Hi Scott!!I'd like to refresh a topic regarding Orange Pi vs. Banana Pi especially that comunity is growing. Currently there are a newer versions of each boards. Orange Pi seems to improved software (according to buyers opinions). I'd like to know is it worth it to get either of this minicomputer (as alternative to Raspberry Pi 3 which I already have)? Purpose is installing OctoPrint on it, record video during 3d printing procces using some nice -not dedicated usb cam like ELP, store that video files on attached 2,5'' HDD and maybe play around from time to time. Best would be to get high resolution (let's say 4k, or at least HD in the worst case scenario). But as always there some cons. Some people are convinced it cannot be done, while others believe it should work :) What is the right answer? :) There isn't any instruction how to install Octoprint on BPi (while for RPi there is planty, and just a few for OPi). I'm searching solutions but in case of Orange or Banana it's not so obviouse. What about different boards (like Asus Tinker boards, Odroid or Rock)? Could you maybe do test comparison about running octoprint on that devices, please? Another question: is it possible to install Octoprint on system like Android or even Rasbian for not Raspberry devices? What is your opinion about Orange Pi and Banana? I have read what you wrote 2 years ago, but after a such amount of time your possition could be changed. Wasn't it? :)

I'm wanting to mount one of these fruity boxes on the back of a TV to play videos in our church. Which of these devices would you recommend for that?
@SimisFul9 жыл бұрын
+cee128d I would recommend you buy the Raspberry Pi Zero and Install OpenELEC on it, it is an OS dedicated to being a media center and dang good at it. My Raspberry Pi can run smooth videos up to 1080p and stream 720p videos. Would be perfect for your needs
@cee128d9 жыл бұрын

Waiting for the delivery of my Orange Pi 2. I already have 3 original RPIs and was looking for the extra performance to run Octoprint. Hoping it runs okay...
@PeterScargill8 жыл бұрын
Interesting - I've tested all of these - and the single thing that has stood out up to now - is that the ONLY unit that is properly supported with just about everything working - is the Raspberry Pi 2 and of course now the much faster Raspberry Pi 3 - which - as it is the same price as the old model 2 should be the one to compare with. Orange Pi support is non-existent - the images on the company website don't even work for the most part, I'm checking BPI-M2 now - the "Raspbian" image - the first thing I tried was the SD Copy program, one of the better features of RPI. Doesn't work. RPI does not have Android YET but at least the image people are working on is Android 6 - most of the other offerings provide pretty ancient Android like 4.2.

Will the monitor/display port on the Banana work with any type of screen with the same socket, or are you stuck with a Banana brand screen/other screen with external driver? I have lots of junk electronics like a couple of perfectly working screens, would be fun to make a tablet or some other portable device. Also, can you use a rc car single cell lipo pack for power? Those packs usually have a lot more mAh than those UltraFire or similar type of batteries.

Why did you compare only the Fruit Pis and not boards like the ODROID-C1+ which falls in the same price range? I get you need to make a selection and can't cover all the boards out there. But the ones you choose are all named after a piece of fruit, was that a conscious decision?

You should check out the Odroid series. The Odroid C1 is faster and cheaper than the BPi-M2. If you need even more power then there's the Odroid XU4 that has 2GB RAM, faster CPU and USB 3.0 (great for fileserver with usb HDDs) roughly double the price of the Odroid C1 though. I run arch linux on my C1 which also includes a port of the wiringPI library. You can get these boards from pollin in Germany.
