Anil Sharma has told this multiple times in interviews and even when Gadar was released that the film is inpired by Buta Singh's life and he wanted to make a film on him when he read his story. The Punjabi film is "based" on Buta Singh's actual story and closer the actual happening while Gadar is just inspired by it and has a very different story and ending.
