Today's tip: Artillery Shells / Cannon balls from the Civil War will cast larger signals than they actually are. This is due to the iron halo. The really deep ones can be very faint and will occasionally have a mid or high tone. Pay attention to more than just the numbers on your detector 🔺🔺Want to know more about our gear? Click 👉 www.amazon.com/shop/historyseekers or if you have questions about getting detecting gear call Heath 256-284-2247. We are releasing a new detecting video next and a BIG detecting video next week.

Does that shell need to be de-armed? Sure looks like it does. Hate to see that thing explode.
@kellyhistoryseekers3090
@kellyhistoryseekers3090 4 жыл бұрын
No, it's a solid bolt so it is not explosive. It was used to take out other artillery guns like a giant bullet. We talked with Steve Phillips last week, who over his lifetime has dug many Civil War era projectiles. He estimated this Sawyer could have gone several miles into enemy lines. A very interesting piece of history!
@HistorySeekers
@HistorySeekers 4 жыл бұрын
No, it is a solid piece of iron with a lead sabot around it. Nothing inside to explode. The ones that are explosive are also usually really safe so long as you dont let the powder dry out. They become dangerous when you start drilling or have them sitting over a fireplace. The live ones need to be rendered safe by someone that knows how. My friend Steve Phillips does ours that need to be disarmed.

I get chills watching you guys dig up unexploded shells. You don't know until you look at it if it was a solid projectile or explosive. I don't think the danger is as high now as it was 50 or 75 years ago, but it still has a pucker factor!

Awesome Find! Used to live in New Orleans and visited the Port Hudson Battlefield twice. It’s great that you had access to private property. Not much opportunity to detect Port Hudson today. Now living in Michigan. I would like to be able to detect a Civil War site with my boys. We don’t have that opportunity in Michigan. I just got an equinox 800 to add to my Garrett Grand Master Hunter and White’s DFX. I don’t have a lot of hours on the equinox yet, but I really like its performance so far. @miwolve1278
@miwolve1278 4 жыл бұрын
Kelly - History Seekers Yes we visited the museum and walked the battlefield and into the confederate trenches and redoubts. I asked the person working the museum about Metal detecting, but I decided not to ask any strangers for permissions because he told me the locals are not fond of metal detectors. Apparently this is because in the 1960’s and early 1970’s before the battlefield became a federal park people came from almost every state in the Union and raided the artifacts. He said they gave one man permission and he was supposed to donate his finds to the museum and he left with over 40 plates and buckles and never donated. They told me one person took buttons right off of the coat of a soldier when they found his remains and just looted the artifacts. That was disrespectful so I could see how those kind of people make those of us that follow the rules look bad too. We go to New Orleans once or twice a year to visit my wife’s family. Does your group go to Louisiana frequently? Do you know of any permissions that are available even to purchase? I used to go to an old plantation in South Louisiana it was on about 750 acres. I don’t have access anymore because the owner that I knew passed away. He was a nice man and let myself and my sons detect there.

Very cool Jeff. What kind was it? I prob should have put union in the title but said it in the video. If you have a video, I would like to see that one. The last confederate shell that I dug was a 12 lbs confederate ball with nice brass fuse adapter near Dallas GA. We think it’s a polygonal

Awesome Video! Those were great finds. I’m glad to see those relics come out of the ground. Each bullet each shell and every dropped item is a part of history from that time. To leave it there would be like forgetting the hell those soldiers on both sides went through in battle. Again, great job. Oh and Kevin Bob is a nice guy too. He hooked me up with a shell frag while hunting with him. He found it and gave it to me. I don’t think he likes iron too much.
@kellyhistoryseekers3090
@kellyhistoryseekers3090 4 жыл бұрын
The Siege of Port Hudson was a battle that could have easily changed the Civil War. The 7500 Confederate men fortified that land and fought against a Union Army four times the size. Their strategy and fortitude was brilliant but heir inability to get supplies and illness lost them control of the Mississippi and broke communication between the Southern states. These trips always give us the opportunity to learn more about the past and share what we find with others. Many times it's just bullets but sometimes the things we find are so rare, we can tell the stories of the men or companies that fired them.
