“Higher Ground” is an interpretation of The Viking Age with references to an old Viking legend where some Vikings chose not to fight with weapons but chose peace instead. The message is strong and forever applicable; an invitation to seek peaceful solutions to conflicts and is inspired by the legend of Viking Magnus Erlendsson.

@Doniedaff6 жыл бұрын
True, there were some signs in recent years that things were getting better, but this year was just appalling. The really sad thing for me is that it was the jury vote that held Denmark back, the people who supposedly know what they are talking about. Denmark did very well in the public vote. I was disappointed with how our entry did too. For me Ryan was comfortably in the top 5, certainly top 10 at bare minimum. The Notherlands and Norway deserved a lot better than they got too.
@ciaranwithers61266 жыл бұрын
Doniedaff Definitely and Ryan was great although I wouldn't expect him to win as it is quite slow. I thought Cann Linn should have did better too a few years ago because she had a good decent song, good performance and it represented Celtic culture.

"Higher Ground" was inspired by, and loosely based on, the story of a 12th century viking warrior called Magnus Erlendsson (earl of Orkney), as told in the "Orkneyinga" and two other Norse Sagas. According to these sources, Magnus converted (at some point) to Christianity, and became known as a benevolent leader, who preferred to solve conflicts by peaceful/non-violent means. Many of his rivals and former friends ridiculed him for his (supposed) "weakness" (the song's lyrics specifically refer to this). Magnus was eventually executed by his cousin (and co-ruler of Orkney), Haakon Paulsson. He was later declared a Christian saint/martyr. The famous "St. Magnus Cathedral", located at Kirkwall (Orkney Islands, present-day Scotland) is named after him. The song is great (one of my favorites this year). I hope it'd inspire people to learn a bit more about Nordic history, culture and mythology. It's a fascinating subject :-)

Thank you for your elaboration on this great song and history of the peaceful viking warrior who respected non-barbarian way of handling things! "Freeze the arrow in the air" is all time message that question one´s believe system and mismatched values of peace. Earl´s conversion to Christianity and his proclamation to a martyr-saint speaks about his peaceful character, loyalty to God´s Commands to cherish life even at the costs of his own. The song is great, has appealing character and the performance is stunning. Therefore, even if competing with different, other great entries in ESC final is going to be hard or a desirable outcome such is winning the contest fails, Rasmussen and Danish "crew" will for sure present their epic masterpiece in a best way possible and hopefully have a great time being a significant part of this show. God bless!

DANK Thames honestly it sounds like something that would come out of Hollywood. It's not an authentic piece of viking music. It's generic and has no national identity. It was actually originally supposed to be part of melodifestevalen for Sweden but got rejected and honestly I can see why. Sweden knows what it does best and it's not trying to send something that's supposed to sound traditional to eurovision.

Ships in the making Bound for a distant shore World for the taking Men gone forever more Boarding and setting sail Yet victory won’t prevail (Oh oh oh) Freeze the arrow in the air Make your mark and leave it hanging there (Oh oh oh) Be the first to turn around Take the leap to land on higher ground (Take to land on higher ground) (Taka stökk til hærri jörð, taka) (Taka stökk til hærri jörð, taka) Call in, surrender Still it won’t feel like defeat Men laying down their swords Each of their own accord (Oh oh oh) Freeze the arrow in the air Make your mark and leave it hanging there (Oh oh oh) Be the first to turn around Take the leap to land on higher ground (Take to land on higher ground) Raise the banner to the sky Face the fear and hold your head up high Oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh oh Take the leap like you were bound for higher ground (Taka stökk til hærri jörð, taka) (Taka stökk til hærri jörð, taka) Freeze the arrow in the air Make your mark and leave it hanging there Freeze the arrow in the air Make your mark and leave it hanging there (Oh oh oh) Be the first to turn around Take the leap to land on higher ground, yeah Be the first to turn around Take the leap and land on higher ground (Take to land on higher ground)

Mercy FREEZE THE ARROW IN THE AIR, MAKE YOUR MARK AND LEAVE IT HANGING THEREE OOOOOOOOOO😂😂😂
@gunnerthedenmark6 жыл бұрын
the French song, mercy were also good in my book, and the song is about a Christian viking that existed way back of course, he denounced violence and stayed at the ships while the other viking attacked and plundered the britts as far as i know, he hoped others would follow him, so this song is about us as danes we keep our frontier spirits and be the first to break ground in many areas, but denounce violence and be the peace full people we have become over the years.
@mercy51196 жыл бұрын
gunnerthedenmark Yes I think that Mercy was a good song too (and I don't say that because of my name haha) but I think this one wasn't able to won these year, the others song were absolutely awesome! And thank you for the explanation!

Pia Hansen, exactly.. If Ms Chicken wins, i will stop watching Eurovision forever.. That song is an absolute disgrace to this majestic contest.. What is worrying is that there are so many people who actually like her song...
@ruthysadeh26896 жыл бұрын
Don't you think it's all about taste in music?? the problem with this song is it has just one house in the beginning and the rest the lyrics repeat them selves, the chicken song is funny, catchy and has a very strong message to the bully boys, am I clear enough? :)
@adrianmocanu60686 жыл бұрын
Ruthy Sadeh, sorry but that song is not Eurovision material.. Eurovision songs should be majestic, like the show itself.. To me that song is just ridiculous.. Maybe as a temporary radio song, but that's it.. Hope that's clear as well..

Yeeeah I'm moving to Denmark. Why is it that all Scandinavians just seem to be absolutely gorgeous? Is it the cold? Is it the dark? Is it that I'm insanely attracted to vikings? ... All of the above?
@karant05833 жыл бұрын
Sry for late answer, but it's beautiful in the nature at least in Norway, and yeah it's pretty cold in the autumn and winter, it's dark in the winter. Almost nobody looks like vikings. The place matching your description best is northern Norway on the summer, it's beautiful, ok temperature and the sun is shining even in the midnight.

I still have no idea what juries of all the 43 countries were thinking. Israels song is entertaining and a bit weird, but Denmarks performance is truly amazing. I love the vocals and the vibe of the whole thing. I am furious that juries liked Sweden performer. (Sorry Sweden, but I really disliked the guy. Typical pop song with a pretty face.) But I also liked Cyprus. Gave me Beyonce and Shakira feeling tbh. (Nothing bad, but really? Why Israel? I mean I get it, but......why?)

I agree with you, this song expresses our culture and out true values, but unfortunately the people in Europe don't know them, because you seem to have forgotten the Viking Age and all the nations that the vikings founded: Normandy, Russia, The Kingdom of Sicily, Iceland etc...
