There is no national language in India. 22 Official languages are prescribed in the constitution. That includes Hindi, Urdu, Samaskrutam (Sanskrit) and the other major regional languages. English is the international language. Because of the overwhelming use of Hindi and English, there was an amendment done in the constitution where in Section 343 states that Hindi and English will be called the working languages. So in addition to any state's official language, for easy communication one should know either Hindi or English (Both would be ideal but not compulsory that you should know both the languages). So mostly in the North of India along with any state's official language Hindi is used and in the South and North East of India, along with any state's official language English is used.
