Another issue is that the Pi 4 runs fairly hot compared with previous models. There is an update to help with this, but I ended up getting an open-air case with a fan just to be on the safe side, as the stock closed case just wasn't enough.
@OttosTheName5 жыл бұрын
It's also a bit larger then the Pi 1, 2 and 3. But they fail to mention that everywhere. So even if you make some new cutouts in the cases you have it's not guaranteed to fit (it will fit in the previous original case with some modding, won't look very nice but keeps most dust out of it.) It does still have the same hole pattern, I managed to find out eventually. And yeah the 4 gets hot. Usually not a big problem, it ramps up the clock speed for a boost of speed and then it goes to idle most of the time. But when playing video or playing more demanding games you'll want an open case with at least a heatsink I think.

I took an old Verizon DSL router, gutted it, glued in some plastic gubbins to hold the Pi steady and it's perfect. There's JUST enough room inside for the board, a 270 degree HDMI adapter, plus a tiny 3.5mm extension cable. With that, all the wires run out the back of the router. If you didn't look close enough, you would just think I was daft enough to still be using DSL in this day & age.

Stuart, I'm putting this here because it might be of help to some. If you get a RetroFlag case, there is a chance that you may run into an issue where your Pi won't boot when installed into it. If you're using a USB power supply with an in-line switch, this will conflict with the Pi's own power switch and nothing will happen even if your power supply is turned on. For these cases, use a straight-through power supply and you should be good. Also, on the MegaPi case, after a handful of times opening and closing the SD cover, it does get easier to open.

They're very common in the "maker" sort of sphere because they are a full Linux computer (you can run some other OSs, but not "normal Windows" as the CPU is very different to your intel-amd x86-64 sort of thing). The Pi Zero might be found for $5 if you're lucky, the Pi 4 might run you ~$40 or so. That's for the board-only, you will at least need to add a microSD card (no built-in storage) and then possibly network cable, usb keyboard/mouse, HDMI cable for tv/monitor hookup - all entirely depending on what you want to do with it. I have a Pi3 B+ in a mini arcade cabinet (the PiCade kit), another one acting as a 3d-printer-server so my 3d printer can be operated over the network, more doing other handy stuff all over the place. The original ones had a 700MHz CPU and either 256 or 512mb of RAM (I forget) - the Pi 4 is quad-core 1GHz and with 1/2/4gb RAM varieties. A Pi4 should make an excellent RetroPi emulation machine for 16-bit-era consoles and older MAME stuff.
