. I always wondered though, what the range was of the white noise....If you are spreading out the available energy over a much larger frequency range, you wouldn't expect it to have anything like the range of a typical siren tone? I can imagine that until the vehicle gets close to you, you won't be able to hear the white noise very well. I remember around 2000/2001, I downloaded 3 sound files I think from the soundalert website...which are the 3 different tones being used here. All of the 3 siren tones here use white noise, although you can't hear it well in the first. I've never seen this video before, it's amazing to hear these tones on a vehicle nearly 20 years later. The term "Rare" does not accurately describe the video - only a tiny, tiny fraction of the UK population has ever heard these siren tones!

I was living in Stafford in 1999-2000. Used to hear that siren all the time on ambulances. It was far too quiet, and had no real "punch" as it were. I suspect most drivers thought it was some toy ray gun.

nice vid. are those sirens like variations of burst or something.

I imagine they're all variations testing the same principle as they all consisted of the warning tone along with white noise...... followed by a classic two-tone ;)
