My family fled Russia in one of those pogroms, a little before the down fall of the last czar. The whole family was executed by the Cossacks but the children were spared and were able to flee to the United States. One of them, the only sister of my grandmother, ended up in France. She never heard from her again. One of my nieces is in the process of starting a biography, since my family want to leave something of History for posterity for the new generation from a past not so remote.

Why is that list from the 1840's written in German, btw? Wasn't Latvia part of the Russian Empire then? (Edit: Including the name Benson which is spelled "Bensohn", i.e. "Son of Ben" in German).

In Latvia, the historic dominant cultural and political presence were the Germans, from the Middle ages on, the Baltic Germans as they were called. Thus even the Official administrative language of record keeping of births, deaths, marriages, etc., etc...continued to be in German even under the initial presence of the takeover by the Russian Empire. The official language was finaly superimposed in Latvia by Russian in 1891.

The celts once dominated Austria and then the Romans. I learned that last summer in Austria. Before you can build or improve any land, archeology must be performed for relics. If you go far back enough, there were empires that ruled way before the common ones we know of
