ABSTRACT
Rob Bishop, a developer for the Raspberry Pi Foundation, will be at Google to give a talk on the educational mission and history behind the Raspberry Pi Foundation as well as giving an opportunity to do a technical Q&A in person. He'll cover the motivation behind the creation of the Raspberry Pi and how they want you to get involved in bringing better computing education to the classroom.

Cheers for starting the Raspberry Pi foundation. I purchased one recently, started tinkering, and immediately gained confidence in my technical abilities. Today I purchased and installed RAM and internal hard drive upgrades, saving $60 in Geek Squad fees. I'll attribute those savings and the tech know-how I gained in the process to the Raspberry Pi foundation. It's this kind of inspiration by degrees of separation that will define RPi's success. So, I guess what I'm saying is, thanks!!

honestly, all I needed for my pi was a power supply. I just used an old SD card I had lying around and connect to it through ssh (no keyboard/mouse/screen required). It works fairly well and it's an amazing educational tool for such a low price. Why would you even get mad about it I have no idea...

That's one point of view, the other is that most lower education schools don't have large budgets, they generally have limited resources, and can't afford giving kids access to more than a heavily censored internet and a very limited number of applications. With the pi, the kids can do whatever they want, and if something goes horribly wrong the sd card can just be reformatted with no harm done.

I have referred this to a co-workers teenage son. It's invaluable for what it provides, (I have one,) and so I can speak from experience. I personally haven't done much with it, though it has great potential. I have seen companies like Lockitron use similar technology for their product. Kids can have a direct path to a startup with this kind of learning tool IMHO.

I wish my middle and high school had things like that when I was there. I fell into the same trap twice by taking a computer class and ending up doing word processing.

I am sorry that after reading the post, so many of you do not get the concept. The whole concept to this is that the software (and hardware) companies need programmers. The thing is that if I bought my 7 to 15 year old a computer to program and found it in pieces or not being able to use it the day after I bought it for them, I would be disappointed. The Pi was built to teach programming that gives satisfaction. Keyboards, mice, sd cards and Power sup. can easily be gotten very cheaply.

Google should get involved with MIT Labs and launch an annual Scratch competition, starting at Local level building thru State up to National championship. The format can be as simple as youngsters arriving at the competition hall and being given a time-limited problem to solve using Scratch. Google would be the ideal company to champion this cause. For the older kids, follow suite with Python.

try other OSes. buy some cheap 8Gig SD cards and load them with different OSes try to explore that is the point. The OSes can be downloaded from the Raspberry Pi website. Also there is a magazine named: The MagPi search for it and download all the issues as pdf files. Then on every weekend try to read an issue and apply the learned knowledge. Good luck

It's true that if you just import the pygame module, you won't need X. Only if you use any of its graphics stuff will you need X. But honestly; who uses PyGame just for its input and audio handling?

I am not ignorant of the concept of dialect, I simply dispute that this is the case in this instance. If it were a dialect, it would be consistent to some demographic, but this cuts across regional, national, class, economic groupings etc.

I didn't say that. Maybe it's the voices in your head. The point is that with a development board like the Pi alone you can do nothing. You need a lot of additional stuff to make it useful. A netbook comes will all you need to actually use it. Once you you buy all the stuff that the Pi is missing, you end up spending the same amount of money.

I was very lucky with my pi, Power supply plug was from a old Sony phone, power USB Cable from a Broken Kindle E-Reader, SD Card was the Micro 8gb card from the old Sony phone in a SD caddy. A Powered USB2 HUB, i have had for a few years, along with an old USB Track ball. USB Keyboard came via a friend who just up graded to a wirelsess keyboard, HDMI cable was from a long dead PS3 (The old version) Sorted, "0" pounds spent on the extras. Very happy bunny that it all worked with no problems.

No I just read a bit too fast. You dont think that's a more logical explanation? No need to be rude. Can you define additional stuff? A SD card is a couple of bucks, you need far more additional stuff with a microcontroller. I see many uses without buying any additional stuff.

if the IDEAL is really about the next generation of programming-able people, they should connect with other opensource initiatives like arduino and "Light Table" a new programming ide...also the multicore parrallella at kickstart will quickly supercede this hardware, so the imaginary (software) value about this concept is more important than the "real" value, the hardware. without the integration of opensource ideals, im afraid this board will become obsolete quite soon !

After you get your "something minimal" and add the bare minimum to make it useable, you end up paying as much as you would have for a netbook. How that qualifies as "plenty of bang for the buck" in you mind I don't understand.

Why is that relevant? Microcontrollers do obviously not come with a keyboard, mouse and screen either. That's the point, to have something minimal to just add what you really need. For that use i think Raspberry Pi gives you plenty of bang for the buck.

It's a cool toy but once you add the cost of a keyboard, mouse, screen and headphones, power supply, SD card... you end up paying something in the range of a low end netbook. If you need something to build a robot you're much better off investing in some microcontroller board, which is the stuff that's actually used in the real world.

He may be very intelligent and knowledgeable about computing, but he is ignorant about how to pronounce the letter 'H'. I find it not entertaining but very annoying. What is probably more annoying to me is the number of times he says, "kind of".
