- Ground storks or the ornithological sensation of 2023 -
I finally managed to finish a video with some of the most precious footage I have ever filmed. Many of you asked after a short glimpse in my last showreel ( • Wild Czechia - My Best... ): "Am I mistaken, or did those black storks nest on the ground? Can storks nest on the ground? Or did the nest fall down? And the chicks survived?" 😯
Dear friends, you did not dream it. In the Czech-Moravian highlands last year, a black stork couple did indeed nest on the ground. This is a complete rarity, the first ever documented case in the Czech Republic, quite possibly in Europe. The story of this nesting is colourful and unusual in every aspect - it has both a good and a bad ending. But let's take it in order ⬇️
At the beginning of June, the Pavlov Rescue Station receives information from a random mushroom picker who discovered a fallen nest with baby storks in the forest near Jihlava. Experienced zoologist Aleš Toman goes to check the site. He discovers that the nest is indeed lying on the ground, but not because it fell down. It was deliberately placed there. The Czech Society for Ornithology launches an action to rescue the young storks, which in these circumstances are easy prey for ground predators, especially foxes and wild boars. At this point, I was most amused by a message from Aleš: 'We wanted to build a temporary fence around them, as it is done for example with Montagu's harriers. But then we found out that the storks walk to the nest..." 🙂
In the end, ornithologists decide to use the protection of an odour repellent. Aleš goes to the site twice a week to protect the nest and, in cooperation with the local Forests of the Czech Republic staff, he also installs temporary signs that prohibit random passers-by from entering the vicinity of the nest. The storks are thus assured relative peace, the rest is up to nature. After less than two months, the efforts are really crowned with success and on 27 July I receive a message from Aleš that the young storks have successfully left the nest. Phew! 🥂
I was lucky enough to visit the storks on 28 June early in the morning. I admit that I was staring like a ploughed mouse. The black stork is perceived as a mysterious creature that usually nests in deep woods, far from people, in tall trees or on rocks. So the dubious pile of branches on the ground was truly madness. Only later did I find out from ornithologists that this stork couple had behaved strangely the previous year as well. They had nested fearlessly on a spruce tree, under which heavy machinery had been rumbling all spring, processing bark beetle wood. When the spruce died, the storks decided to remain loyal to the site and built this remarkable mound on the ground. I filmed them from a safe distance, exactly according to Aleš's instructions, but the female stork was pretty bold and walked contentedly just a few metres away from my hide while collecting nest material. A strange, really strange experience.
⏳
The storks did a really good job and successfully raised two healthy chicks in the ground nest. However, lif is not a pink fairy tale and this story has a really sad ending.
Two months had passed since the filming and I was playing with the first version of the stork video in the beginning of September. Aleš and I had agreed to have a phone call and once again thoroughly discuss all the details of the strange nesting. At that moment I had no idea that our phone call would never happen. One morning I received unexpected, horrible news - Aleš had caught a severe form of malaria on his summer trip to Africa, and despite all the efforts of the doctors, he had unfortunately lost his battle. I was left sitting like a scalded man. This must be some kind of bad joke. When I realized that Aleš was really no longer with us, I was unable to look at the footage of "our" storks for some time. That's why their video is only now seeing the light of day. Naturally, I dedicate it to Aleš, without whom not only would these shots not have been taken, but probably the nesting itself would not have turned out the way it did.
Thank you, Aleš 🖤
