I live in Oshkosh and for the past decade I had the privilege of just seeing both flying overhead. This year it was an honor to see both in person as well as the Lancaster.

My dad was a Canadian and served as a navigator on a Lancaster out of RAF Ludford Magna, No. 101 Squadron RAF in 1944-45… He and his Canadian crew flew 30 missions (mostly at night with some during the day)… I have his log book and photos from some of those missions… seeing that Lanc taxi and takeoff is very special for me…

Was at the Oshkosh Airshow in the '90s, lugging my heavy over-the-shoulder Panasonic and loved it. Great planes, then and now. But your beautiful camera work, fast eye and composures here sure beats the crap 'outa that VHS-era work of mine . . .

Thanks for the vid! I went with some friends in the summer of 1985 (hey Ian!). Fifi was there along with a bunch of Mustangs, B-17's and a Tigercat (what happened I thought there were two still airworthy?) The highlight was Concorde. Watching it come in and then do a touch and go and two low passes was pretty awesome! It was hot and sticky and there were a zillion people there. Good times!

Great seeing two B-29s and the Lancaster together, this Lanc was several years ago in the UK and flew with the other one together. Learned about the PBJ-1J, this seems to be more of an ground attacker than a pure bomber like the standard B-25. I always like the B-25 because it is so loud, the B-17 seems like a whisper bomber compared to the B-25. Also the P-51C was cool, the B and C variants are as rare as the Spitfire Mk1 or 2, I had the honour of seeing 3 Mk1 and one Mk2 Spitfires being started up in front of me all at once, and then taking the skies with 8 another later built Spitfires at Duxford.

At some point in the mid-to-late '90s, I witnessed one or two whole rows of Basler BT-67s lined up on the FBO ramp at New Century Air Center, Gardner, KS (former Naval Air Station Olathe,KS; former Naval Air Reserve Center Olathe, KS; former Gardner, KS Industrial Airport) I had gone there after dropping my wife at Kansas City International, taking a look at my old NR stomping grounds. I was astounded to see all those Gooney Birds, seemed to be at least 2 dozen of them, refitted out with turboprop engines! VERY strange at the time.😮😊

I got to see two AC47s on the ground at an airstrip at Ben Thuy in 67 and one working out at night near Ben Tre in 67. It looked like a red wavy laser beam that originated in the inky black night sky, reaching down to the ground. Too far away for sound, though.

The only rare warbirds in this video are the Helldiver, the Lancaster, the B-29's, the OV-10D, and the C-1A. The P-51C, the B-25J's, and the C-47 are not rare warbirds.
@randemness2680
@randemness2680 2 ай бұрын
Well one of the b25s is actually made up as a PBJ, and it was the first b25 flown by a full woman crew, so yeah it is actually rare. Ill give you the c47. And the airworthy mustangs are becoming rarer and rarer. 30 years ago we would get 40-50 mustangs. Now we are lucky to get 10
@johnosbourn4312
@johnosbourn4312 2 ай бұрын
@@randemness2680 Even so, that B-25, Devil Dog, isn't a rare bird, and airworthy Mustangs keep increasing their numbers, as more airframes return to the skies. Also, the A-26 has a good sized total number of airworthy airframes, so it took isn't a rare warbirds.
@randemness2680
@randemness2680 2 ай бұрын
Did you just say the a-26 has a good amount of airworthy frames? Less than 100 is a good amount? Only 16 deemed airworthy. Ok Sorry i mean 16 flying
@randemness2680
@randemness2680 2 ай бұрын
And mustangs? Yes there are i think maybe up to 200 deemed airworthy. But almost half of them are in museums or on display and dont fly. Dont misconstrue plenty of planes with plenty of planes than can actually fly and travel and do airshows. I grew up playing on the aluminum overcast b17 as she was rrstored to airworthy touring. In 1993 she left the eagle hangar, and went ontour across the world. Sadly she returned home on trucks from ohio because she is no longer airworthy. She is still an airworthy frame. But she most likely will never fly again

I guess it's a relative term. Every crash reduces the number by one, at least for a number of years. I remember when there were a gaggle of 51s and a number of P-38s. Now there's only a few 38s. Numbers of P-40s, and the various Cats have gone down.
