Rasoolan Bai - Rare Doordarshan Interview

Rasoolan Bai was an eminent and influential Hindustani classical music vocal musician. Belonging to the Benaras gharana, she specialized in the romantic Purab Ang of the Thumri musical genre and tappa. This rare interview recording was provided by my friend and classical music connoisseur & collector Gagan Afzal.

I am a Pathan, I'm listening this from the extreme northern Part of Pakistan and listening to this makes me so sad...We not only lost a united Hindustan but we lost wisdom, purity, talent and got divided people divided country and we are in the deepest shit of historical times..

Thank you so much Zunaidbhai for this great experience. I felt as if I was talking to this legendary artist. She had passed away much before my birth but whenever I listen to her recordings I feel solace. It is really sad that such a great artist died in terrible poverty. The society could not give respect this great lady who served the Indian classical music with her precious gems.

This was a lady who seems quite taciturn and unused to being interviewed in front of an audience. Look at her body language and eyes straying all over the place. In fact, I seem to think that she was slightly annoyed by this attention displayed towards her art. It also seemed difficult to get her to to open up. The interviewer was perhaps anxious to avoid awkward moments of silence, and also tried to stimulate his subject so that she might participate a little more kindly. I don't think you should be annoyed with the interviewer who was faced with a formidable subject in front of him
